Jaguar’s reinvention has moved from provocative concept-car theatre to something much closer to a showroom reality. The Type 01, the all-electric four-door grand tourer that will lead the British marque’s next generation, has made its North American prototype debut during Monterey Car Week, culminating with an appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 16.
For Canadians, there is another important signal. Jaguar’s Canadian website is already prominently advertising the Type 01 as “The four-door GT. Coming Soon.” The car remains officially in the pre-launch stage, with final specifications, pricing and Canadian availability details still to come. But after years of plans, prototypes and the dramatic Type 00 design concept, Jaguar is finally putting a name, cabin and increasingly concrete technical details behind its electric transformation.
North America Gets Its First Close Look at the Type 01
Monterey Car Week was a natural place for Jaguar to bring the Type 01 to North America. The annual gathering on California’s Monterey Peninsula brings together collector cars, luxury manufacturers, new concepts and some of the industry’s wealthiest potential customers. Jaguar said its Type 01 prototype would appear in a distinctive new camouflage wrap during the week, with the program culminating at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 16. The event itself celebrated its 75th edition in 2026.
The timing matters because this is no longer simply the radical Type 00 design exercise Jaguar unveiled in Miami in 2024. Type 01 represents the production program that grew from that vision. Its exterior is still being deliberately obscured, meaning Jaguar has not yet shown every production detail, but its presence in California places the vehicle directly in one of the world’s most important luxury-car environments. The next step will be considerably bigger: Jaguar has scheduled the full Type 01 reveal for October 6, 2026, in New York.
Jaguar Canada Is Already Preparing the Market
The strongest Canadian clue does not come from an anonymous report or dealer rumour. Jaguar’s official Canadian homepage currently carries the message “New Name. New Era,” immediately followed by “Type 01. The four-door GT. Coming Soon.” Its dedicated new-era page repeats the message while showing the vehicle as it progresses toward production. That is much more concrete than simply having a Canadian press release available on a global media site.
There are still important limits to what “Coming Soon” means. Jaguar Canada has not published Canadian pricing, a firm on-sale date, trim structure or final market-specific specifications. Jaguar also warns that the Type 01 being shown represents the vehicle as it enters production and that final customer models and features can change before launch. For prospective Canadian buyers, that distinction matters. The website establishes that Jaguar is actively marketing the Type 01 in Canada, but it does not yet amount to an open order book or confirmed delivery timetable. October’s New York unveiling should provide a much clearer picture.
The Type 01 Name Connects Jaguar’s Past With Its Electric Reset
Jaguar officially confirmed the Type 01 name in May 2026, ending months in which the production model was generally described simply as the electric four-door GT inspired by Type 00. The company says each part of the name has a purpose. “Type” links the vehicle to historic Jaguars such as the C-type and E-type. The zero represents electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions, while the one identifies the car as the first model of Jaguar’s new generation.
That historical reference is more deliberate than it may initially appear. Jaguar notes that the “Type” designation appeared on the Le Mans-winning C-type in 1951, decades before the E-type became one of the company’s defining road cars. Yet Type 01 is not intended as a retro recreation. Jaguar has built the new model around the dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture, or JEA, rather than adapting an existing combustion platform. The result is supposed to combine the long, dramatic proportions associated with traditional grand tourers with packaging, propulsion and chassis technology designed specifically for a battery-electric vehicle.
More Than 1,000 PS Makes This Jaguar’s New Performance Flagship
The Type 01 may be designed as a luxury GT rather than a stripped-down supercar, but Jaguar is giving it serious performance credentials. The company has confirmed a tri-motor electric powertrain producing more than 1,000 PS and more than 1,300 Nm of torque. In horsepower terms, 1,000 metric horsepower is roughly 986 mechanical horsepower, placing the Type 01 far beyond the output of previous road-going Jaguars and making it the most powerful Jaguar production-car program the company has developed.
Power is only part of the engineering story. Jaguar has confirmed all-wheel drive and Intelligent Torque Vectoring, designed to distribute propulsion force rapidly and precisely between the driven wheels. Development prototypes have also been used to calibrate all-wheel steering, dynamic air suspension and active twin-valve dampers. The objective is not simply enormous acceleration. Jaguar’s engineers have repeatedly emphasized the combination traditionally expected of a grand tourer: strong performance when demanded, but refinement and composure over long distances. That balance will be crucial once independent road testing begins.
Arctic Testing Shows How Seriously Jaguar Is Treating Cold-Weather Performance
Canadian interest makes Jaguar’s winter-development program especially relevant. Earlier in 2026, Type 01 development vehicles were tested around the Arctic Circle in temperatures reaching approximately -40°C. Jaguar says the broader validation program involves 150 prototypes covering hundreds of thousands of miles across frozen lakes, hot desert highways, physical test facilities and advanced virtual environments. The company describes it as the most comprehensive development program it has undertaken for a Jaguar.
Cold-weather testing also provided an opportunity to refine ThermAssist, Jaguar’s thermal-management technology. The company says the system can reduce the energy consumed for heating by as much as 40 percent and recover heat for the cabin or propulsion system in temperatures down to -10°C. Range remains one area where final Type 01 certification figures are still awaited. When Jaguar first outlined the four-door GT program alongside Type 00, it targeted up to 770 kilometres under the WLTP cycle and 692 kilometres under the U.S. EPA cycle, plus as much as 321 kilometres of added range in approximately 15 minutes of rapid charging. Those remain targets rather than final Canadian ratings.
The Interior Is the Clearest Production Preview Yet
Although Jaguar continues to camouflage the Type 01’s production exterior, it has now shown considerably more of the cabin. The interior uses a prominent central spine running almost the entire length of the passenger compartment, creating four individual seating areas rather than a conventional open rear bench. Jaguar has chosen a low GT-style driving position, while the colours and material treatments are influenced by travertine stone, artisan textiles and brass-inspired finishes.
Technology is deliberately integrated rather than presented as a wall of screens. A slim dashboard carries the new infotainment interface, while Jaguar’s ClearSight Rear View Display is located centrally near the base of the windscreen and roughly aligned with the height of the exterior mirrors. Concealed storage and other functions are intended to remain visually hidden until needed. That approach is closely related to the extravagant Type 00 concept, but the significance is different now: Jaguar describes the Type 01 as its first production vehicle to adopt this new design philosophy. In other words, these ideas are no longer confined to a motor-show exercise.
Type 01 Arrives After Jaguar Deliberately Closed Its Previous Chapter
The Type 01 is launching into an unusually dramatic transition for a long-established automaker. JLR’s 2026 annual report describes 2025 as the final chapter for Jaguar’s outgoing vehicle generation, including the end of F-PACE production at Solihull and the conclusion of E-PACE, XEL and XFL production through the company’s Chinese joint venture. Instead of continuously replacing those cars with familiar successors, Jaguar effectively created space for a major repositioning.
Type 01 is the first product expected to define what replaces them. JLR describes Jaguar as a newly repositioned, all-electric luxury brand, while its wider corporate strategy identifies North America as a priority growth region alongside the United Kingdom, Europe and China. That makes the Monterey appearance and coming New York reveal particularly meaningful. Jaguar is not merely bringing another EV into an established model lineup; it is asking buyers to reconsider what the entire brand represents. The long gap between old Jaguar and new Jaguar raises the stakes considerably, because Type 01 will provide the first real measure of whether that strategy works.
Canada’s EV Market Makes the Timing Particularly Interesting
Type 01 will enter a Canadian market where electric-vehicle demand remains substantial but has also proved sensitive to pricing, incentives and policy changes. Statistics Canada recorded 43,113 new zero-emission vehicle registrations in the first quarter of 2026, accounting for 10.8 percent of all new vehicle registrations. That represented a 15.8 percent increase from the same quarter a year earlier. More recently, zero-emission vehicles accounted for 9.6 percent of new Canadian motor-vehicle sales in May.
Jaguar will occupy a very different part of that market from mainstream electric crossovers. No Canadian Type 01 price has been announced, and the brand’s strategy clearly positions the vehicle as a modern-luxury flagship rather than a volume EV. That makes desirability, design and performance at least as important as conventional value calculations. The Canadian “Coming Soon” message nevertheless confirms that the country is part of Jaguar’s public-facing launch buildup. For Canadian enthusiasts who have watched the transformation from Type 00 onward, the question has shifted from whether the radical new Jaguar will become real to exactly what production reality will cost.
October 6 Is Now the Date That Matters
For all the information Jaguar has released, several of the questions buyers care about most remain unanswered. The company still needs to disclose the Type 01’s complete production exterior, final battery and range specifications, charging details, equipment structure, pricing and market-by-market launch schedule. Jaguar has been careful to state that specifications can change before customer vehicles become available, making it risky to treat prototype details or outside price estimates as final numbers.
That makes October 6, 2026, the pivotal date. Jaguar says the Type 01 will be fully revealed in New York, shifting the car from a carefully staged series of prototypes and previews toward an actual production launch. Monterey has already accomplished something important: it has put Jaguar’s new flagship on North American soil while the Canadian division simultaneously tells visitors that the four-door GT is coming. Whether the Type 01 can turn its extraordinary styling, nearly four-figure horsepower output and ambitious brand positioning into buyer demand will come later. For now, Jaguar’s electric reset has moved significantly closer to the showroom.
