A major piece of new automotive investment is landing directly on a Windsor-area factory floor. Plasman, the locally headquartered global parts supplier, has put C$10 million into four new injection-moulding machines at its Windsor 1 Manufacturing operation in Oldcastle, a move tied partly to newly secured programs from Honda and General Motors.
The investment is designed to expand production capability, improve efficiency and bring some previously subcontracted work inside the company. It is also associated with roughly 18 additional jobs at a plant that already employs about 300 people. At a time when Windsor’s automotive economy is confronting unusual cross-border trade uncertainty, the decision provides a tangible sign that at least one established supplier is still spending heavily on the region’s manufacturing future.
The Investment Is Going Straight Into Production
Plasman’s C$10-million expenditure is centred on four new injection-moulding machines at Windsor 1, located on Outer Drive in Oldcastle. The company formally showcased the equipment at a ribbon-cutting on September 9. Rather than being an office expansion or a longer-term development proposal, the spending has gone into production machinery that is already operational. Plasman says the equipment is intended to increase manufacturing capacity while helping the plant operate more efficiently.
Injection moulding sits at the heart of Plasman’s manufacturing capabilities. The company produces automotive components that include bumper fascias, grilles, exterior trim and subsystem parts, and it combines moulding with other processes such as tooling, painting and assembly. Large presses therefore affect far more than the amount of equipment sitting on the factory floor. More available capacity can influence how quickly components move through production, whether work can remain inside the plant and how reliably a supplier can meet an automaker’s launch and delivery requirements.
Honda and GM Wins Give the Spending a Clear Purpose
The new equipment was not purchased simply because management wanted newer machinery. Plasman North American President Rod Alward said the investment was made partly to support new programs the company had secured from Honda and General Motors. The exact vehicles or components associated with those programs were not publicly identified, an important distinction because there is no verified basis for attaching the investment to a specific upcoming model.
Both automakers, however, have longstanding relationships with the Windsor supplier. Plasman’s corporate history says it obtained its first Tier 1 work with General Motors in 1998 and began Tier 1 work with Honda in 2003. More recently, Plasman documented its involvement in producing multiple exterior components for the 2023 Honda CR-V, work that involved several of its Canadian operations. Winning additional business from established customers therefore represents a continuation of relationships that stretch back more than two decades rather than an entirely new entrance into either automaker’s supply chain.
The Job Gain Is Modest in Number but Concrete Locally
The investment is associated with roughly 18 additional jobs at Windsor 1. Local reporting puts the plant’s existing workforce at approximately 300 employees, meaning the increase is meaningful without dramatically altering the size of the operation. For a manufacturing community, however, even a relatively small group of permanent production jobs can matter when those positions are connected to newly awarded customer business and capital equipment intended to remain in service for years.
The employment effect also illustrates how modern factory investment does not always follow the old assumption that advanced machinery automatically eliminates jobs. In this case, Plasman says upgraded production capacity and the decision to perform more work internally are supporting additional employment. The human impact is easy to overlook beside a C$10-million headline: for workers entering those positions, the story is less about the price of an injection press and more about having another industrial employer committing production to the Windsor area during an unsettled period for Canadian auto manufacturing.
Bringing Subcontracted Work Back Inside Changes the Economics
One of the more significant details behind the project is Plasman’s decision to bring some work back into its own operation. Alward said portions of the production had previously been subcontracted. With additional machinery available, the company expects to perform more of that work internally, which management says should reduce costs while helping support the additional jobs connected to the investment.
Insourcing can change the economics of a manufacturing program in several ways even when the finished component remains the same. A supplier gains more direct control over scheduling, quality checks and production timing when a process takes place under its own roof rather than at an outside contractor. It can also reduce some of the coordination and transportation involved in moving work between companies. Plasman already promotes itself as a single-source supplier with capabilities extending from tooling and moulding through surface finishing and assembly. Expanding internal moulding capacity fits closely with that vertically integrated approach and gives the Windsor operation more control over work tied to major automaker contracts.
Faster Cycle Times Matter More Than They Sound
Management is emphasizing productivity as one of the central advantages of the four new presses. Alward said the newer equipment improves cycle times and production controls, helping Plasman manufacture higher-quality components in less time. In automotive supply chains, where factories can be producing thousands of components against tightly coordinated schedules, even relatively small improvements in how long each manufacturing cycle takes can accumulate over long production runs.
The other part of that equation is consistency. Automakers expect suppliers to deliver parts that meet specifications repeatedly and arrive when needed. A production problem at a parts manufacturer can potentially create complications farther down the chain when assembly operations depend on synchronized deliveries. Plasman specifically identified quality and on-time shipment as priorities for its customers. Newer equipment cannot eliminate every production challenge, but better controls and greater productivity give the plant more tools to manage those expectations. In practical terms, the C$10-million project is as much about dependable output as it is about increasing the theoretical number of parts the factory can make.
Energy Efficiency Is Part of the Business Case
Plasman has also identified improved energy efficiency as one purpose of the Windsor 1 investment. That matters because injection moulding is an industrial process built around substantial machinery, heat, pressure and repeated production cycles. The company has not publicly provided a specific percentage reduction in electricity use or an estimate of annual utility savings from the four presses, so claims about the exact environmental or financial impact would go beyond what has been disclosed.
Still, the decision to combine increased capacity with more efficient technology reflects a broader challenge facing established manufacturing plants. Companies do not simply need to make more products; they continually face pressure to make those products with tighter cost control. Replacing older industrial equipment can therefore serve several objectives simultaneously: improving production speed, upgrading control systems, reducing dependence on outside production and potentially lowering the energy required for manufacturing. For Windsor 1, the important point is that Plasman is treating efficiency as part of the investment case rather than viewing the project purely as a capacity expansion.
The Upgrade Was a Year in the Making
A C$10-million capital decision did not happen overnight. Alward said the company had been seriously planning the investment for roughly a year, even though the plant had wanted equipment upgrades earlier. That timeline offers useful context because winning an automotive program is only one part of preparing to manufacture it. Suppliers must determine whether existing equipment has sufficient capacity, whether new machinery makes economic sense and how production changes fit into customer schedules.
The project also highlights the long service life expected from heavy manufacturing machinery. Windsor 1 and Windsor 3 general manager David Toldo noted that some existing equipment has been operating for more than 25 years. He used that history to frame the four new machines as a long-term commitment rather than short-lived spending. That does not guarantee the new presses will still be running a quarter-century from now, but it illustrates how differently industrial investment is viewed from rapidly replaced consumer technology. A major production machine can influence a plant’s competitiveness through numerous vehicle programs and economic cycles.
The Spending Signals a Long-Term Bet on Windsor
The significance of the project becomes clearer when viewed against Plasman’s broader local presence. The company is headquartered in the Windsor area and employs roughly 2,500 people across six operations in the broader region, according to local reporting. Its Canadian footprint includes Windsor 1, Windsor 3, Windsor Tooling, Tecumseh Manufacturing, Tilbury Manufacturing and its global operations headquarters in Oldcastle.
That concentration means investment at a single facility is connected to a much wider regional manufacturing network. Plasman’s capabilities extend across engineering, tooling, injection moulding, finishing and assembly, allowing multiple operations to participate in automotive programs. The company demonstrated that model with its work on the 2023 Honda CR-V, which involved teams at Windsor Tooling, Windsor 1, Windsor 3, Tecumseh, Tilbury and another Plasman facility in Cleveland. In that context, four presses at Windsor 1 are more than isolated pieces of equipment. They become additional capacity inside a manufacturing system that already employs thousands of people around the Windsor area.
Plasman’s Roots Make the Expansion More Than a One-Off
Plasman’s connection to Windsor goes back to 1978, when the business that became the company opened as Build-A-Mold with just two employees. Windsor Plant 1 was built for injection moulding in 1997 as Plasman expanded and became more vertically integrated. The company secured its first Tier 1 General Motors work the next year and added Honda Tier 1 business in 2003. Those milestones help explain why another investment in moulding technology at Windsor 1 carries historical weight.
The company has since expanded internationally, but Windsor remains central to its identity and operations. Its global headquarters remains in Oldcastle, and its product portfolio includes exactly the kind of exterior components for which large-scale moulding capability is important. The contrast is striking: a business that started as a two-person Windsor mould shop is now spending C$10 million on four advanced presses to service programs from two of the world’s major automakers. That history does not guarantee future growth, but it demonstrates how local manufacturing expertise can evolve across generations of vehicles and technology.
Trade Uncertainty Makes the Timing Notable
The investment is arriving during an unusually difficult period for an automotive region deeply tied to the United States. Statistics Canada reported in April 2025 that automotive industries represented 43.1% of Windsor CMA manufacturing employment and 9.2% of total employment. Federal figures published in 2026 also show how exposed the national industry remains to cross-border conditions: more than 90% of Canadian-made vehicles and about 60% of Canadian-made auto parts are exported to the United States.
Alward acknowledged the Canada-U.S. trade dispute when discussing Plasman’s investment, saying the company must focus on factors it can control and deal with external problems as they emerge. That makes the decision to proceed with C$10 million in new machinery particularly noteworthy. It does not remove the risks facing Canadian suppliers, nor does it settle the industry’s larger trade challenges. What it does provide is a concrete counterpoint to the uncertainty: newly won customer programs, additional production brought in-house, upgraded Windsor machinery and approximately 18 more jobs attached to the investment.
