Kia is preparing to move deeper into the electric commercial-vehicle market, revealing the first teaser images of its larger PV7 just as the smaller PV5 gets ready for Canadian showrooms. The PV7 is designed to offer more space and capability than the PV5 and is scheduled for its global debut at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover, Germany, on September 14, 2026.
For Canada, however, the immediate story is the PV5 Cargo. Kia has priced the 2027 model from $46,995 before applicable fees, with deliveries expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. Together, the two vans show that Kia’s electric ambitions are expanding beyond conventional passenger vehicles and into the commercial fleets that keep businesses moving.
The PV7 Moves Kia Into a Bigger Class
Kia has not fully unveiled the PV7 yet, but its August 31 teaser confirms a significant step up from the PV5. The company describes the new model as its second dedicated, fully electric Platform Beyond Vehicle, or PBV, and says it will provide increased space and capability compared with the smaller van. Teaser images show a tall, one-box body with substantial proportions and the vertical lighting themes that are becoming familiar across Kia’s PBV family.
The important detail is what Kia has not disclosed. Battery capacity, driving range, dimensions, payload, power output and pricing remain unannounced ahead of the September 14 world premiere. Kia’s existing corporate roadmap calls for the PV7 to launch in 2027, followed by the still-larger PV9 in 2029. That means the teaser is less about a vehicle ready for dealerships tomorrow and more about showing fleet operators where Kia intends to take its commercial EV business next.
Bigger Than the PV5 Without Simply Becoming a Traditional Van
The PV7’s positioning matters because Kia is trying to build a family of commercial vehicles rather than one electric van in several lengths. The company says the PV7 will broaden its offering within the light-commercial-vehicle market and support both business and lifestyle applications. Its square, upright form is designed to maximize usable space, while contrasting black hood and pillar treatments help separate the body visually from a conventional cargo van.
Kia has not released enough technical information to establish exactly where the PV7 will sit against familiar North American vans such as the Ford Transit or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. It has only confirmed that the model provides more room and capability than the PV5. That distinction is worth preserving until September’s formal unveiling. What is clear is that Kia sees room above its compact electric cargo vehicle for businesses that need substantially more carrying capacity without abandoning battery-electric propulsion.
A Dedicated Electric Platform Sits Under the Strategy
Both vans are part of a broader engineering strategy built around Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP.S architecture. Unlike an electric van created by replacing the engine and fuel tank of an existing combustion model, E-GMP.S was developed specifically for PBVs. The skateboard-style platform places major electrical components low in the vehicle and is designed around a flat interior floor, giving engineers more freedom to package cargo or passenger space above it.
The architecture also uses what Hyundai Motor Group calls a Flexible Body System. Roofs, door sections, rear overhangs and other components can be configured in different combinations rather than requiring an entirely separate vehicle structure for every application. Kia said during its PV5 technical presentation that this approach could support as many as 16 PV5 variants. For commercial customers, that flexibility could eventually mean refrigerated trucks, campers, passenger shuttles or specialized work vehicles sharing substantial underlying hardware.
Canada Gets Its First Taste With the PV5 Cargo
Canadian businesses will encounter Kia’s PBV strategy through the 2027 PV5 Cargo first. Kia Canada says the electric van is expected to reach the market during the fourth quarter of 2026, giving the company an entry into a commercial segment that is very different from the EV6, EV9 and other passenger-focused electric models already associated with the Kia badge.
The Canadian PV5 is a two-seat cargo vehicle rather than the multi-row passenger versions offered in some overseas markets. Behind the driver and front passenger is a large commercial load area intended for deliveries, trades and other fleet duties. That distinction could make the PV5 particularly interesting to small contractors, service businesses and urban delivery operations. Rather than trying to be a family minivan that can occasionally carry equipment, its Canadian configuration is designed around work from the beginning.
The $46,995 Price Is Central to the Canadian Launch
Kia has set the PV5 Basic’s Canadian MSRP at $46,995, while the better-equipped Plus begins at $49,095. Kia lists all-in prices of $49,744 and $51,844 respectively after specified fees and levies. Just as importantly, Transport Canada’s current Electric Vehicle Affordability Program list includes both PV5 trims as eligible battery-electric vehicles.
For qualifying purchases in 2026, the federal EVAP can provide an incentive of up to $5,000 for an eligible battery-electric vehicle. Kia has clearly structured the PV5’s pricing with that program in mind. Commercial buyers still have to consider taxes, financing, charging installation, insurance and upfitting when calculating total cost, but the incentive gives the PV5 a potentially meaningful starting advantage. For a business purchasing several vans rather than a single vehicle, even relatively modest per-unit savings can become significant across an entire fleet.
A 71.2-kWh Battery Delivers an Estimated 360 Kilometres
The Canadian PV5 will use a 71.2-kWh battery, with Kia estimating approximately 360 kilometres of combined driving range. That figure may not turn the van into a long-distance highway hauler, but it puts considerable territory within reach for delivery routes, technicians and businesses whose vehicles return to a depot or home base each night.
Kia also says the PV5 can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 30 minutes under appropriate DC fast-charging conditions. A North American Charging Standard, or NACS, connector comes standard, an increasingly important feature as manufacturers consolidate around the connector used by Tesla’s extensive charging network. Real-world range will naturally vary with temperature, payload, speed and accessory use. Those variables matter particularly in Canada, where winter heating and extreme cold can change an electric commercial vehicle’s daily energy requirements substantially.
Cargo Capacity Shows Why This Is More Than an Electric Crossover
For businesses, the PV5’s more revealing specifications may be inside the cargo area. Kia estimates total cargo volume at 5,016 litres and maximum payload at 1,631 pounds. The wheelbase measures 2,995 millimetres, while the Canadian configuration seats two people. Those figures place the emphasis squarely on carrying equipment and merchandise rather than maximizing passenger capacity.
The low-floor benefits of a dedicated EV architecture can also matter during an ordinary workday. A courier, technician or contractor may step into and out of a vehicle dozens of times, making loading height and access more important than dramatic acceleration figures. Kia designed E-GMP.S partly around that kind of repeated commercial use. Although fleet operators will eventually need independent real-world data on durability and operating costs, the specifications show that Kia has treated load space as a core engineering requirement rather than simply clearing out the rear seats of a passenger vehicle.
The Plus Trim Adds Features Aimed at Daily Work
The more expensive PV5 Plus costs $49,095 before applicable fees and adds technology that could prove useful in cramped loading zones and urban environments. Kia lists a Surround View Monitor and Blind Spot View Monitor among its equipment, features intended to make maneuvering a relatively large, window-limited cargo vehicle easier. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are also included, an unglamorous but practical consideration for vehicles operating through Canadian winters.
Another notable feature is vehicle-to-load capability inside and outside the van. V2L allows the traction battery to supply electricity to compatible external equipment, potentially giving tradespeople a mobile power source for tools, computers or other devices. It does not replace a purpose-designed generator for every job, and available output and compatibility still matter. Yet the ability to draw power from the vehicle illustrates the wider philosophy behind Kia’s PBV program: the van is meant to function as part of a workplace, not merely transportation between workplaces.
Kia Has Much Bigger Commercial-EV Targets
The PV5 and PV7 are not side projects tucked into Kia’s passenger-car business. At its 2026 CEO Investor Day, the automaker said it expects to sell about 54,000 PV5s globally this year and is targeting 232,000 annual PBV sales by 2030. Its current roadmap calls for the PV7 in 2027 and PV9 in 2029, eventually supporting more than 40 body types across the broader PBV family.
Production strategy reflects that commitment. Kia has designated its Hwaseong EVO Plant in South Korea as a dedicated PBV manufacturing hub and has been developing a conversion ecosystem for specialized bodies. Europe and South Korea are identified as core markets, meaning Canada is entering a program with much broader global ambitions behind it. The commercial-vehicle market rewards reliability and operating economics more than novelty, however, so Kia’s long-term success will depend on whether those ambitious modular concepts translate into dependable vans that fleets can keep working every day.
The Biggest PV7 Questions Are Still Unanswered
The PV7 teaser provides a clear sense of direction but leaves many questions that matter to Canadian buyers. Kia has not announced the battery capacity, range, charging speed, payload, cargo volume or pricing. It has also made no Canadian-market announcement for the PV7. A global launch planned for 2027 does not automatically mean the larger van will come to Canada, particularly when commercial vehicle specifications and demand vary significantly between regions.
More answers should arrive when the PV7 makes its world premiere at IAA Transportation on September 14. Until then, the PV5 is the more concrete Canadian story: a purpose-built electric cargo van starting at $46,995, with approximately 360 kilometres of estimated range and a Q4 2026 arrival window. The PV7 shows that Kia intends to go considerably further. Whether Canadian fleets eventually get both vans will determine how significant Kia’s PBV push becomes on this side of the Atlantic.
