BYD is giving the public a much closer look at one of its most technologically ambitious SUVs just as the company’s long-anticipated Canadian expansion begins to feel more tangible. The automaker has revealed the five-seat cabin of the Sealion 08, its new flagship Ocean-series SUV, only days before the vehicle’s scheduled September 2 launch in China.

The timing is especially noteworthy in Canada. BYD’s newly active Canadian passenger-vehicle website now carries a “Coming Soon” message, while the company is preparing a dealer-based retail operation. Yet there is still no official Canadian model list, pricing or sales date. That leaves the Sealion 08 in an intriguing position: it demonstrates how quickly BYD’s products are advancing, but Canadian shoppers still do not know whether this particular SUV—or which of the company’s many other vehicles—will eventually reach local showrooms.

The Five-Seat Cabin Arrives Just Before Launch

BYD disclosed the five-seat Sealion 08 interior on August 29, only a few days before the SUV’s September 2 Chinese launch. Zhang Zhuo, general manager of sales for BYD’s Ocean lineup, shared the latest cabin images after the six-seat configuration had been shown earlier. The staggered reveal has allowed BYD to present the SUV less as a single family vehicle and more as a flagship offered for distinctly different kinds of buyers.

The five-seat version trades the six-seater’s individual second-row captain’s chairs for a conventional rear bench, but BYD has not treated it as the basic configuration. The outer rear seats receive leg rests, while storage is integrated beneath the centre seating position. The cabin uses a pale beige treatment, extensive soft-touch and leather-covered surfaces, flowing ambient lighting and oval-shaped metallic air vents. Importantly, BYD also retains several physical controls on the centre console rather than moving every frequently used function into the touchscreen.

The Six-Seater Pushes the SUV Further Upmarket

The earlier six-seat cabin shows just how far BYD intends to stretch the Sealion name beyond an ordinary family crossover. Its 2+2+2 layout uses two individual second-row chairs with power adjustment, armrests and leg rests. Reports describing BYD’s official imagery also point to heating and ventilation functions, a folding table and an overhead entertainment display, creating an environment closer to an executive people mover than a traditional three-row SUV.

That distinction matters because BYD has increasingly been trying to move some products beyond the value-driven reputation associated with its earliest international expansion. The Sealion 08 also offers features such as a streaming rear-view mirror, ambient lighting and extensive cabin technology. With the six-seat arrangement, a passenger travelling in the second row is clearly treated as more than an afterthought. The approach resembles a broader Chinese-market trend in which larger electric and plug-in hybrid SUVs compete heavily on rear-seat comfort, entertainment and lounge-like features.

It Is a Properly Large Flagship SUV

The Sealion 08 measures 5,115 millimetres long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,800 mm tall, riding on a 3,030-mm wheelbase. Those numbers place it firmly in large-SUV territory and help explain why BYD can offer both spacious five-seat and three-row six-seat configurations without radically changing the basic body. Its exterior is derived from the Ocean S design concept, with split lighting, a broad stance and a roof-mounted sensor package on equipped versions.

Size alone, however, is not what makes this model important to BYD. The automaker describes the Sealion 08 as the flagship SUV of its Ocean family, putting it near the top of a range that has rapidly expanded across global markets. The Sealion name has also become increasingly significant commercially. According to figures compiled from BYD reports, Sealion-series sales reached 49,057 vehicles in July 2026, up more than 54 per cent from a year earlier, while first-seven-month volume reached 227,415 units.

Buyers Can Choose Between Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Power

BYD is launching the Sealion 08 with both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, reflecting the company’s broader strategy of selling multiple forms of electrification instead of relying entirely on pure EVs. The battery-electric version uses lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs listed at approximately 92.1 kWh and 115.1 kWh, with Chinese CLTC-rated ranges of 710, 800 or as much as 900 kilometres depending on configuration.

Power varies substantially as well. Single-motor electric versions are listed at 320 kW or 370 kW, while the most powerful dual-motor version combines a 215-kW front motor with a 370-kW rear motor. The plug-in hybrid uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine together with electric drive. Depending on configuration, BYD lists single- and dual-motor versions, while the longest-range PHEV is rated for as much as 400 kilometres of battery-only operation under China’s CLTC methodology. Canadian certification figures, if the model ever arrives, would differ from those Chinese test-cycle numbers.

Flash Charging Is Becoming a Major BYD Selling Point

One of the most interesting pieces of technology attached to the Sealion 08 is BYD’s Flash Charging system. The company says the SUV incorporates its second-generation Blade Battery and flash-charging technology, although published Sealion 08 specifications should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation that every version can accept the full 1,500-kW peak demonstrated by BYD’s newest charging hardware.

The wider technology is nevertheless remarkable. BYD says its latest Flash Charging architecture can deliver up to 1,500 kW through a single connector when paired with compatible vehicles and batteries. The company has demonstrated charging from 10 to 70 per cent in five minutes and to 97 per cent in nine minutes under specified conditions. At minus 30 C, BYD says a compatible vehicle can move from 20 to 97 per cent in roughly 12 minutes. Intriguingly for Canadians, the Canadian BYD website already gives prominent space to Flash Charging and those cold-weather claims.

Rear-Wheel Steering and Air Suspension Show the Engineering Ambition

Charging speed is only part of what distinguishes the Sealion 08. BYD has equipped the flagship with rear-wheel steering and its DiSus-A intelligent body-control system, along with dual-chamber air suspension and road-preview technology. Rear-wheel steering can effectively shorten the turning behaviour of a large vehicle at lower speeds while helping stability at higher speeds, an increasingly popular solution on premium SUVs that have grown beyond five metres in length.

The Sealion 08 also incorporates BYD’s latest assisted-driving technology, marketed in China under its God’s Eye 5.0 system. A roof-mounted lidar sensor is visible on versions shown publicly, while BYD’s published material describes navigation-assisted driving capabilities for urban roads and highways. How much of that software would function in Canada is another unanswered question. Driver-assistance systems depend heavily on local regulation, mapping, software validation and certification, so a Canadian Sealion 08—if offered—could carry a different feature package from the version launched in China.

Chinese Pre-Sale Pricing Shows BYD’s Positioning

Chinese pre-orders for the Sealion 08 opened on August 13. The plug-in hybrid range has been advertised from roughly 230,000 yuan, while battery-electric variants start at approximately 250,000 yuan. Higher configurations extend toward 280,000 yuan in pre-sale listings. Those prices establish the Sealion 08 above many of BYD’s mass-market products while keeping it significantly removed from the pricing territory occupied by some traditional luxury-brand flagship SUVs.

Direct currency conversions would be a poor guide to potential Canadian pricing. Vehicles imported into Canada face transportation, regulatory, distribution, equipment and taxation differences, and BYD has not announced the Sealion 08 for the market in the first place. Still, the Chinese positioning helps illustrate the challenge BYD could pose if it eventually brings similarly equipped vehicles here. The manufacturer combines large batteries, advanced chassis hardware and elaborate cabins at prices that have helped Chinese automakers intensify competition both at home and increasingly in overseas markets.

BYD’s Canadian Operation Is Becoming More Concrete

The Canadian story has moved considerably beyond rumours. BYD now operates a dedicated Canadian passenger-vehicle website through BYD Canada Company Limited in Markham, Ontario. Its homepage displays a prominent “Coming Soon” message and showcases company technologies including Flash Charging, Blade Battery 2.0 and DiSus. Recent reporting has also identified Canadian hiring for sales, marketing, network development, legal and operational positions as the company assembles its local organization.

BYD’s own Canadian legal terms provide an even stronger indication of how the business will operate. They state that vehicles will be sold through approved, independently operated dealers. At the same time, the terms explicitly say the website currently accepts no vehicle purchases, leases, financing applications, reservations, pre-orders or deposits. There is also no public launch date. That combination is important: BYD is clearly laying retail groundwork in Canada, but the company has not yet crossed the line from market preparation to a consumer sales launch.

Canada Still Has No Confirmed BYD Passenger-Vehicle Lineup

For Canadians watching the Sealion 08 reveal, the most important detail may be what BYD has not said. Its Canadian website does not identify any vehicle as confirmed for Canadian sale. The company’s terms even caution that international-market models, equipment or features displayed online may ultimately never be offered in Canada. That means the Sealion 08 should currently be viewed as a possible indicator of BYD’s capabilities—not as a confirmed Canadian product.

The environment for an eventual launch has nevertheless changed substantially. Canada implemented an annual quota permitting 49,000 Chinese-origin EVs to enter at the 6.1-per-cent most-favoured-nation tariff rate, replacing the previous 100-per-cent surtax for vehicles admitted under the quota. Statistics Canada also reported renewed momentum in electrified vehicles during the first quarter of 2026, with battery-EV registrations rising 12.9 per cent and plug-in hybrids climbing 22.9 per cent year over year. The next decisive step will be simple: BYD needs to name the cars Canadians can actually buy.
