Why Some New Cars Feel Less Reliable Than the Old Ones They Replaced

A strange thing happens when a driver trades a familiar older car for its brand-new replacement: the newer one may be faster, safer, more efficient and packed with technology, yet somehow feel less dependable. The reason is often bigger than engines and transmissions. Modern vehicles rely on software, sensors, connectivity, touchscreens and electronic controls for functions that older cars handled with separate mechanical or analog parts. That creates new kinds of trouble—some serious, others merely irritating—that can shape confidence just as strongly as a breakdown. These 12 reasons explain why certain new cars can feel less reliable than the models they replaced, while also showing why “more complicated” does not automatically mean “worse built.”

Reliability Now Includes Software, Not Just Hardware

For decades, “reliable” usually meant an engine that started every morning, a transmission that shifted properly, and accessories that kept working. Modern cars still have those mechanical responsibilities, but they also carry an expanding digital workload. Infotainment, cameras, radar, driver-assistance computers, phone integration, wireless charging, digital instrument panels and dozens of software-controlled conveniences now shape the ownership experience. A car can therefore run perfectly while still presenting its owner with frozen screens, failed connections or persistent warning messages.

That distinction helps explain the disconnect between mechanical durability and perceived dependability. J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study recorded an industry average of 204 problems per 100 three-year-old vehicles, the highest level since the study was redesigned in 2022. Infotainment alone accounted for 56.7 problems per 100 vehicles, more than any other category. The modern owner is not necessarily stranded more often; there are simply far more systems capable of creating a frustrating moment.

One Screen Can Now Control Half the Car

A dashboard used to divide responsibilities among separate switches, knobs and buttons. If the radio failed, the heater controls could still work. In many newer vehicles, a single central display now handles audio, navigation, climate settings, camera views and numerous vehicle settings that once had dedicated hardware. That integration looks clean and saves physical space, but it can also turn one glitch into a much larger inconvenience. A frozen or rebooting screen may suddenly interfere with several everyday functions at once.

Recent owner research shows why this matters. J.D. Power has repeatedly identified touchscreen usability as a source of frustration as manufacturers migrate more functions into digital interfaces. The problem is not only whether a screen eventually works. It is also whether routine tasks require excessive tapping, menu hunting or attention away from the road. In J.D. Power’s 2026 Initial Quality Study, 46% of owners who described a distraction-related vehicle problem identified the infotainment system or touchscreen as its source. A simpler old dashboard could feel more dependable simply because its important functions remained physically separated.

The Smartphone Has Become Part of the Reliability Equation

Many of the most common “car problems” now begin with a smartphone. Wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto may refuse to connect, Bluetooth can drop a call, a charging pad may stop charging, or an automaker app may fail to update vehicle status. None of those issues necessarily says anything about the condition of the engine, brakes or transmission. Yet when they happen during the morning commute, they become part of the owner’s judgment about whether the vehicle works properly.

The scale of that frustration is measurable. In J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability study, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity was the industry’s most frequently reported problem for a third consecutive year at 8.9 problems per 100 vehicles. Bluetooth, wireless charging and automaker-app connectivity added another 15.3 problems per 100 vehicles. Together, those four phone-related areas accounted for 24.2 problems per 100 vehicles—nearly half of all infotainment problems in the study. An older car with a basic radio and an auxiliary connection simply had fewer opportunities for the surrounding digital ecosystem to cause trouble.

Software Updates Make the Vehicle a Moving Target

Over-the-air updates promise something older cars could never offer: the ability to improve software without a dealership visit. They can add features, correct bugs and change how systems behave long after a vehicle leaves the factory. The trade-off is that the car is no longer a completely fixed product. Its interface, settings or software behavior may change during ownership, and every update becomes another moment when something must install correctly and remain compatible with the rest of the vehicle.

That moving-target feeling shows up in owner feedback. J.D. Power reported in 2026 that 40% of owners in its three-year dependability study had received a vehicle software update during the previous 12 months. Only 27% of those owners said the update improved the vehicle, while 58% noticed no meaningful difference. Nearly two-thirds of the updates were delivered over the air. Updates are not inherently unreliable—many solve legitimate problems—but they create a new maintenance layer that older vehicles simply did not have. A fifteen-year-old sedan might never gain a new feature, yet it also never wakes up with revised software behavior that needs troubleshooting.

Driver-Assistance Alerts Can Erode Confidence

Driver-assistance technology can prevent crashes and improve road safety, but it also changes the relationship between driver and machine. Lane-departure warnings, blind-spot alerts, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control constantly interpret the road and decide when to warn or intervene. When those systems are calibrated well, they can fade into the background. When alerts seem too frequent, poorly timed or intrusive, owners may interpret the behaviour as evidence that the vehicle is temperamental—even if no component has technically failed.

J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. ADAS Quality and Satisfaction Study found that advanced driver-assistance systems represented 12.8% of all new-vehicle problems measured in that research, with alerts forming the largest ADAS problem area. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has also noted that crash-avoidance systems become less useful when drivers find them annoying, confusing or untrustworthy and disable them. That is a different kind of reliability problem from a worn alternator or leaking radiator. The car may technically be operating as designed, but repeated unwanted alerts can still weaken confidence in the machine.

A Minor Repair Can Become a Technology Repair

A small parking-lot bump or cracked windshield used to be mostly a body-shop problem. On a newer vehicle, the same incident may involve radar units, ultrasonic sensors or cameras mounted behind the glass, bumper or mirror. Replacing the damaged part can be only one step; many systems also require precise calibration so the vehicle continues to interpret distance, lane markings and surrounding traffic correctly. That added process can make a modern car seem delicate compared with an older model that had no sensors in those locations.

AAA estimated in a 2023 study that advanced driver-assistance components could account for as much as 37.6% of the total repair cost after certain crashes. In the vehicles AAA evaluated, ADAS parts and calibration in a minor front-end repair averaged about $1,540. IIHS research adds another concern: among owners who had crash-avoidance features repaired, roughly half reported problems with those features afterward, with higher rates after crash damage or windshield replacement. These systems provide important safety benefits, but a repair once considered routine can now involve electronics, calibration targets, software and specialized diagnostic work.

New Powertrains Can Bring Growing Pains

Electrification has made the reliability conversation more complicated, not simpler. A battery-electric vehicle eliminates oil changes, spark plugs and a conventional multi-speed transmission, but introduces high-voltage batteries, charging equipment, power electronics, thermal-management systems and software. Plug-in hybrids add many of those electric systems while retaining a combustion engine and fuel system. That can create additional potential trouble spots during the early years of a new platform, particularly when manufacturers introduce unfamiliar architectures and technology simultaneously.

Current data also shows why “more parts equals less reliable” is too crude a rule. Consumer Reports’ latest findings say conventional hybrids average about 15% fewer problems than gas-only cars, evidence that mature electrified technology can be exceptionally dependable. The same research found EVs and plug-in hybrids averaging roughly 80% more problems than gas-only vehicles, with many difficulties associated with newer designs and technology. J.D. Power’s 2026 three-year dependability research also found higher problem counts for plug-in hybrids and battery EVs than gasoline vehicles. The lesson is not that electrification is inherently unreliable. Maturity, design and execution matter enormously.

First-Year Redesigns Have More Bugs to Work Out

The old car being replaced is often the final product of years of quiet refinement. During a model generation, manufacturers revise software, change suppliers, strengthen weak components and improve factory processes. A completely redesigned replacement may share the same badge but be a very different machine underneath, with a new electrical architecture, powertrain, cabin interface or manufacturing process. That is why a brand with a strong reputation can still produce a first-year redesign that feels less sorted than the outgoing model.

Consumer Reports has repeatedly found that newly introduced or heavily redesigned vehicles tend to have more reliability problems than models later in their production cycles. Its latest reliability guidance again advises dependability-focused shoppers to be cautious with first-year redesigns, noting several recently redesigned vehicles with disappointing results. J.D. Power found a similar pattern in its 2023 Initial Quality Study, where newly launched models averaged 11 more problems per 100 vehicles than carryover models. Buyers sometimes assume “new generation” automatically means “improved in every way.” In practice, the older version may have benefited from years of corrections that its replacement has only started accumulating.

More Luxury Features Mean More Things to Manage

Luxury once suggested heavier materials, quieter cabins and more elaborate construction. Today it also tends to mean more technology: larger displays, complex seat functions, electronically managed chassis features, extensive lighting systems, additional cameras and layers of convenience equipment. Every feature can be genuinely useful, but each creates another component, control or software interaction that needs to function consistently. A simpler mainstream vehicle can consequently deliver a calmer ownership experience despite offering substantially less equipment.

J.D. Power’s 2026 dependability data illustrates the difference. Three-year-old premium vehicles averaged 217 problems per 100 vehicles, 17 more than mass-market vehicles, and premium models performed worse in seven of the study’s nine categories. The largest gaps were in features, controls and displays, and in driving experience—not powertrains. Interestingly, J.D. Power’s separate 2026 Initial Quality Study showed premium brands performing slightly better than mass-market brands during their first 90 days. That contrast matters. Feature-heavy vehicles are not automatically badly manufactured, but longer ownership gives their numerous systems more opportunities to produce the inconveniences that owners eventually remember.

The Car Now Depends on an App, a Server and a Connection

The modern ownership experience increasingly extends beyond the car itself. Automaker apps can lock doors, start climate control, check fuel or battery status, locate a vehicle and schedule charging. When these services work, they are genuinely useful. But they can also depend on the phone, the app, the manufacturer’s servers, the vehicle’s cellular connection and software linking everything together. A failure anywhere in that chain can feel like a vehicle problem because the function being requested ultimately belongs to the car.

J.D. Power’s 2025 research on apps for internal-combustion vehicles found that nearly 80% of owners used their manufacturer’s app. Among the 38% of owners who had stopped using it, connectivity was the most common reason, while 14% cited unreliable remote start and another 14% cited unintuitive interfaces. Its EV-app research separately found connectivity complaints among 37% of non-Tesla users. Older cars had no remote climate app that could fail—but they also offered no remote climate app at all. Modern vehicles can therefore be considerably more capable while simultaneously giving owners far more digital touchpoints capable of disappointing them.

Simple Mechanical Functions Are Becoming Electrical Functions

Some new conveniences replace mechanical actions with electrically controlled ones. Flush electronic handles, powered latches and push-button releases are increasingly visible examples. The issue is not that every electronically controlled door system is unreliable. It is that a function once completed through relatively simple mechanical hardware can now depend on battery power, switches, control modules and software. That makes certain low-voltage electrical problems capable of affecting functions drivers rarely associated with a battery in older vehicles.

Recent safety actions show why engineers and regulators are paying closer attention. In 2025, U.S. regulators opened an investigation into reports that exterior electronic door handles on certain 2021 Tesla Model Y vehicles could become inoperative when low-voltage battery power was insufficient. Ford separately recalled 197,432 Mustang Mach-E vehicles because a low battery condition could leave electronic door latches locked and create a re-entry problem under specific circumstances. Euro NCAP’s 2026 protocols also strengthened post-crash requirements involving electrically powered exterior door handles. These are model-specific cases rather than evidence against electronic latches generally, but they demonstrate how familiar functions can acquire entirely new failure modes.

The Definition of a “Problem” Has Changed

Part of the reliability debate comes down to what owners now count as a problem. Traditional breakdowns still matter, and Consumer Reports continues to track serious trouble areas involving engines, transmissions, EV batteries, drive systems and other hardware. But modern reliability and quality research also captures software updates, displays, phone integration, electronic accessories and controls that are difficult to use. That broader definition better reflects daily ownership, yet it means a new vehicle can accumulate complaints in ways that would have been impossible for an older, less connected machine.

J.D. Power has long distinguished between outright defects and design-related problems, including features that function but are confusing or awkward to operate. Its more recent studies demonstrate why that distinction has become increasingly important as cars gain technology. This is a major reason certain replacements feel less dependable even when they are safer, quicker, cleaner or more mechanically sophisticated. The older vehicle may simply have had fewer capabilities. Because its replacement asks the owner to interact with far more systems every day, there are also far more opportunities for a small glitch to undermine confidence.
