Canadian Tire Motorsport Park produced the kind of afternoon that can define more than one career at once. Andrew Ranger won the WeatherTech 200 after controlling the closing stages and surviving a late overtime restart, while Marc-Antoine Camirand finished second and clinched a third consecutive NASCAR Canada Series championship. The result made Camirand the first driver in series history to complete a three-peat, adding another milestone to a title run that began in 2024.

It was hardly a quiet coronation: an early incident brought Camirand a stop-and-go penalty and sent him toward the back before he fought his way onto the podium. For Ranger, the victory ended a winless 2026 season and added another chapter to the career of the series’ all-time victories leader. The two Quebec veterans left CTMP with different trophies, but equally significant reasons to celebrate.

Camirand Turns a Comfortable Points Lead Into History

Camirand entered the WeatherTech 200 in an unusually secure championship position. NASCAR Canada calculated that a finish of 31st or better would be enough to lock up the title regardless of what his nearest rival, L.P. Dumoulin, did. Instead of simply circulating safely, the No. 96 GM Paillé/Chevrolet Canada Chevrolet recovered from adversity and finished second at CTMP, turning a mathematical formality into one of the strongest drives of the afternoon on Sunday.

The championship is Camirand’s third in a row and fourth of his career, following titles in 2022, 2024 and 2025. That sequence is especially significant because NASCAR Canada had never had a back-to-back champion until Camirand achieved the feat in 2025. One year later, he extended the record to three consecutive crowns. His fourth career championship also brings him level with Scott Steckly, who had stood alone with four series titles before Camirand’s latest success in 2026.

Ranger Finally Converts Speed Into a 2026 Victory

Andrew Ranger’s season had included strong runs and podium finishes, but the breakthrough victory had remained out of reach. At CTMP, the three-time series champion started sixth and built his race around tire preservation, fuel management and clean restarts. Ranger moved into the lead with 20 laps remaining and eventually opened an advantage of roughly 10 seconds, appearing to have the race under control before a late caution erased the gap.

The overtime restart forced Ranger to win the race a second time. He launched cleanly, created enough separation to protect the lead and took the checkered flag ahead of Camirand. NASCAR Canada described it as Ranger’s first victory of the 2026 season. He entered the year as the series’ career wins leader with 35 victories, so the CTMP result raises that total to 36. It also reinforced his reputation as one of Canadian stock-car racing’s most accomplished road racers.

An Early Penalty Makes Camirand’s Runner-Up Finish Matter More

Camirand’s championship-clinching afternoon could easily have become a cautious drive focused only on avoiding trouble. Instead, trouble arrived immediately. Early contact involving Camirand and Connor Bell sent Bell into the wall, although Bell was able to continue. NASCAR officials later assessed Camirand a stop-and-go penalty for his role in the incident, forcing the championship leader to give up track position and work back through the field.

That recovery became one of the stories of the race. Camirand climbed through traffic while the lead changed hands through pit cycles and strategy. In the closing stages, he passed D.J. Kennington for second place and stayed there through the overtime finish. The result was better than the minimum he needed to clinch the championship. It also illustrated why his title defence was built on more than speed: even on a difficult day, the No. 96 team found a way to maximize the result.

The WeatherTech 200 Rewards Patience as Much as Pace

Kyle Steckly started from pole after a 1:22.996 qualifying lap, with Tyler Gonzalez alongside him on the front row. Gonzalez grabbed the lead on the opening lap, but the race soon became a strategic contest rather than a sprint. Pit stops reshuffled the order, Gonzalez stopped on track, and Steckly surrendered the lead when he headed to pit road with 28 laps remaining. D.J. Kennington then moved to the front at halfway.

Ranger’s approach paid off as the stint developed. He waited until 20 laps remained to take over the lead, then began building the cushion that appeared likely to decide the race. A late full-course yellow changed everything by triggering NASCAR Overtime. With the field compressed for one restart, Ranger had no margin for error. He executed the restart, while Camirand and returning champion Cayden Lapcevich completed the podium behind him. The finish rewarded speed and disciplined race management.

Camirand’s Seven-Win Season Created the Championship Cushion

The CTMP title clinch was made possible by months of dominance. Camirand had already won seven races in 2026 before arriving for the Labour Day weekend event. His season included doubleheader sweeps at Autodrome Chaudière and Autodrome Montmagny, followed by additional victories during the summer, including the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières and the inaugural NASCAR Canada race on the streets of Markham. By late August, his points advantage had grown to 82 over L.P. Dumoulin.

The Markham victory was Camirand’s seventh of the season, matching the established series mark for most wins in one year listed by NASCAR Canada before 2026. Treyten Lapcevich won seven times in 2023, while D.J. Kennington reached seven in 2012. Camirand did not get an eighth at CTMP, but clinching the championship before the finale gave the team something nearly as valuable: freedom to chase another win at Delaware Speedway without protecting a points lead.

A Paillé-Backed One-Two Finish Gives the Day Extra Weight

The first two cars across the line Sunday carried the same GM Paillé and Chevrolet Canada backing. Ranger’s No. 27 and Camirand’s No. 96 approached the afternoon with different goals, yet the outcome delivered a headline for the organizations and partners connected to both programs: a race victory and a championship clinch on the same day. Ranger supplied the win, while Camirand’s second place secured the season-long prize.

The result also highlighted the experience surrounding the two veteran Quebec drivers. Camirand has built his championship run with owner Jean-Claude Paillé and crew chief Robin McCluskey, the same combination credited with his 2024 and 2025 titles. Ranger, meanwhile, brought decades of experience and an unmatched record of series victories to the No. 27 effort. Their one-two finish at one of Canada’s most demanding road courses showed how preparation and strategy can separate elite teams when a late caution resets the race.

Cayden Lapcevich’s Return Produces an Unexpected Podium

Cayden Lapcevich added a human storyline to an eventful race. The 2016 NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion returned to NASCAR Canada competition at CTMP with Glenn Styres Racing and Velocity Race Cars after years away from series driving. NASCAR noted before the weekend that Lapcevich now works on the other side of the pit wall as a car chief with Halmar Friesen Racing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

The comeback proved competitive rather than a ceremonial appearance. Lapcevich moved forward as the race developed and passed Kennington for third with eight laps remaining. He held the position through overtime to complete the podium behind Ranger and Camirand. Afterward, Lapcevich noted that he had not road raced in roughly a decade, making the result more striking. For a driver who became the series’ youngest champion at 16 in 2016, finishing third in a return race a decade later created a full-circle moment.

CTMP Again Shows Why It Is a Defining NASCAR Canada Venue

Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is not another stop on the calendar. The 3.957-kilometre, 10-turn Grand Prix circuit opened in 1961 and has hosted generations of major international racers. Its fast corners, elevation changes and limited room for mistakes have made it a recurring measuring stick for NASCAR Canada drivers, especially those with road-course backgrounds. The 2026 Labour Day weekend added another championship milestone to that history.

Interest around the event was also reflected in the entry list. NASCAR Canada announced a record-setting 39-car field for the WeatherTech 200, including former champions Lapcevich and J.R. Fitzpatrick and a series debut for Nicolas Barrette. Earlier in the year, Gary Klutt had won the season-opening CTMP race, so the September return brought a fresh strategic challenge rather than a repeat of May. Ranger’s victory and Camirand’s clinch ensured that the second visit carried even greater historical weight for the series and the circuit.

Ranger and Camirand Now Sit in Rare Company

The CTMP result brought two of the defining drivers of the Canadian NASCAR era into the same spotlight. Ranger won the inaugural series championship in 2007, added another in 2009 and then waited a decade before earning his third in 2019. He has also built the series’ largest career victory total. His CTMP win showed that, nearly two decades after that first championship, he remains capable of controlling a major road-course race.

Camirand’s path has been different but increasingly historic. His first championship came in 2022 after a season with three wins, nine top-five finishes and 11 top-10s in 13 races. He returned to the top in 2024, became the first back-to-back champion in 2025 and then made it three straight in 2026. The comparison is not about declaring one career greater. It shows how NASCAR Canada’s history is being shaped simultaneously by Ranger’s longevity and Camirand’s unprecedented championship streak.

One Race Remains, but the Championship Pressure Is Gone

The 2026 season is not finished. NASCAR Canada heads to Delaware Speedway on September 12 for the final race, where Camirand is scheduled to celebrate the championship. With the title secured at CTMP, the No. 96 team can approach Delaware without the calculations that normally dominate a finale. Camirand has said the goal remains another victory, even though Delaware has not traditionally been one of his strongest tracks.

That creates a final target. An eighth win would move Camirand beyond the seven-win single-season benchmark that stood before 2026, while another strong performance would close one of the most successful title defences in series history. Ranger’s CTMP victory, meanwhile, ensures that his season contains a signature result of its own. The championship was decided before the final green flag of the year, but CTMP made sure the broader story of 2026 still has multiple winners and one last chapter to run.
