BYD has crossed a charging-infrastructure milestone that would have sounded extraordinarily ambitious only months ago. On August 28, the Chinese automaker marked the opening of its 10,000th Flash Charging station at a flagship facility in Shenzhen, roughly doubling the network from the 5,000 stations it had in operation on April 1. The expansion is designed to support BYD’s newest electric vehicles and its second-generation Blade Battery, which can take advantage of charging power far beyond what most passenger EVs can currently accept. More importantly, BYD is no longer treating charging as infrastructure supplied by somebody else. It is increasingly building an ecosystem around the vehicle, battery, charger and energy storage system at the same time—a strategy that could reshape how automakers compete as charging speed becomes almost as important as driving range.

A 10,000-Station Milestone Arrived Remarkably Fast

BYD celebrated its 10,000th Flash Charging station at the Longhua flagship location in Shenzhen, the company’s home city. The speed of the rollout is arguably more important than the headline number. BYD had reached 5,000 stations by April 1 and 7,018 by June 30, meaning another 2,982 were added in less than two months before the August milestone. Executives said the network averaged roughly 55 new installations per day during its first six months. It has expanded into hundreds of Chinese cities rather than remaining concentrated solely in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and other major coastal markets.

Usage figures suggest those chargers are already doing more than serving as a technology showcase. BYD reported more than 1.83 million network users and approximately 210 million kilowatt-hours of electricity delivered since the new Flash Charging strategy began. Nearly one-third of users reportedly drive vehicles made by other manufacturers. That matters because BYD is effectively turning infrastructure developed to make its own EVs more attractive into a public charging asset. Other EVs cannot necessarily take the full 1,500-kW rate, but allowing them onto the network increases utilization and gives BYD another way to place its brand directly in front of rival automakers’ customers.

The 1,500-kW Charger Changes the Charging-Speed Conversation

The hardware behind the rollout is unusually powerful. BYD introduced its latest Flash Charging system and second-generation Blade Battery on March 5, saying a single connector can deliver as much as 1,500 kW under appropriate conditions. When paired with a compatible vehicle, the company says the battery can move from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine. BYD has also demonstrated a 20%-to-97% recharge in roughly 12 minutes at minus 30 degrees Celsius, an important benchmark because cold-weather charging remains a weakness for many battery-electric vehicles.

Those figures should not be interpreted as speeds every EV will receive simply by plugging into a BYD station. A charger supplies only as much power as the vehicle’s battery, thermal-management system and electrical architecture can accept. Most EVs on the road today are engineered for dramatically lower peak rates. BYD’s advantage comes from developing the charger and battery together. Its Blade Battery 2.0 was specifically engineered for higher charging performance, while the Flash Charger was designed around that capability. In practical terms, the approach moves the bottleneck away from the charging post and increasingly toward the vehicle itself—putting pressure on competing automakers to improve battery chemistry, cooling and high-voltage architectures.

Energy Storage Helps BYD Deal With a Huge Grid Challenge

Installing a 1.5-megawatt charger is not as simple as placing a conventional fast charger in a parking space. Pulling that much electricity directly from the grid, particularly when several vehicles arrive simultaneously, can require expensive utility upgrades and substantial local capacity. BYD has therefore designed its Flash Charging ecosystem around energy-storage equipment that can accumulate electricity and release it rapidly during charging sessions. The concept resembles an enormous stationary power bank: energy can be stored when grid demand is lower and delivered to a vehicle in a much shorter burst when required.

That architecture could become crucial as charging sites move toward megawatt-scale output. BYD has also pursued partnerships rather than attempting to acquire thousands of high-value charging locations independently. Its collaborators include major Chinese energy and charging companies, with Sinopec among the most significant. BYD has said most of its planned 20,000-station Chinese network will be developed with partners, while roughly 2,000 installations are intended for highway locations. Leveraging existing fuel stations, retail properties and charging operators gives BYD access to locations where motorists already stop, potentially allowing the physical charging network to grow almost as quickly as the technology behind it.

Reaching 20,000 by December Is the Next Test

The 10,000-station milestone puts BYD halfway to its stated target of 20,000 Flash Charging stations in China by the end of 2026. Yet the second half could be more difficult than the first. With only about four months remaining after August 28, the company would need to add roughly 10,000 additional stations—or close to 80 per day on average—to meet the target. That would require a substantially faster pace than the approximately 55 installations per day cited for the rollout so far. In other words, reaching 10,000 demonstrates scale, but it does not make the year-end commitment automatic.

Partnerships are central to closing that gap. BYD has indicated that approximately 18,000 of the planned 20,000 stations are expected to involve charging-network partners, with the remaining 2,000 focused on highways. Cooperation with companies such as Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC and established charging operators gives BYD access to land, grid connections and existing customer traffic that would take years to reproduce independently. If the 20,000 target is achieved, BYD will have created a large proprietary high-power network in less time than many international charging projects require simply to move from planning through permitting and construction.

BYD Is Turning Charging Into a Competitive Weapon

The broader significance is that BYD increasingly controls multiple layers of the EV experience. It makes vehicles, develops its own batteries and power electronics, manufactures charging equipment and is helping build the network that connects them. That vertical integration gives the company an opportunity to market something much easier for consumers to understand than battery chemistry: less time waiting beside a charger. Chairman Wang Chuanfu has repeatedly framed the goal around making electric charging feel more like conventional refuelling, and a nine-minute near-full recharge is designed directly around that consumer expectation.

The strategy is also moving beyond China. BYD said when it introduced Blade Battery 2.0 that Flash Charging would eventually be deployed internationally, and installations have since begun appearing overseas. Its premium Denza brand has demonstrated 1,500-kW charging in Europe, and BYD has begun developing a British network, with hundreds of installations planned there. Brazil is another market identified for significant future deployment. Whether every market can accommodate 1.5-megawatt charging economically remains an open question, but BYD’s 10,000-station milestone shows that ultra-fast charging has moved from a laboratory claim to infrastructure being installed at industrial scale.
