New Mazda Patent Shows the Rotary Engine Isn’t Dead as Automakers Race Toward EVs

Mazda’s rotary engine has spent much of the past decade looking like an engineering curiosity from another era, but a newly published U.S. patent application suggests the company is still investing serious effort in making the unconventional engine work under modern emissions constraints. The filing describes a sophisticated exhaust-gas-recirculation system for a rotary engine, including a two-rotor configuration and turbocharging in one detailed embodiment. It arrives while electric vehicles are taking an increasingly large share of global auto sales and Mazda itself is preparing a broader battery-electric lineup. Rather than choosing between combustion and electrification, however, Mazda appears determined to keep the rotary engine available as another tool—whether for generating electricity, powering an electrified sports car, or supporting technology that has been closely associated with the brand for nearly six decades.

The Patent Tackles a Very Modern Rotary Problem

The U.S. patent application, published on August 13, 2026, concerns an exhaust gas recirculation, or EGR, system designed specifically for a rotary engine. Its stated objective is relatively straightforward: lower the temperature of recirculated exhaust gas without requiring an oversized EGR cooler. That matters because modern combustion engines face increasingly difficult demands for both power and emissions performance. Mazda’s proposed arrangement sends cooler exhaust from a peripheral exhaust port toward the EGR system while hotter exhaust from separate side ports can be directed toward the turbocharger. The document describes using the engine housing itself as part of the cooling solution, allowing exhaust gas to shed heat before reaching the conventional EGR cooler.

The engineering details make the filing more interesting than a generic patent intended simply to preserve intellectual property. In its illustrated configuration, the engine has two rotors operating at different rotational phases, a turbocharger, an intercooler, direct fuel injection, catalytic converters and an EGR cooler. The patent says the engine system can provide driving force for a vehicle or driving force for electricity generation. That language leaves several possible applications open. It does not prove Mazda has approved a new rotary sports car, but it shows engineers are considering a fairly sophisticated rotary powerplant rather than merely maintaining the existing single-rotor generator used in the MX-30.

Mazda Is Trying to Solve Heat and Emissions, Not Relive the Past

Rotary engines have always offered an appealing combination of compact dimensions, low weight and smooth power delivery, but efficiency and emissions have historically been much harder problems. The new patent addresses one of those weaknesses directly. It explains that during high-load operation, managing exhaust temperature can require a richer fuel mixture to protect the catalytic converter. Burning extra fuel can lower exhaust temperatures, but it can also undermine emissions performance because three-way catalysts operate most effectively around a stoichiometric air-fuel mixture. Mazda’s proposed solution is to circulate a larger quantity of cooled exhaust gas while keeping the hardware compact enough to fit around the rotary engine.

There is already evidence that this approach can produce meaningful gains. Mazda’s technical work on the newer 8C rotary engine used in the MX-30 Rotary-EV included direct injection, a higher compression ratio, redesigned combustion geometry and cooled EGR. Mazda engineers reported that the generator-focused 8C improved unit fuel consumption by as much as 25 percent compared with the older 13B used as the reference point, while achieving stoichiometric operation throughout its operating range and meeting Euro 6d emissions requirements. The newly published patent goes further into packaging and heat management, suggesting Mazda is still looking for ways to squeeze additional capability from the basic architecture rather than treating the current 8C as the end point.

The Rotary Already Came Back as a Generator

For drivers who associate Mazda rotaries exclusively with RX-badged sports cars, the technology’s return actually happened several years ago. Production of the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV began in Hiroshima in June 2023, marking Mazda’s first mass-produced rotary-powered vehicle since RX-8 production ended in 2012. Instead of sending engine torque directly to the wheels, however, its newly developed 8C rotary acts as a generator. The vehicle uses a series plug-in-hybrid layout, meaning propulsion is handled by its electric motor. In the European specification announced by Mazda, the system combined a 17.8-kWh battery with a 50-litre fuel tank and offered an official 85-kilometre WLTP electric-only range.

The generator itself demonstrated why Mazda continues to find the rotary architecture useful. The 8C is a naturally compact single-rotor engine displacing 830 cc. Mazda packaged the engine, generator and electric motor into the MX-30’s existing engine compartment while retaining battery-electric-style motor propulsion. Technical information published by Mazda lists the propulsion motor at 125 kW and 260 Nm, while the 8C generator engine develops 55 kW at 4,500 rpm in the Japanese technical specification. In this role, the rotary’s small physical footprint becomes more important than the high-revving personality remembered from the RX-7 and RX-8. It can generate electricity at selected operating points rather than constantly following road speed and accelerator position.

Mazda Rebuilt Its Rotary Development Team

The latest patent also fits a larger corporate decision that Mazda made before the filing appeared. On February 1, 2024, the company formally reinstated its dedicated Rotary Engine Development Group after an absence of almost six years. Mazda said the team would continue developing rotary engines used for electricity generation while also investigating regulatory compliance in major markets and the application of carbon-neutral fuels. That wording was significant because it positioned the rotary as part of Mazda’s future powertrain research rather than simply an engineering tribute to its past.

The timing was equally revealing. Mazda had unveiled the Iconic SP concept only months earlier and received substantial attention for combining an electrified sports-car layout with a two-rotor generating system. When announcing the revived development group, Mazda executives described the rotary as a symbol of the company’s willingness to tackle difficult engineering problems. Research was not limited to one production model or one fuel. Mazda has repeatedly discussed the rotary engine’s ability to work with different fuels and its usefulness as a compact generator. A dedicated engineering organization, an existing production rotary and additional patent activity together create a stronger case for continued development than any single concept vehicle could provide on its own.

The Iconic SP Explains Why Enthusiasts Are Watching

One reason a technical EGR patent attracts so much attention is the Mazda Iconic SP. Revealed at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, the compact sports-car concept uses what Mazda calls a two-rotor Rotary-EV system. The rotary is intended to generate electricity rather than mechanically drive the wheels, allowing the electric drive system to provide propulsion while the small combustion engine extends the vehicle’s flexibility. Mazda quoted maximum system output at 370 PS, vehicle weight at 1,450 kilograms and weight distribution of approximately 50:50. The concept measures 4,180 millimetres long and only 1,150 millimetres high, proportions partly enabled by the compact rotary power unit.

Those specifications created obvious comparisons with Mazda’s classic rotary sports cars, even though the underlying drivetrain philosophy is very different. The company said the Iconic SP’s rotary system was designed with the ability to use fuels including hydrogen and carbon-neutral alternatives. Its compact dimensions also permitted engineers to position components in ways intended to lower the centre of gravity. None of that means the newly published patent belongs to a production Iconic SP, and Mazda has not made that connection. Still, a patent describing a turbocharged, two-rotor engine capable of either propelling a vehicle or generating electricity naturally attracts interest when Mazda has already presented a two-rotor electrified sports-car vision.

The Rotary’s History Gives Mazda a Reason to Keep Investing

Mazda has more invested in the rotary engine than engineering resources alone. Its first production rotary-powered model, the Cosmo Sport, arrived in 1967 after years of development work that included solving severe durability problems with the rotor-housing surface and apex seals. Mazda eventually became the manufacturer most closely identified with the Wankel design. In October 2023, the company announced that cumulative production of rotary-engine vehicles had surpassed two million units. That total spans everything from early Cosmo and RX models to the unusual Rotary Pickup sold in North America and the modern MX-30 Rotary-EV.

Motorsport added another layer to the reputation. Mazda’s four-rotor 787B won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991, while generations of RX-7s and the later RX-8 turned the engine’s smooth, high-revving character into an important part of Mazda’s identity. Yet the history is not entirely romantic. Mazda itself acknowledges that fuel consumption became a serious weakness, particularly after the 1970s oil crisis. That makes the current engineering direction notable: instead of simply recreating an old RX powertrain, Mazda is trying to address the characteristics that historically limited the engine while preserving its advantages in packaging and power density.

EV Growth Makes the Rotary a Hedge, Not a Rejection of Electrification

The rotary work is taking place while the global auto market moves deeper into electrification. The International Energy Agency reported that electric-car sales exceeded 20 million worldwide in 2025, representing roughly one quarter of all new cars sold. For 2026, the agency expects around 23 million electric cars to be sold, equivalent to approximately 28 percent of the global market. The direction is therefore clear even though growth rates vary dramatically by region. Europe, China and other Asia-Pacific markets are moving at different speeds, while policy changes have made demand less predictable in some countries.

Mazda is planning for that uncertainty rather than betting exclusively on one powertrain. Its management strategy projects battery-electric vehicles could account for roughly 25 to 40 percent of Mazda’s global sales by 2030. The company is simultaneously developing BEVs, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, improved combustion engines and alternative-fuel technologies under what it calls a multi-solution strategy. In that context, continued rotary development is less contradictory than it first appears. Mazda is not using the engine as an argument against EVs. Instead, the company sees a compact combustion generator as one possible way of supporting electric propulsion where charging infrastructure, driving patterns or customer expectations make a battery-only vehicle less practical.

What the Patent Really Tells Us About Mazda’s Next Move

Patents need to be interpreted cautiously. Automakers routinely protect engineering concepts that never reach dealerships, and patent drawings should not automatically be treated as previews of future production vehicles. Mazda’s August 2026 filing does not name an RX-9, a production Iconic SP or any other future model. It also does not provide a launch date. What it does establish is that considerable thought is still being given to rotary combustion, turbocharging, emissions control, cooling and extremely tight packaging. The detailed two-rotor embodiment is especially notable because Mazda’s current production 8C generator uses a single rotor.

Taken together with Mazda’s existing Rotary-EV, its revived development group and the two-rotor Iconic SP concept, the patent makes one conclusion reasonably safe: Mazda has not relegated the rotary engine to a museum display. Its future may look very different from the days when an RX-7’s rotary directly drove the rear wheels. It could increasingly serve as a generator within electrified vehicles, operate on lower-carbon fuels or support specialized performance applications where compact dimensions are especially valuable. As the industry adds millions of EVs each year, Mazda appears to be keeping one of its most unconventional technologies alive by giving it an electrified purpose rather than asking it to compete with electrification.
