BYD’s pickup strategy is no longer built around one oversized statement. The Chinese automaker has now shown the Mako in Brazil, a smaller plug-in hybrid pickup designed to sit below the Shark and compete in a more urban-friendly part of the truck market. The yellow prototype displayed at Interlagos combines a unibody platform, double-cab body and BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology with proportions closer to lifestyle-oriented pickups than traditional body-on-frame work trucks.
The timing is notable beyond Brazil. BYD is rapidly expanding its vehicle business outside China, while its first pickup, the Shark, is moving into additional international markets. Canada is also edging closer to a broader BYD presence. Yet despite those developments, BYD has not confirmed the Mako for Canadian sale, announced Canadian specifications or attached a Canadian launch date to the new truck.
The Mako Gives BYD a Smaller Second Pickup
At roughly 4.8 metres long with a wheelbase around 2.9 metres, the Mako occupies a distinctly different footprint from BYD’s existing Shark. The vehicle displayed in Brazil is a double-cab pickup developed from architecture closely related to BYD’s Song family of SUVs. That helps explain the familiar-looking front end: elements of the hood, lighting and cabin structure have clear connections with existing Song models, while the rear borrows some of the visual identity established by the larger Shark. BYD has not yet published a complete final dimensional specification sheet, so the measurements reported from the Brazilian presentation should still be treated as approximate.
The name also maintains BYD’s increasingly obvious marine theme. A mako is a fast species of shark, making it a natural smaller sibling to the Shark while fitting alongside names such as Dolphin and Seal in BYD’s global range. More importantly, the difference is functional rather than simply cosmetic. Instead of shrinking a conventional heavy-duty pickup formula, BYD is positioning the Mako as something closer to an SUV with an open cargo bed. That distinction could make it relevant to customers who want a truck for commuting, family use and weekend cargo without needing the dimensions or capability of a traditional midsize pickup.
Plug-In Hybrid Power Is Central to the Mako Formula
The Mako is being developed around BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology rather than a conventional diesel powertrain. The Brazilian vehicle uses a flex-fuel version of BYD’s DM-i system, combining a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated combustion engine with electric propulsion. Brazilian testing by Quatro Rodas described performance close to the locally sold Song Pro Flex, whose revised hybrid system produces around 219 horsepower. The choice of a flex-fuel engine is particularly important in Brazil because it allows the combustion side of the system to operate with the country’s widely available ethanol fuel as well as gasoline.
Some early reports have suggested larger batteries, roughly 100 kilometres of electric driving in certain configurations and eventually a more powerful all-wheel-drive model. Those figures should not yet be treated as final Mako specifications. BYD has not released a comprehensive production specification sheet covering battery capacity, certified electric range, combined output and all available drivetrains. What is confirmed by the vehicle itself is its plug-in capability. That distinction matters: unlike a conventional hybrid that relies entirely on fuel and regenerative braking, a PHEV can be charged externally, potentially allowing routine urban journeys to be completed primarily on electricity while retaining a combustion engine for longer trips.
Its Unibody Construction Changes What Kind of Truck It Is
One of the Mako’s biggest differences from a conventional pickup sits underneath the sheet metal. It uses unibody construction rather than mounting a separate body onto a ladder frame. That approach is common among crossovers and passenger vehicles and has also become established in lifestyle pickups such as the Ford Maverick and Fiat Toro. The Mako adds independent rear suspension instead of the heavy-duty leaf-spring arrangement traditionally associated with work-focused pickups. Reports from the Interlagos prototype describe reinforced springs and dampers to accommodate the additional weight carried in the cargo bed.
That engineering decision inevitably creates trade-offs. A unibody truck can deliver more car-like ride quality, cabin packaging and handling, but it is not automatically a substitute for a ladder-frame truck carrying extremely heavy loads over rough terrain. Quatro Rodas estimated the Mako prototype’s bed at around 1,000 litres and its payload near 750 kilograms, figures that put useful cargo capacity behind the lifestyle positioning. The rear suspension is also designed with road comfort in mind. Early track impressions from Interlagos described predictable behaviour resembling an SUV more than a traditional pickup—exactly the character BYD appears to be seeking with its smaller truck.
The Shark Shows How Different BYD’s Two Pickups Really Are
Putting the Mako beside the Shark makes BYD’s strategy clearer. The Shark is 5,457 millimetres long and is built around BYD’s DMO plug-in hybrid architecture for more demanding truck and off-road use. In European specification, its 1.5-litre turbocharged engine works with front and rear electric motors to produce 321 kW, or 436 PS, and 650 Nm of maximum system torque. BYD lists all-wheel drive, a 32.2-kWh Blade Battery, 90 kilometres of WLTP electric range and a braked towing capacity of 2,500 kilograms. It can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.7 seconds.
The Mako is not simply a less expensive version of that vehicle. Its smaller unibody architecture, front-biased hybrid layout in the initial configuration and more road-oriented suspension point toward a different customer. The Shark is designed to compete against traditional midsize pickups while preserving substantial towing and off-road credentials. The Mako appears intended for buyers whose truck might spend Monday morning in city traffic, carry equipment later in the week and haul bicycles, camping gear or home-improvement supplies on the weekend. BYD is effectively separating “pickup” into two products rather than asking one model to cover every use case.
Brazil Is Becoming a Development and Manufacturing Base, Not Just a Sales Market
The Mako’s importance is closely tied to BYD’s growing industrial footprint in Brazil. The company’s Camaçari complex in Bahia reached 100,000 electrified vehicles produced just nine months after the first phase of the plant was inaugurated in October 2025, according to BYD. The automaker said in July that the site had reached 5,500 direct Brazilian employees and described Camaçari as its largest industrial complex outside Asia. That scale gives BYD considerably more flexibility than simply shipping finished vehicles across the Pacific.
Brazilian automotive reports indicate the Mako is expected to enter local production at Camaçari, with launch timing currently centred on the October-to-November period. The plant has been expanding welding, painting and stamping operations as localization increases. That gives the pickup an unusually Brazilian identity for a product carrying a Chinese badge. At its Interlagos appearance, even the presentation leaned into that connection: the yellow truck was decorated with ribbons associated with Bahia. The symbolism matched the manufacturing strategy. BYD is increasingly adapting products, propulsion systems and production decisions to specific overseas markets rather than relying exclusively on vehicles engineered and assembled in China.
The Mako Is Entering One of Brazil’s Most Valuable Vehicle Battlegrounds
There is a straightforward commercial reason for the Mako’s size. Pickups have become a major part of Brazil’s light-vehicle market, ranging from compact workhorses to expensive lifestyle trucks. The Fiat Strada remained Brazil’s best-selling vehicle during the first half of 2026, recording 83,032 registrations, according to sales data reported by CNN Brasil. The larger Fiat Toro, which helped popularize the idea of a comfortable unibody pickup in Brazil, remained the country’s second-best-selling pickup and accumulated roughly 31,700 registrations through July, according to AutoIndústria.
The Mako is aimed much closer to the Toro than to the smaller Strada. It will also face an expanding field that includes the Ram Rampage, Ford Maverick and other forthcoming models, including Volkswagen’s Tukan. That creates both an opportunity and a challenge for BYD. Plug-in hybrid propulsion gives the Mako a technological distinction from many existing rivals, particularly for commuters able to charge regularly. But Brazilian pickup customers are also accustomed to comparing payload, durability, resale values and dealer support—not simply horsepower or screen size. BYD therefore needs the Mako to prove itself as a usable truck while retaining the efficiency and passenger-car refinement that make its architecture different.
The Mako Arrives as BYD Turns Pickups Into a Global Business
BYD’s first serious pickup experiment began outside its home market. The Shark made its global debut in Mexico in May 2024, with BYD explicitly describing it as a vehicle developed for international markets. It subsequently expanded into additional regions, and in July 2026 BYD gave the Shark its European premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The company said sales would begin in the United Kingdom before expanding into selected European markets during the second half of the year. The Mako now widens that strategy by giving BYD a second pickup positioned in a substantially different size and price class.
The broader corporate numbers help explain why BYD can pursue multiple niches simultaneously. The company says it sold 4.6 million new-energy vehicles worldwide in 2025, with more than one million going to customers outside China. Sales exceeded 1.8 million vehicles during the first six months of 2026, and BYD produced its 17-millionth new-energy vehicle in July. For a company operating at that scale, pickups no longer need to be a single experimental product. The Shark can address larger global truck markets while vehicles such as the Mako can be tailored around regional demand, manufacturing conditions and fuel infrastructure.
Canada Is Getting Closer to BYD, but the Mako Remains Unconfirmed
Canadian interest is understandable because BYD’s presence in the country has become considerably more tangible. In August, BYD added Canada to its global website with a “Coming Soon” message. The Canadian page still does not list vehicles, prices, retail locations, an ordering function or a sales-launch date. Reuters reported in June that BYD was working toward a Canadian dealer network and had begun compliance procedures for two passenger cars. Those steps support the view that a market entry is being prepared, but they do not identify the Mako—or even the Shark—as a confirmed Canadian model.
Canada’s policy environment has changed as well. Ottawa implemented an annual quota of 49,000 EVs originating in China at the 6.1% most-favoured-nation tariff rate beginning March 1, 2026, replacing the previous 100% surtax for eligible imports within the quota. That policy creates a clearer path for Chinese automakers, but it is not a Mako approval. The new pickup is being tied increasingly closely to Brazilian production, and any Canadian version would still require a commercial decision by BYD, applicable certification and a sales-and-service strategy. For now, the most accurate conclusion is straightforward: BYD is moving toward Canada, and its global pickup range is growing, but the Mako has not been confirmed for Canadian showrooms.
