General Motors is preparing one of its most important pickup launches in years, and the earliest 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 production is expected to lean toward high-content trucks powered by GM’s new V8 engines. Industry reporting indicates the initial mix will favour the new sixth-generation 5.7-litre and 6.6-litre V8s, effectively putting some of the company’s more expensive configurations near the front of the production queue.

The strategy comes as both trucks undergo sweeping redesigns. Chevrolet has confirmed seven Silverado trims, while GMC has announced six Sierra trims, with the High Country and Denali Ultimate serving as luxury flagships and the ZR2 and AT4X anchoring the premium off-road end of their respective lineups. The first trucks are expected at dealerships before the end of 2026.

The Launch Is Expected to Start Near the Top

The key distinction is that GM has publicly confirmed the redesigned trucks and their late-2026 arrival, but it has not publicly issued a detailed trim-by-trim production calendar. The sequencing comes from industry reporting based on sources familiar with GM’s launch plans. GM Authority reported that the first 2027 Silverado and Sierra units are expected to emphasize the company’s new sixth-generation Small Block V8 engines. MarkLines subsequently summarized the plan as GM launching the trucks in higher-end trims first, with the early production mix weighted toward V8-equipped configurations.

That approach would make sense for an entirely redesigned pickup family. Launching heavily equipped trucks allows GM to showcase the hardware and technology that most clearly separate the 2027 models from outgoing trucks. Chevrolet is describing the High Country as its most premium Silverado, while GMC calls Denali Ultimate its flagship. At the same time, the report should not be interpreted as meaning every early truck will be a single luxury trim. GM has several expensive off-road configurations, and exact production allocations can change as a launch approaches.

“Most Expensive” Is More Complicated Than It Sounds

High Country and Denali Ultimate are the obvious luxury flagships, but pickup pricing no longer follows a simple ladder in which the most luxurious badge always carries the highest sticker price. Chevrolet’s current 2026 Silverado illustrates the point. The High Country starts at $62,900 in the United States, while the specialized ZR2 starts considerably higher at $71,800. Options, engines, cab configurations and off-road packages can push transaction prices much higher still. GMC has a similar split between Denali luxury models and costly AT4X off-road trucks.

That makes the production strategy better understood as a premium-content and V8-first launch rather than a strict exercise in producing the single highest-MSRP model before everything else. The redesigned Sierra is officially being introduced with Denali Ultimate and AT4X as its headline models, while Chevrolet has given substantial attention to both High Country and ZR2. These trucks contain much of the hardware GM wants buyers to notice—new engines, larger displays, upgraded interiors, advanced driver assistance and sophisticated suspension equipment. They also provide a more dramatic first impression than a basic fleet truck parked on a dealer’s front row.

GM’s New V8s Are Central to the Rollout

The most significant mechanical story is underneath the hood. Both pickups will offer all-new sixth-generation Small Block V8 engines displacing 5.7 and 6.6 litres. Chevrolet says the engines improve power and torque compared with the outgoing generation, while GMC says engineers have revised combustion, cooling, controls and fuel injection. Detailed horsepower and torque ratings have not yet been released, so any specific output figures circulating before GM publishes final specifications should be treated cautiously.

GM has nevertheless made a major claim about the larger engine: the company says its new naturally aspirated 6.6-litre V8 will be the most powerful engine of its type in the half-ton pickup class, based on GM estimates and competitive information. The Sierra Denali Ultimate will receive the 6.6-litre as standard equipment. The trucks will also retain the 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel and an enhanced 2.7-litre TurboMax four-cylinder. Every engine in the redesigned Sierra is paired with a 10-speed automatic, and Chevrolet says the TurboMax now moves to a 10-speed as well. Prioritizing new V8-equipped trucks therefore puts GM’s largest engineering investment immediately in front of customers.

Denali Ultimate Is Designed to Be a Rolling Showroom

Few trucks demonstrate GM’s premium strategy as clearly as the 2027 Sierra Denali Ultimate. Beyond its standard 6.6-litre V8, GMC says the cabin incorporates more than 60 inches of combined digital displays. That collection includes a 16.3-inch central infotainment display, a 12.2-inch driver information screen, an 11.5-inch passenger display, a 15-inch head-up display and an 8.5-inch digital rear-camera mirror. The centre display can even articulate to expose storage behind it, turning something as ordinary as dashboard packaging into a product demonstration.

The rest of the cabin pushes the Sierra farther toward luxury-SUV territory without removing its truck hardware. Denali Ultimate uses forged-wood detailing and a 16-speaker Bose Premium Series system that includes speakers mounted in the front head restraints. GMC also includes three years of Super Cruise service, with compatible hands-free driving available while trailering on supported roads. GM says the network covers more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads across Canada and the United States. Putting a configuration like this into early production gives dealers a model capable of demonstrating nearly every major technology introduced with the redesign in a single test drive.

Silverado High Country Gets Its Own Luxury Push

Chevrolet has taken a similar approach with High Country, although the Silverado retains a distinct identity rather than becoming a less expensive copy of the Sierra. Chevrolet describes High Country as the most premium expression of the new Silverado. Exterior details include a trim-exclusive Tritan Satin grille and standard 22-inch machine-faced wheels, while the cabin receives real wood, unique trim, specialized seat treatments and available microfiber-suede materials. A panoramic sunroof appears on a Silverado High Country for the first time.

Technology also closes much of the gap between a traditional pickup and an upscale passenger vehicle. Every 2027 Silverado gets a standard 16.3-inch centre display and a 12.2-inch digital instrument panel. High Country and ZR2 go further with a standard 11.5-inch passenger screen, head-up display and rear-camera mirror, taking their total digital-display area beyond 60 inches. Super Cruise becomes standard on both High Country and ZR2 and can support compatible hands-free driving while towing. For buyers accustomed to older pickups with relatively simple dashboards, the difference between generations will be immediately visible before the engine even starts.

ZR2 and AT4X Show Why Premium Trucks Are No Longer Just Luxury Trucks

GM’s off-road flagships complicate the idea that premium pickups are simply leather-lined highway cruisers. The 2027 Silverado ZR2 moves to 35-inch mud-terrain tires, a two-inch factory lift, front and rear electronic locking differentials and Multimatic DSSV dampers supplemented by jounce dampers. Chevrolet is also introducing forged carbon-fibre trim inside the ZR2, while the available Bison package developed with American Expedition Vehicles adds specialized bumpers, underbody protection and beadlock-capable wheels.

GMC’s AT4X follows a similar but distinct formula. It receives 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires for the first time, front and rear electronic lockers, a two-inch lift and new Multimatic jounce-control dampers. A panoramic sunroof is standard, while the interior uses a Timber Mahogany theme and upgraded seating. GMC will also continue offering an AEV Edition. These trucks demonstrate why an early production mix tilted toward expensive configurations can encompass more than Denali Ultimate and High Country. Buyers increasingly pay substantial premiums for specialized capability as well as traditional luxury, giving GM several high-margin ways to introduce the redesigned platform.

Less Expensive Trucks Still Receive a Major Technology Upgrade

Starting premium does not mean GM is abandoning the customers who use these trucks as equipment rather than status symbols. Chevrolet’s 2027 range still begins with Work Truck, followed by Custom, Custom Trail Boss and the newly named Silverado trim before reaching Trail Boss, ZR2 and High Country. GMC will offer Pro, Elevation, AT4 and Denali beneath AT4X and Denali Ultimate. Those lower and middle trims remain essential for fleets, contractors, municipalities and buyers who cannot justify a truck approaching luxury-car pricing.

More importantly, GM is no longer reserving all of the visible technology for its most expensive versions. Chevrolet says the 16.3-inch centre screen and 12.2-inch digital driver display are standard across the entire Silverado range, including Work Truck. A lengthy collection of driver-assistance features is also standard, including adaptive cruise control, reverse automatic braking, front pedestrian and bicyclist braking, front and rear park assist and blind-zone steering assistance. That creates an unusual launch dynamic: shoppers waiting for lower trims may receive fewer luxury materials and specialty features, but the basic cabin will no longer look dramatically stripped down beside the early flagship trucks.

Buyers May See the Premium Trucks Before the Full Lineup Fills Out

Chevrolet says the next-generation Silverado 1500 is expected to go on sale near the end of 2026, while GMC says the first redesigned Sierra 1500s should reach dealerships before the end of the calendar year. Earlier industry reporting placed the start of regular production around October, although such plant schedules are tentative and can move. Neither Chevrolet nor GMC has released complete 2027 pricing, and GM continues to hold back final specifications for its new V8 engines.

That leaves an important caveat for anyone watching the first trucks arrive on dealer lots. An early concentration of Denali Ultimate, High Country, AT4X, ZR2 and other V8-heavy configurations would not necessarily represent the long-term product mix. Automakers routinely phase in engines, body styles and equipment combinations during a major changeover as factories stabilize production. Once the launch matures, GM has every reason to broaden availability: commercial operators need Work Trucks and Pros, while mainstream buyers make up a large part of the full-size pickup market. The first 2027 trucks may therefore show GM’s most profitable and technologically impressive face, but they will not be the whole story.
