Geely is widening its global ambitions with a vehicle aimed directly at one of the most important parts of the modern auto market: the roomy, electrified family SUV. The Monjaro EM-i made its international launch in Egypt on August 30, beginning a rollout that Geely says will move through the Middle East, Latin America, Central Asia and Europe. At the same time, a separate but potentially consequential Geely story is developing in Canada. Geely-owned Lotus vehicles have begun arriving under Canada’s revised trade framework for Chinese-made EVs, while hiring activity in Toronto points to preparations for a broader Geely presence. There is no confirmed Canadian launch for the Monjaro EM-i, making that distinction important. Still, its unveiling shows the type of hybrid technology and larger SUV product Geely is increasingly positioning for buyers outside China.

Egypt Becomes the Starting Point for a Much Wider Rollout

Egypt is more than an isolated launch market for the Monjaro EM-i. Geely says the country marks the beginning of an international rollout that will next include the United Arab Emirates, Mexico and Kazakhstan before moving into European markets. That sequence places the SUV in regions with very different climates, fuel prices, road networks and consumer expectations. It also allows Geely to expand the Monjaro name without depending on a single mature market for early momentum. The gasoline-powered Monjaro is already familiar in several overseas regions, including parts of the Middle East and other international markets, but the EM-i represents a much more deliberate electrification push.

Geely is describing the vehicle as its first global hybrid SUV in the D-segment, a class typically occupied by larger family crossovers positioned above compact models. The company is offering front-wheel-drive Pro and Max versions as well as an Ultra model equipped with electric all-wheel drive. That mix matters because global SUV buyers do not all want the same formula. A city-focused customer may prioritize efficiency and price, while drivers in colder or less predictable conditions may value all-wheel-drive capability. Rather than building the rollout around an EV-only proposition, Geely is betting that a plug-in hybrid can bridge those needs while the charging environment develops at different speeds around the world.

The Monjaro Uses Geely’s Newest Hybrid Architecture

Underneath the Monjaro EM-i is Geely’s GEA Evo architecture, designed to accommodate electrified powertrains while integrating vehicle dynamics, safety and digital systems. The EM-i Super Hybrid setup pairs electric propulsion with a dedicated 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline engine. The all-wheel-drive version uses Geely’s e-AWD system rather than relying solely on a conventional mechanical connection to send power to the rear wheels. That type of configuration can react electronically when traction changes, an increasingly common approach among electrified SUVs because the rear motor can provide additional traction without the packaging demands of a traditional driveshaft.

Geely is also emphasizing handling rather than presenting the Monjaro simply as a fuel-saving SUV. According to the company, the vehicle recorded a 100-to-zero-km/h braking distance of 33 metres and completed a moose-test-style emergency maneuver at 79 km/h. Those figures are manufacturer claims rather than independent Canadian testing results, but they illustrate where Geely wants the product positioned. The SUV measures about 4.8 metres long and rides on a 2,845-mm wheelbase, while its cabin includes Flyme Auto infotainment, six standard airbags and a 540-degree camera system designed to help reveal obstacles around and beneath the vehicle. The result is a package aimed at competing on technology and refinement as much as electrification.

Geely’s Export Numbers Explain Why This Launch Matters

The Monjaro rollout arrives during an extraordinary expansion of Geely’s international business. Geely Auto reported more than 474,000 vehicle exports during the first half of 2026, an increase of roughly 158 per cent from a year earlier. That was already more than the company exported during all of 2025. Total group vehicle sales reached approximately 1.42 million units during the half, while first-half revenue climbed 15 per cent to a record RMB173.6 billion. International growth has become important enough that Geely raised its 2026 export target from 640,000 vehicles to 920,000, with ambitions of approaching one million overseas sales.

That scale changes the significance of an individual model launch. The Monjaro EM-i is not being exported by a small manufacturer testing a handful of markets. It is arriving from a company that says it now operates across more than 100 overseas markets and has built an international retail and service network numbering in the thousands. Geely has also been consolidating product development and overseas operations under its broader “One Geely” strategy. A common architecture and hybrid system can therefore be spread across more markets and models, helping reduce the engineering cost of adapting each vehicle. The Monjaro becomes part of that larger strategy: establish technology that works across borders, then use growing international volume to make each subsequent launch easier.

Canada Has Suddenly Become More Accessible to Geely-Owned Brands

Canada’s automotive relationship with China changed substantially in 2026. The federal government implemented an initial quota allowing as many as 49,000 eligible Chinese electric vehicles into Canada at the standard 6.1 per cent most-favoured-nation tariff rate, replacing the previous 100 per cent surtax for vehicles admitted under the new arrangement. The initial quota is scheduled to grow by 6.5 per cent annually, while the government has also outlined plans to reserve an increasing share for lower-priced vehicles. Ottawa says the policy is intended not only to expand consumer choice but also to encourage Chinese investment and joint ventures in the Canadian EV supply chain.

Geely Holding was among the first corporate groups to make tangible use of the opening. Geely-owned Lotus shipped China-built Eletre electric SUVs to Canada, with the first batch consisting of 18 vehicles and arrivals beginning in July. Lotus had already established several authorized Canadian dealerships and was planning further network expansion. That does not mean mainstream Geely dealerships automatically follow, but it gives the wider group practical Canadian experience with certification, logistics, retailing and after-sales support. For a global automaker, those capabilities are often the difficult part of entering a country. Shipping a vehicle is relatively straightforward; building a system that can sell, repair, warranty and supply parts for thousands of them is the larger commitment.

Toronto Hiring Shows the Main Geely Brand Is Doing More Than Watching

Publicly advertised positions provide another indication that Geely’s Canadian interest extends beyond Lotus. Toronto-based postings connected with Geely and Zeekr have sought people for Canadian sales leadership, after-sales operations, product planning, financial services, procurement and vehicle homologation. One sales role described responsibility for building a Canadian distribution network and managing dealer performance. A homologation position specifically involved ensuring vehicles and powertrains entering Canada meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and other regulatory requirements. An after-sales role covered parts availability, technical support, warranties and dealer service systems.

Those are the functions normally required when an automaker moves from studying a country toward preparing actual commercial operations. Even so, the evidence should not be stretched further than it goes. Geely has not publicly confirmed that the Monjaro EM-i will be sold in Canada, and there is no announced Canadian price, launch date or dealership network for this specific model. Public analysis of Geely’s Canadian strategy has instead pointed toward market testing through existing premium brands and preparation for broader Geely or Zeekr activity. That makes the Monjaro relevant to Canada as a demonstration of Geely’s increasingly export-focused product portfolio—not yet as a confirmed vehicle Canadians will be able to order.

A Large Plug-In Hybrid SUV Would Enter a Receptive but Demanding Market

The Monjaro’s basic formula is closely aligned with the kind of vehicles Canadians continue to buy. Multipurpose vehicles, a Statistics Canada category that includes many SUVs and crossovers, represented 63.2 per cent of Canadian new-vehicle registrations in 2025. Electrified demand has been less consistent, partly because incentives and product availability have changed, but the market has recently shown renewed momentum. In the first quarter of 2026, registrations of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles increased 22.9 per cent from the same period a year earlier, while battery-electric registrations rose 12.9 per cent. Overall zero-emission registrations reached 43,113 vehicles, or 10.8 per cent of new registrations during the quarter.

That does not automatically guarantee an opening for the Monjaro. Canadian buyers compare more than range and equipment; established dealership coverage, winter performance, insurance costs, resale expectations, parts supply and warranty confidence can all determine whether an unfamiliar badge gains traction. The Monjaro would also face established hybrid and plug-in-hybrid SUVs from Japanese, Korean, European and North American manufacturers. What its global rollout does establish is that Geely now has a sizeable hybrid SUV designed explicitly for export rather than a China-only model being opportunistically shipped abroad. As Geely’s Canadian infrastructure takes shape, the question is shifting from whether the company is studying Canada to which products it ultimately decides are worth bringing.
