For years, getting Spotify onto a car’s dashboard has usually meant bringing a smartphone along for the ride. Audi is now taking a different route. Beginning October 21, 2026, select new Audi models can run Spotify’s first fully native automotive app directly through their infotainment systems, without tethering a phone for everyday playback.

Audi is the first automaker to launch Spotify’s new native experience, which is built around Android Automotive OS and goes well beyond simply putting familiar playback buttons on a dashboard. The software can use Audi’s displays, audio system and voice controls directly, while features change depending on whether the vehicle is moving or parked. It is a relatively small software update with much bigger implications for the long-running battle over who controls the digital experience inside modern cars.

Spotify Finally Lives in the Car Instead of on the Phone

The most important part of Audi’s announcement is what disappears from the normal listening routine. Once Spotify has been installed through the Audi Application Store and the account is signed in, music and other supported content can play through the vehicle without a Bluetooth connection, USB cable or smartphone projection session. Spotify says playback can be ready when the vehicle starts, making the car itself the device running the service rather than simply acting as a display and speaker system for a phone.

That distinction makes Audi the first manufacturer to launch what Spotify calls its fully native automotive experience. The companies worked with Volkswagen Group software company CARIAD to integrate the app with Android Automotive OS. The result has access to Audi’s infotainment hardware, screens and voice controls instead of functioning as a remote window into a mobile application. For someone accustomed to waiting for a phone and car to establish a wireless connection every morning, the practical difference could be noticeable.

“Native” Means Something Very Different From Android Auto

Android Auto and Android Automotive OS sound almost interchangeable, but technically they serve very different roles. Google describes Android Auto as a phone-powered experience projected onto a compatible vehicle display. Android Automotive OS, by contrast, is an operating system installed directly on the vehicle’s infotainment hardware. Applications designed for it can therefore operate on the car even when the driver’s smartphone is not connected.

Spotify had already appeared in Android Automotive environments, but its earlier implementation relied more heavily on standardized interface templates. According to Audi, the new version gives Spotify a broader interface and more of its own familiar navigation. Spotify automotive executive Jonathan Tarlton described the difference to The Verge as the company effectively controlling the pixels itself rather than fitting its service into a predefined template. That greater control makes room for Spotify-specific menus, personalized content, video, lyrics, DJ functionality and multi-display features that would be harder to reproduce through a more restricted generic interface.

The Phone Is Still Useful for Setup — Just Not for Playback

There is an important qualification to the promise of a phone-free Spotify experience. A smartphone or another personal device can still be used during the initial account-sign-in process. After installing or updating Spotify from the Audi Application Store, the vehicle displays a code that can be paired by scanning a QR code or entering the displayed code through Spotify’s pairing website. Once authentication is complete, however, Spotify says the phone does not have to remain paired or tethered for playback.

From that point, the vehicle can pick up listening through the signed-in Spotify account, with access to supported voice controls and other infotainment functions. The experience is available to both Spotify Free and Premium customers rather than being restricted solely to paying subscribers, although the features available through Spotify still depend on the listener’s account and market. Spotify also notes that an Audi connect package may be required. In practical terms, the phone becomes an account key rather than the computer powering every trip.

The Screen Changes Its Behaviour Once the Audi Starts Moving

Putting a richer entertainment app into a dashboard immediately raises an obvious question: what happens to features such as videos and lyrics while someone is driving? Audi and Spotify have built driving-state restrictions into the app. When the vehicle is moving, real-time lyrics and video disappear from the centre MMI display. Sign-in and settings functions are also unavailable, and related controls are removed from the main Now Playing interface. Voice interaction and simplified navigation remain available.

That approach follows a broader principle in automotive-interface design: a screen that works well while parked is not necessarily appropriate at highway speed. Google’s Android for Cars guidance emphasizes reducing information, simplifying tasks and minimizing driver input while a vehicle is moving. U.S. NHTSA guidance has similarly treated entertainment and information activities as secondary driving tasks and has recommended limiting particularly distracting visual-manual functions. When the Audi is parked, including during an EV charging stop, Spotify can unlock video podcasts, music videos, lyrics and expanded browsing on the centre screen.

Passengers Get a Much Richer Spotify Experience

The restrictions do not necessarily mean everyone in the cabin loses Spotify’s visual features whenever the car begins moving. Audi vehicles equipped with a dedicated front-passenger display can continue offering supported passenger functions, including browsing, lyrics and video, while the centre display remains restricted for the driver. Modern Audi models already use passenger-screen technology designed to prevent distracting visual material from being easily viewed from the driver’s position.

Spotify Jam adds another layer. Instead of one person controlling the entire road-trip playlist, passengers can scan an on-screen QR code and join a shared listening session from their own devices. Participants can then contribute songs to the common queue. Jam itself is not new — Spotify has offered collaborative sessions for several years and added Jam functionality to Android Auto in 2025 — but deeper integration into Audi’s native app makes the feature more central to the cabin experience. It turns Spotify from something controlled by one connected phone into something multiple occupants can actively shape.

Five Audi Model Lines Get the New Spotify Experience First

The initial rollout is focused on Audi’s newer Premium Platform Electric and Premium Platform Combustion vehicles. At launch, Spotify’s native app is available in the electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron as well as the A5, Q5 and A6, generally covering supported vehicles from the 2026 model year onward. Audi says the Q7 and Q9 will also support the application beginning with their respective market launches.

The rollout is planned for 47 Audi markets across Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia, although Spotify cautions that actual availability varies by vehicle and market. The application itself can be downloaded from the Audi Application Store without a separate download charge, but a Spotify account is required and subscription costs still depend on the chosen plan and region. Audi’s broader Application Store can also require compatible equipment, an active data connection and a myAudi account. That means “built in” should not be mistaken for universally available on every Audi already on the road.

Cars Have Become Far Too Important for Spotify to Ignore

Spotify has a powerful reason to make the automotive experience more than an extension of its smartphone app: an enormous amount of listening already happens behind the wheel. During its third-quarter 2025 earnings discussion, the company said approximately 245 million people were listening to Spotify in cars at that point. That represented about 34% of monthly active users and roughly 15% of total consumption hours. The vehicle, in other words, is already one of Spotify’s major listening environments.

Spotify has continued growing since then. The company reported 777 million monthly active users and 300 million Premium subscribers for the second quarter of 2026, with active users up 12% year over year. At that scale, even relatively small reductions in friction can affect hundreds of millions of listening sessions. Eliminating the recurring process of connecting a phone, launching projection software and waiting for interfaces to load gives Spotify a chance to become as immediate in the car as traditional FM radio once was: start the vehicle, and the audio environment is already there.

Audi Has Been Building Toward This for Years

The Spotify launch also fits a much broader Audi strategy. The automaker began introducing its integrated Application Store in selected vehicles in 2023, working with CARIAD to make third-party software installable directly into the MMI system. Audi’s current app ecosystem includes categories ranging from music and video to gaming, navigation, parking, charging, productivity, weather and news. Depending on the market, services have included Spotify, YouTube, Disney+, DAZN and other recognizable digital brands.

Newer Audi electrical architectures have pushed the concept further by adopting Android Automotive OS as the foundation for infotainment. The idea resembles the evolution of smartphones: instead of treating the factory interface as something essentially frozen when the vehicle leaves the showroom, the automaker can continually add applications, services and software features. Spotify’s new implementation demonstrates why that matters. Installing Spotify was already possible in some Audis, but the deeper native version can now take greater advantage of the vehicle’s displays and operating state rather than behaving like an isolated third-party media source.

CarPlay and Android Auto Are Not Going Away — At Least Not Yet

A native Spotify application naturally raises questions about Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, particularly as some automakers have debated how much control smartphone projection should have inside the vehicle. Spotify, however, is not presenting its Audi app as an immediate replacement. Tarlton told The Verge that Spotify remains heavily invested in phone projection and wants listeners to have a choice about how they access the service. Audi has also continued offering smartphone integration alongside its growing native app ecosystem.

The more significant development may be that phone projection now has a stronger competitor. Spotify says it intends to expand the new native experience to additional global automotive partners over the coming year. Its focus on Android-based automotive systems could allow essentially the same application foundation to appear across multiple manufacturers rather than requiring entirely separate software for every brand. If that strategy works, drivers may increasingly face two equally capable choices: bring the phone’s digital environment onto the dashboard, or simply let the car run the apps itself.
