A trade dispute that began at the border quickly found its way onto Canadian vehicle configurators. In April 2025, Tesla raised prices across much of its Canadian lineup, with some increases reaching $30,000, after Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on vehicles imported from the United States.
The distinction matters. The Model 3 Performance moved from $79,990 to $89,990. The Model Y Long Range climbed even more sharply, from $69,990 to $84,990. Those were substantial changes for shoppers who might have been comparing monthly budgets only days earlier.
The biggest dollar increase landed on the Cybertruck Cyberbeast. Its Canadian price jumped from $137,990 to $167,990—a $30,000 difference. The Cybertruck All-Wheel Drive moved to $139,990, representing an increase of roughly 22%. Tesla simultaneously encouraged Canadian customers to search its remaining inventory for vehicles carrying pre-tariff pricing. That created an unusual two-tier market: cars already brought across the border could cost materially less than newly imported examples of essentially the same vehicle.
The Tariff Chain Started in Washington but Did Not End There
The pricing shock grew out of a wider North American trade confrontation. On April 3, 2025, the United States imposed a 25% tariff on imported passenger vehicles and light trucks. For Canadian vehicles that met CUSMA rules of origin, the tariff treatment recognized U.S. content, but the measure still represented a major disruption for Canada’s highly integrated automotive industry.
Ottawa answered six days later. Beginning April 9, Canada imposed 25% counter-tariffs on non-CUSMA-compliant vehicles imported from the United States and on the non-Canadian and non-Mexican content of compliant U.S.-made vehicles. That distinction is crucial when interpreting Tesla’s Canadian increases. The American tariff did not simply appear as a Canadian Tesla charge. Instead, it provoked Canada’s reciprocal measure, which then affected American-built vehicles entering Canada. Tesla Was More Exposed Than Automakers With Canadian Factories
Canada created a remission framework to soften the effect of its counter-tariffs on automakers that maintained significant domestic production and investment. Eligible manufacturers could receive relief allowing specified quantities of CUSMA-compliant U.S.-assembled vehicles into Canada without paying the full counter-tariff, provided they continued meeting Canadian manufacturing commitments.
Tesla occupied a different position. The company had major vehicle-production operations in California and Texas, along with factories in China and Germany, but no vehicle assembly plant in Canada. That meant its business did not fit the same domestic-production model underlying Canada’s remission policy. Tesla’s own corporate filings have repeatedly emphasized the value of manufacturing vehicles close to customers because local production can reduce transportation expenses and exposure to tariffs. The Canadian experience provided a practical illustration. When vehicles sourced from American factories suddenly faced a Canadian counter-tariff, Tesla either had to absorb the additional cost, raise prices, change sourcing—or combine those responses.
The Cybertruck Became the Clearest Example of Tariff Exposure
Nothing illustrated the size of the adjustment better than the Cybertruck. The Cyberbeast’s Canadian sticker price moved from $137,990 to $167,990 in the April 2025 reset. Its $30,000 jump was the largest absolute increase reported across Tesla’s Canadian range, while the less powerful All-Wheel Drive Cybertruck rose to $139,990.
The Cybertruck was particularly exposed because Tesla builds the vehicle in Texas. Unlike the Model Y, which Tesla also produces in Germany and China, there was no mature overseas Cybertruck factory that could simply become an alternative source for Canadian deliveries. Current Canadian listings continue to show the Cyberbeast at $167,990, demonstrating how some effects of that pricing era have lasted much longer than others. The Model 3 and Model Y were more consequential for the broader EV market because they had long served as Tesla’s higher-volume products. An $11,000 increase pushed the Model 3 Long Range AWD to $79,990, while the Model Y Long Range’s $15,000 increase took it to $84,990. At those prices, the vehicles were competing in a significantly different part of the market than they had occupied before the tariff reset.
That mattered because Canadian EV buyers were already becoming more price-sensitive. Tesla was no longer operating in a market with only a handful of credible battery-electric alternatives. Industry registration data cited by Automotive News Canada showed slightly more than 9,000 Teslas registered during the first half of 2025, compared with more than 26,000 in the first half of 2024—a decline of roughly 67%. Full-year estimates later placed Canadian Tesla registrations below 20,000.
It would be inaccurate to attribute that collapse solely to tariffs. Tesla faced a combination of problems. Federal EV incentives disappeared early in the year, Quebec temporarily paused its own rebate program, competitors introduced increasingly credible electric models, and CEO Elon Musk’s political activities generated significant consumer backlash in Canada and other markets. Prices themselves also changed repeatedly. The important point is that the tariff increase landed in the middle of those pressures. Canada’s Auto Industry Shows Why Retaliation Gets Complicated
Canada and the United States do not operate separate automotive economies in any simple sense. Vehicles and parts frequently cross the border during production, and the industry developed around decades of continental integration. Canadian government figures show that Canada exported $44.4 billion in finished vehicles to the United States in 2024 while importing $35.6 billion worth of vehicles from its southern neighbour.
More than 40% of vehicles sold in Canada were assembled in the United States, according to the federal government’s explanation of its tariff-remission system. That is why Ottawa created special relief for automakers maintaining Canadian assembly operations rather than applying the counter-tariff without exceptions. The industry supports more than 125,000 direct Canadian jobs and hundreds of thousands of additional jobs linked to the sector. Tesla’s price changes showed the consumer side of that interconnected system: retaliation designed to pressure another government can increase import costs at home, encouraging automakers to redirect supply chains and buyers to reconsider purchases.
Tesla Eventually Found Another Route Into Canada
By 2026, the pricing picture had changed dramatically. Canada reached an arrangement with China allowing an initial quota of 49,000 Chinese-made EVs annually to enter at the normal 6.1% most-favoured-nation tariff rate instead of the previous additional 100% surtax. Tesla was well positioned to use that opening because its Shanghai factory already produces the Model 3 and Model Y. Reuters reported in September 2026 that Tesla’s Shanghai-built vehicle sales included exports to Canada, while Tesla’s Canadian pricing now lists a Model 3 Premium rear-wheel-drive version with an MSRP of $39,490 and a Model Y rear-wheel-drive model at $49,990. The five-figure increases imposed on certain U.S.-sourced Teslas in 2025 were not necessarily permanent across the lineup once Tesla gained access to another production base.
The $30,000 Increase Became a Lesson in How Trade Wars Reach Consumers
Canada’s automobile counter-tariffs remain in place in 2026, according to the Department of Finance. Ottawa has maintained them while continuing to seek removal of U.S. measures against Canadian auto exports. The government has simultaneously renewed its remission system for eligible Canadian producers, showing how trade policy has evolved from a simple tariff-for-tariff response into a more targeted industrial strategy.
For consumers, Tesla’s experience offers a clear lesson. Vehicle pricing can increasingly depend not only on the badge, battery or features but also on where a specific model is assembled and which trade rules apply when it crosses a border. The same Tesla nameplate can move between U.S., European and Chinese factories as the company responds to tariffs and market conditions.
