The GMC Sierra EV is getting a darker edge for 2027. New model-year order information shows GMC adding a Denali Dark Package, a factory-installed appearance group aimed at buyers who want the luxury-oriented Denali without its usual bright exterior accents. The package is listed under RPO code WJU and is scheduled for late availability, with blacked-out trim and dark-finished wheels doing most of the visual work. It arrives during a broader update that also brings a native NACS charging port, new paint choices, expanded camera functionality and optional performance brakes. Importantly, the Dark Package does not create a separate high-output Sierra EV. Its role is more focused: change the character of the Denali’s exterior while leaving the truck’s underlying electric capability intact.
A Darker Denali Arrives for 2027
GMC has spent years making Denali shorthand for the polished end of its truck range, so a factory blackout treatment is a noticeable shift in tone. The 2027 Sierra EV Denali Dark Package is identified by RPO code WJU and is listed as a late-availability option. Rather than replacing Denali’s luxury mission, it changes the visual language around it. Bright exterior details give way to darker finishes, creating a more restrained look on a pickup that already has a large, upright front end and substantial road presence. Because the package is factory-installed, buyers can order the darker theme as part of the vehicle configuration instead of piecing together separate badges, wheels and trim after delivery.
That distinction matters because appearance packages often sit somewhere between personalization and trim-level strategy. GMC is not using the Dark Package to create another Sierra EV grade above Denali, nor does the available order information associate it with a new motor or battery. The 2027 lineup continues with Elevation, AT4 and Denali, while battery choice determines much of the truck’s output and charging capability. In practical terms, the Dark Package lets a Denali buyer change the visual personality without abandoning Denali equipment. It is a relatively simple move, but one that gives GMC another way to differentiate a premium electric pickup whose basic shape and core engineering carry into the new model year.
The Blackout Treatment Goes Beyond Badges
The package goes further than simply swapping a few emblems. Order information shows black treatments for the assist steps, grille surround and exterior nameplates. Those pieces are prominent on a Denali because brightwork traditionally helps signal the trim’s premium status. Turning them dark changes the way the truck reads from a distance: less jewelry, more monochrome mass. The look should be particularly noticeable around the Sierra EV’s broad nose, where the grille surround and badges sit against a largely closed-off EV front fascia. GMC has not yet released official package photography, so the final visual effect should not be inferred beyond the components specifically listed in the order material.
Wheel treatment depends on how the Denali is configured. On a Denali Extended Range, the Dark Package brings 22-inch Painted Deep Space wheels together with black lug nuts and a wheel-lock kit. Adding the Denali Reserve Package moves the truck to new 24-inch six-split-spoke High Gloss Black wheels. The Denali Max Range already includes Reserve equipment, so those 24-inch wheels are part of the Dark Package configuration from the outset. GMC also lists a separate 24-inch Bright PVD wheel for Denali Reserve models, but that wheel is not compatible with the Dark Package. The result is a package whose appearance changes slightly depending on battery and equipment choices rather than one identical wheel-and-trim combination.
Electric Capability Remains the Real Muscle
The darkened trim does not reduce the Sierra EV Denali to a styling exercise. The 2027 order information lists the Denali Extended Range at up to 645 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, while the Denali Max Range reaches up to 760 horsepower with the same 785 lb-ft torque figure. DC fast-charging capability is listed at up to 300 kW for Extended Range and 350 kW for Max Range. GMC’s current Sierra EV Denali specifications also show a maximum available towing figure of 12,500 pounds, illustrating how far the model sits from the traditional idea of an electric pickup as a light-duty lifestyle vehicle.
Range requires a little more care because model-year estimates and certification can move. GMC currently advertises up to 478 miles of GM-estimated range for the 2026 Sierra EV Denali with the available Max Range battery. The 2027 order information carries forward the Standard, Extended and Max Range battery structure and the same top-end Denali output and charging rates, but a final 2027 range figure should be treated as pending until GMC and the EPA publish model-year-specific numbers. That distinction is important for shoppers comparing vehicles months before delivery. The Dark Package itself does not change the battery specification, so its main tradeoffs are expected to center on price, wheel choice and appearance rather than a newly advertised performance or range tier.
Native NACS Is the Bigger Everyday Change
The most consequential everyday change for the 2027 Sierra EV may be hidden behind the charging door. Order information says the truck switches from a CCS1 inlet to a native NACS connection using the SAE J3400-style connector. Earlier GM electric vehicles could already access compatible Tesla Superchargers through a GM-approved NACS DC adapter, but a native inlet removes that adapter from many fast-charging stops. GMC’s support material says NACS-native GM vehicles can use compatible NACS networks through the myGMC ecosystem, while owners may need a CCS1 DC adapter or J1772 AC adapter when connecting to older non-NACS equipment. For many drivers, that reverses the adapter routine they have become accustomed to with earlier Sierra EVs.
That change matters more than the Dark Package on a long road trip. The 2027 order guide information lists maximum DC charging rates of 220 kW for Standard Range, 300 kW for Extended Range and 350 kW for Max Range, so the connector switch does not itself raise the truck’s peak charging figures. Instead, it is about convenience and network compatibility. GM opened access to thousands of compatible Tesla Supercharger locations for its customers beginning in 2024, initially through adapters. A factory NACS inlet makes the physical connection simpler at those sites while shifting the adapter burden to legacy CCS1 and J1772 stations. For owners who regularly travel between cities, that everyday friction can matter more than a cosmetic option.
Cameras and Mirrors Become More Useful
The 2027 updates also make more use of the Sierra EV’s cameras. Order information lists a new interior camera as standard on every trim, enabling Cabin Glance and interior security-recording functions. HD Surround Vision adds Surround Vision Recorder and security-recording capability, expanding the camera system beyond its familiar parking and maneuvering role. The same model-year material also says upgraded outside mirrors become standard across the lineup, bringing heating, power adjustment, power folding and driver-side auto-dimming. These are not dramatic headline changes, but they address the kind of day-to-day interactions that owners notice after the first week rather than during the first walkaround.
For a full-size electric pickup, camera coverage is especially useful because physical scale can make parking garages, tight driveways and crowded lots less forgiving. GMC’s current Sierra EV material advertises up to 14 available camera views, while the new recording functions add a security and documentation dimension to that existing visibility hardware. The Dark Package does not alter those systems, but its arrival in the same model year illustrates GMC’s two-track approach: make the truck look more distinctive while also refining how it is used. A buyer drawn in by black trim may ultimately spend far more time appreciating power-folding mirrors, recorded camera views or Cabin Glance than looking at the grille surround.
Brembo Brakes Are a Separate Upgrade
GMC is also giving 2027 Sierra EV buyers an optional hardware upgrade that is separate from the Denali Dark Package. A dealer-installed Front and Rear Performance Brake Kit, RPO 5JL, is listed for Elevation and Denali models. It uses red Brembo six-piston front calipers, larger front pads and rotors, GMC branding on the front calipers and color-matched red rear calipers. The visual combination is easy to imagine on a blacked-out Denali, but the brake kit is not listed as part of WJU and should be treated as an independent option. Pricing for the brake kit had not been announced in the latest reporting.
The extra braking hardware is notable because Sierra EVs are heavy vehicles. Independent reporting on the 2027 brake option places curb weights across the lineup at roughly 7,573 to 8,867 pounds, depending on configuration and battery. Large battery packs are a major reason modern electric pickups can approach the mass of commercial-duty vehicles, making heat management and repeated braking performance important engineering considerations even when regenerative braking handles much of routine deceleration. Brembo has also developed heavy-vehicle six-piston systems specifically with large trucks and electric SUVs in mind. Buyers should still view the GMC kit on its stated merits rather than assume it transforms the truck into a performance model; the Denali Dark Package remains strictly an appearance play.
More Colors Arrive, but Pricing Is Still Missing
Color choice will determine how subtle or dramatic the Dark Package looks. The 2027 Sierra EV palette adds Azurite Blue Metallic, Dark Ridge Metallic, Deep Void Matte and Marine Teal, while several 2026 colors leave the order book. Not every new shade is available on Denali: Marine Teal is excluded, while Deep Void Matte is limited to AT4 and Denali. Azurite Blue Metallic and Dark Ridge Metallic are listed across all trims, and Onyx Black carries over. That gives Denali Dark buyers the choice of an almost fully monochrome treatment or a higher-contrast body color with black exterior details. The new paints are also listed for late availability in the order information.
There are still important blanks. Pricing and official images for the Denali Dark Package were not available in the latest reporting, so it is too early to judge value against a regular Denali or dealer-installed blackout accessories. Production of the 2027 Sierra EV is reported to begin in October, but WJU is specifically flagged for late availability, meaning early 2027 trucks may arrive without it. The package also lands in a complicated EV market: GM said its overall U.S. second-quarter 2026 sales fell 4.2 percent partly because of a smaller EV market, even as GMC recorded its best-ever second-quarter Sierra sales overall. For GMC, a factory dark theme is a relatively low-complexity way to keep its premium electric pickup fresh while buyers weigh price, charging access and capability.
