General Motors appears ready to make one of its most consequential Silverado HD and Sierra HD changes beneath the sheet metal. Fresh reporting indicates the 2027 heavy-duty pickups are preparing to receive an updated 6.6-liter gasoline V8 and a new Duramax diesel, even though the trucks themselves are expected to remain on their existing generation.
The timing is significant. Production of the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD is reportedly scheduled to begin in November 2026, while GM’s Flint Assembly plant remains at the centre of the company’s highly valuable heavy-duty truck business. GM has not formally released specifications for the reported engines, leaving horsepower, torque and several technical details unanswered. What is emerging, however, points to a powertrain-focused update arriving well before the trucks’ eventual full redesign.
A Powertrain Refresh Arrives Before a Full Redesign
The most important development concerns two reported engine codes: L8S for the gasoline powerplant and L6P for the next Duramax. According to GM Authority, both are expected to appear in the 2027 Silverado HD and Sierra HD while the pickups remain on their current basic generation. That makes the change more substantial mechanically than the familiar model-year adjustments involving paint colours or equipment packages.
The strategy gives GM an opportunity to improve its workhorse trucks without waiting for an entirely new platform. GM Authority has separately reported that the next-generation HD trucks are targeted for the 2029 model year, although GM has not officially confirmed that schedule. For an owner hauling machinery, livestock or a large fifth-wheel trailer, changes under the hood can matter considerably more than a new grille. In this part of the market, torque delivery, durability and towing performance often shape buying decisions for years.
The New L8S Keeps the 6.6-Liter Gas Formula
The reported gasoline engine carries the L8S code and is described as an updated version of GM’s existing L8T. Importantly, the new naturally aspirated engine is expected to retain 6.6 litres of displacement. That suggests evolution rather than abandonment of the large-displacement V8 formula GM currently uses for customers who want heavy-duty capability without moving into diesel ownership.
Today’s 6.6-liter gasoline V8 produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. GM pairs it with an Allison-branded 10-speed automatic, a combination introduced across the refreshed HD range for the 2024 model year. GM has not disclosed output figures for the reported L8S, so any claim that horsepower or torque will rise would currently be speculation. Even without confirmed numbers, updating the gasoline engine is meaningful. Commercial fleets, snowplow operators and owners who tow less frequently can value the simpler gasoline proposition while still requiring the chassis strength of a 2500HD or 3500HD.
L6P Signals the Next Chapter for Duramax
Diesel buyers may see the larger change. GM Authority reports that the L6P will replace the current L5P Duramax in the 2027 Silverado HD and Sierra HD. Despite online speculation about a larger-displacement diesel, neither GM nor the reporting source has confirmed the L6P’s displacement. For now, it is safest to treat figures circulating outside verified reporting as rumours rather than specifications.
The engine it would replace sets a demanding baseline. GM’s current 6.6-liter Duramax V8 produces 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, with peak torque arriving at 1,600 rpm. Chevrolet currently advertises up to 36,000 pounds of available Silverado HD towing capacity when properly configured. Those figures explain why a Duramax redesign attracts attention far beyond horsepower enthusiasts. A rancher moving livestock or a contractor hauling an excavator cares about sustained pulling ability, cooling and drivability under load. GM has yet to reveal how the L6P will improve that formula.
Ford and Ram Keep the Heavy-Duty Power Race Intense
Any new GM diesel enters a segment where four-digit torque figures have become almost routine. Ford’s 2026 Super Duty offers a high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke rated at 500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque, with properly configured trucks rated to tow as much as 40,000 pounds. Ram’s 6.7-liter high-output Cummins produces 430 horsepower and 1,075 pound-feet, with maximum available towing reaching 36,610 pounds.
GM’s current Duramax counters with 470 horsepower, 975 pound-feet and Chevrolet’s advertised 36,000-pound maximum towing figure. Those numbers cannot predict what the L6P will deliver, but they illustrate the competitive environment confronting GM engineers. Heavy-duty buyers increasingly compare far more than peak torque, including transmission behaviour, exhaust braking, payload, cooling performance and ease of trailering. A modest numerical increase may therefore tell only part of the story once GM releases the L6P’s complete specifications and capability ratings.
November Is Shaping Up as the Changeover Month
The production calendar gives the engine news added urgency. GM Authority reports that 2027 Silverado HD Crew Cab production is scheduled to begin November 16, 2026. Double Cab production is expected to follow on November 23, with Regular Cab production beginning November 30. Order banks are currently expected to open September 17. Industry tracking from MarkLines has also reported the November start for the 2027 HD program.
That staggered sequence is typical of a model-year launch in which multiple configurations need to move through the manufacturing system. Crew Cabs arriving first is especially relevant because they represent an important configuration for both personal-use and commercial HD customers. The dates remain production-plan information rather than a formal public launch announcement from Chevrolet, meaning schedules can still change. For buyers deciding between an outgoing 2026 and incoming 2027 truck, the approaching order-bank and production dates nevertheless make the engine transition much more immediate.
Flint Assembly Remains at the Heart of the HD Business
Whatever changes reach the 2027 trucks will ultimately converge at Flint Assembly in Michigan, where GM builds the Silverado HD and Sierra HD. The facility opened in 1947 and is GM’s longest-running North American assembly plant. In March 2026, the company celebrated the production of Flint Assembly’s 16 millionth vehicle, underscoring how much automotive history sits behind today’s heavy-duty production line.
GM has also committed serious money to the site’s future. In 2023, the automaker announced more than $1 billion in investment across Flint Assembly and Flint Metal Center to prepare for next-generation internal-combustion heavy-duty trucks. Of that total, $788 million was allocated to Flint Assembly for expanded body-shop and general-assembly capabilities, tooling and equipment. GM did not tie that investment specifically to the 2027 engine update. Still, it demonstrates that internal-combustion HD pickups remain strategically important even while the company simultaneously builds electric Silverado and Sierra models elsewhere.
Duramax Manufacturing Carries Its Own Long History
The diesel side of GM’s heavy-duty operation stretches beyond Flint. GM identifies DMAX in Moraine, Ohio, as the manufacturing operation producing diesel engines for Silverado HD and Sierra HD pickups. The operation began production in 2000, and GM says its workforce has manufactured more than two million Duramax engines for heavy-duty trucks across North America.
That manufacturing history makes any generational Duramax change a substantial industrial event, not simply another option added to an order guide. Engines destined for trucks expected to spend years towing commercially must move from development and validation into repeatable high-volume production. GM has not publicly confirmed where the reported L6P will be manufactured, so the existing DMAX footprint should not automatically be treated as confirmation of the new engine’s production location. What is clear is that GM maintains a dedicated U.S. diesel-manufacturing operation supporting its HD pickups, while Flint Assembly brings the completed truck together farther north in Michigan.
The 2027 Emissions Landscape Adds Another Layer
The reported engines are also arriving at an unusual regulatory moment. EPA criteria-pollutant standards for heavy-duty engines beginning with model year 2027 were designed to reduce pollutants such as nitrogen oxides over a broader range of operating conditions and for longer portions of an engine’s useful life. The agency originally described the standards as more than 80 percent stronger than the preceding requirements.
Regulation surrounding diesel after-treatment remains in motion, however. In July 2026, the EPA proposed amendments affecting model-year-2027-and-later heavy-duty engines, including changes to provisions governing selective catalytic reduction systems that use diesel exhaust fluid. The proposal would replace certain engine-derate and speed-reduction requirements with audible or visual notifications. GM Authority has noted that the L6P’s eventual DEF strategy remains unknown. Crucially, GM has not said the L8S or L6P was developed because of these rules, so the regulatory timing should be viewed as context rather than a confirmed cause.
Gas and Diesel Still Serve Very Different HD Buyers
A new gasoline engine alongside a new diesel reinforces why GM continues offering two distinct solutions. Chevrolet currently rates the gas-powered Silverado HD for as much as 19,080 pounds of available towing, while properly configured Duramax models can reach 36,000 pounds. Across the Silverado HD range, Chevrolet advertises maximum available payload of 7,237 pounds, although actual ratings depend heavily on configuration and equipment.
That separation matters in the real world. Someone towing a large fifth-wheel trailer repeatedly across mountain grades may place a premium on the diesel’s enormous low-speed torque. A municipal fleet, landscaping company or owner hauling equipment locally may determine that the gasoline truck better matches its workload and ownership priorities. The reported L8S and L6P update suggests GM is not forcing those customers toward a single answer. Instead, both sides of the HD powertrain lineup are apparently being renewed together, preserving a choice that remains fundamental to the heavy-duty pickup market.
The Biggest Numbers Are Still Missing
Despite the significance of the report, several of the details buyers care about most remain unknown. GM has not announced horsepower or torque ratings for either reported engine. The L6P’s displacement has not been confirmed, nor have its turbocharger design, fuel-system changes or emissions hardware. GM also has not published new towing ratings tied to these engines or formally announced 2027 Silverado HD and Sierra HD pricing.
That distinction matters because the 2027 light-duty Silverado 1500 has already received an official GM reveal, complete with next-generation V8 information, while the HD powertrain story remains based on sourced reporting. The safest conclusion is therefore narrower than some speculation online: strong reporting indicates the 2027 HD trucks are preparing to adopt an updated 6.6-liter L8S gasoline engine and a replacement L6P Duramax, with production approaching in November. The performance numbers that will determine how transformative those engines really are still have to come from GM.
