Hyundai’s childhood-cancer initiative is putting another $350,000 behind care and research in British Columbia, pairing a corporate donation with a deeply personal reminder of what pediatric cancer treatment means for families. Hyundai Hope on Wheels announced the funding during a White Rock event involving BC Children’s Hospital patients, families and Chicago Blackhawks star Connor Bedard. The money includes $100,000 for BC Children’s Hospital and $250,000 supporting cancer research through the C17 Council partnership. Nationally, Hyundai has committed more than $4.1 million to pediatric cancer programs in 2026. Importantly, that figure represents this year’s commitment rather than the program’s lifetime Canadian total; Hyundai had already pledged more than $4 million during its inaugural Canadian year in 2025.
B.C.’s $350,000 Funding Package Has Two Different Jobs
Hyundai Hope on Wheels announced the B.C. funding on August 26 during a Handprint Ceremony hosted at Murray Hyundai White Rock. The $350,000 total is being delivered through two channels. Hyundai Canada and its dealer network are providing $100,000 to BC Children’s Hospital, while another $250,000 is being directed through Hyundai’s partnership with the C17 Council to support pediatric cancer research led in British Columbia. The structure matters because it connects the immediate needs of a major children’s hospital with a longer-term effort to develop better treatments. Hyundai says its broader national program supports pediatric cancer care, research and family programs, rather than concentrating all of its charitable spending in one area.
It is also not Hyundai’s first significant childhood-cancer contribution in the province. In June 2025, during the program’s first Canadian year, Hyundai Hope on Wheels provided $250,000 to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. At the time, the foundation highlighted the hospital’s role in treating young cancer patients from across British Columbia and the Yukon. The 2026 funding expands that relationship while placing a larger share of the latest B.C. commitment directly into research. That distinction illustrates how pediatric cancer philanthropy can work on two timelines: helping hospitals care for children today while financing scientists trying to change what treatment looks like for the next generation.
Twin Brothers Put a Human Face on the Numbers
Among the families represented at the event were Weston and Bennett Openshaw, identical twin brothers whose experience with leukemia has become closely associated with BC Children’s Hospital. Weston was two years old when he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2022. Roughly four months later, Bennett received the same diagnosis. Their case was particularly unusual because the hospital was caring for twins with cancer simultaneously, creating a treatment journey that placed extraordinary demands on their parents and medical team. Earlier accounts of the family’s experience described years of chemotherapy, blood tests, hospital visits and the constant uncertainty that follows a childhood cancer diagnosis.
The brothers are now seven and were described by Hyundai as cancer-free patient ambassadors at the 2026 event. Their mother, Alisha Openshaw, has spoken publicly about both the relief of reaching that point and the difficult reality that other families they met during treatment did not get the same outcome. The twins’ story gives context to statistics that can otherwise feel abstract. Leukemias have historically accounted for roughly one-third of childhood cancer diagnoses in Canadian children under 15. The Openshaw family’s experience also demonstrates why survivorship involves more than reaching the end of chemotherapy. Treatment can reshape school life, family routines, emotional health and even ordinary childhood activities for years, making supportive care an important part of pediatric oncology alongside medicine itself.
A $250,000 Research Grant Targets the Hard Problem of Cancer Spread
The research side of Hyundai’s B.C. commitment is focused on the work of Dr. Poul Sorensen, a distinguished scientist at the BC Cancer Research Institute and professor of pathology at the University of British Columbia. Sorensen’s laboratory has spent years studying aggressive childhood cancers, particularly sarcomas and the biological mechanisms that allow tumour cells to survive stressful conditions and spread through the body. Hyundai says the new $250,000 award will support research examining a protein involved in metastasis in osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma, two serious bone cancers affecting children and young adults.
The goal is not simply to identify another molecular feature of cancer. Sorensen’s team plans to investigate whether targeting the protein with an existing clinically validated compound could make tumour cells more vulnerable to lower doses of chemotherapy, potentially laying groundwork for clinical testing. The need is significant. Published research involving Sorensen has noted that localized osteosarcoma can have cure rates approaching 70%, while outcomes deteriorate sharply once the disease has metastasized. A 2020 review reported five-year survival of around 20% for metastatic osteosarcoma, while other research programs have cited survival of roughly 15% to 20% after metastatic Ewing sarcoma. Recent 2026 laboratory work from Sorensen’s group has also continued examining ways to disrupt the biological defenses that allow metastatic osteosarcoma cells to survive.
C17 Turns One Donation Into Part of a National Research Network
The C17 Council partnership gives the B.C. grant a wider Canadian connection. C17 represents 16 academic pediatric hematology and oncology programs operating across 17 centres in Canada, creating a structure through which specialists can collaborate on research, clinical trials and treatment standards. Its research network runs peer-reviewed funding competitions covering areas such as clinical trials, translational science, registries, quality of life and health-services research. That national approach is particularly valuable in childhood cancer because individual cancers can be rare, leaving any single hospital with relatively small patient populations for research.
In 2026, Hyundai Hope on Wheels and C17 established a $1-million pediatric cancer research competition consisting of four grants worth $250,000 each, paid over two years. The program requires projects to focus on improving treatment outcomes, treatment options or quality of life for children and adolescents with cancer. Hyundai and C17 also launched a separate clinical-trials infrastructure competition, offering grants of up to $40,000 for projects intended to strengthen pediatric oncology trial capacity in Canada. These initiatives provide an important bridge between charitable fundraising and the less visible infrastructure required to test new therapies. A promising laboratory discovery can take years to reach patients; coordinated funding, peer review and access to multiple cancer centres can help move that process forward.
Hyundai’s Canadian Program Is Now in Its Second Year
Hyundai Hope on Wheels has existed in the United States since 1998, but its Canadian operation is much newer. Hyundai Auto Canada formally launched the program in February 2025 with support from its nationwide dealership network. Beginning January 1 of that year, a portion of every new Hyundai vehicle sale in Canada was directed toward the initiative. Hyundai initially committed more than $4 million during the first Canadian year, including major $1-million grants to SickKids Foundation in Toronto and the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation in Montreal, along with donations to pediatric cancer programs elsewhere in the country.
For 2026, Hyundai says the commitment has grown to more than $4.1 million, supported by Hyundai Auto Canada and more than 225 dealerships. The program’s current materials say its funding is intended to reach pediatric oncology centres across Canada while also supporting a $1-million national research fund administered through C17. That makes the headline figure worth distinguishing from a cumulative total. The Canadian initiative committed more than $4 million in 2025 and another $4.1-million-plus commitment for 2026, meaning the program’s scale over its first two years is substantially larger than the latest annual figure alone suggests. Linking donations to vehicle sales also gives the initiative an ongoing funding mechanism rather than relying exclusively on occasional fundraising events.
Childhood Cancer Survival Has Improved, but the Remaining Gap Is Difficult
The need behind that spending remains significant even though childhood cancer outcomes have improved dramatically over time. BC Children’s Hospital Foundation estimates that approximately 130 children in British Columbia are diagnosed with cancer each year. Nationally, the Public Health Agency of Canada says about 1,000 children under age 15 receive a cancer diagnosis annually. More than 86% now survive at least five years after diagnosis, reflecting decades of gains from improved biological understanding, specialized treatment and clinical research. Childhood cancer nevertheless remains one of the most consequential disease threats facing Canadian children.
Those overall survival numbers also conceal enormous differences between diagnoses. A Statistics Canada analysis of children diagnosed from 2013 through 2017 found five-year survival above 90% for many cancer groups, while outcomes were considerably poorer for others. In that analysis, survival was estimated at 42% for certain gliomas and about 65% for both acute myeloid leukemia and osteosarcoma. Modern federal surveillance now reports a higher overall national survival rate, but the central problem remains: progress has not been distributed equally across every cancer. Survivors can also face long-term effects from treatment, making research into less toxic and more targeted therapies important even for cancers where survival is already relatively high.
Bedard and the Handprint Ceremony Bring Visibility to a Clinical Fight
Connor Bedard’s appearance gave the White Rock event an attention-grabbing connection to hockey, but the tradition at the centre of Hyundai Hope on Wheels is built around the young patients themselves. During Handprint Ceremonies, children affected by cancer place painted handprints on a Hyundai vehicle. The cars then become travelling symbols of the program as events move between communities. Bedard, a Chicago Blackhawks star and Hyundai Canada brand ambassador, joined children and families at the B.C. ceremony, continuing an association with the initiative that also saw him participate in Hyundai’s 2025 BC Children’s Hospital event.
The visibility has a practical purpose when paired with funding. Childhood cancers collectively affect far fewer people than major adult cancers, and rare pediatric diagnoses can struggle for research attention because patient populations are comparatively small. Hyundai’s current model combines highly public events with hospital donations, national research competitions and clinical-trial support. The 2026 cross-country tour is scheduled to continue in London, Ontario, with another Handprint Ceremony on September 3. Ultimately, however, the larger test will occur far from dealership events: in laboratories, oncology units and clinical trials where researchers determine whether funded discoveries can produce safer treatments, fewer relapses and better survival. For families such as the Openshaws, that is the outcome behind every fundraising total.
