A four-digit electric-range figure is enough to make almost any new EV stand out, and BYD’s premium Denza brand is leaning into exactly that with its latest N8. Reservations for the large five-seat electric SUV opened in China on October 26, 2026, ahead of a planned November market launch. The headline specification is a maximum 1,003 kilometres of range under China’s CLTC test cycle, supported by a battery pack as large as 130.15 kWh. Denza is also offering rear-wheel-drive and tri-motor all-wheel-drive configurations, with the most powerful version rated at roughly 1,193 horsepower. Pricing has not yet been announced. For Canadian shoppers watching the rapid expansion of Chinese EV makers, there is another important qualifier: Denza has not announced a Canadian launch for the N8.

Reservations Open Before Pricing Is Revealed

China’s reservation opening turns the N8 from a promising regulatory filing into a product moving closer to showrooms. Denza began taking reservations on October 26 after confirming the date several days earlier, but the company stopped short of publishing a final price. The official market launch is expected in November, leaving buyers with a short window in which many of the core specifications are known while the exact cost and final trim structure remain unresolved. That makes the N8 unusual only in degree, not in strategy; Chinese automakers increasingly use early specification reveals to build attention before the full commercial package is disclosed.

The timing also matters because the N8 is entering a crowded premium electric-SUV market where buyers can choose among increasingly large batteries, sophisticated driver-assistance systems and high-output multi-motor powertrains. Denza’s immediate pitch is therefore easy to understand: long range, substantial passenger space and some of BYD’s newest charging technology in one vehicle. The unanswered question is whether the eventual price will make those specifications feel attainable or merely impressive on paper. The six-seat N8L EV, which launched in September, provides some context by starting at 299,800 yuan, but Denza has not said that the five-seat N8 will follow the same pricing pattern.

Five Seats Create More Space for Passengers and Cargo

The new N8 is a large SUV in the literal sense. It measures 5,150 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,820 mm tall, with a 3,075-mm wheelbase. That makes it only 50 mm shorter than the six-seat N8L while retaining the same width, height and wheelbase. The crucial difference is inside: the N8 is configured for five occupants rather than six. By giving up a third row, Denza can devote more room to second-row comfort and cargo, a trade-off aimed at households that want flagship-SUV space without regularly carrying six or seven people.

That packaging choice produces one of the N8’s more practical numbers. Denza lists 1,046 litres of standard cargo space, along with sliding rear seats that allow owners to rebalance passenger and luggage room. The cabin also incorporates what Denza describes as zero-gravity seating, reinforcing the model’s comfort-first positioning. In daily use, those details may matter more than the dramatic horsepower figure. A five-seat layout can be especially useful for luggage-heavy family trips, airport runs or long-distance travel because the cargo area does not have to share space with a folded third row. It also gives the N8 a clearer identity beside the closely related N8L instead of turning the two SUVs into near-duplicates.

The 1,003-km Range Comes With an Important Asterisk

The number likely to attract the most attention is 1,003 km, or about 623 miles, but it needs the right context. The N8’s certification information lists two lithium-iron-phosphate battery capacities: 105.792 kWh and 130.15 kWh. Depending on configuration, published CLTC range figures span 800, 840, 970 and 1,003 km. The four-digit maximum is associated with the larger 130.15-kWh battery, giving Denza one of the more striking headline range figures among large electric SUVs. It is an impressive engineering target, but it is not a promise that every N8 will travel 1,003 km in ordinary driving.

The reason is the test cycle. CLTC is the Chinese certification standard, and its result should not be treated as interchangeable with a Canadian EnerGuide figure, a U.S. EPA rating or Europe’s WLTP figure. Different test procedures use different speed profiles and operating conditions, which can materially alter an EV’s certified range. Natural Resources Canada uses controlled laboratory procedures that account for city and highway operation as well as cold-temperature driving, air-conditioning use and higher-speed conditions. Until an N8 is officially certified for Canada, there is no defensible Canadian range figure. For now, 1,003 km is best understood as the N8’s maximum China-market CLTC rating rather than an estimate of how far a Canadian-market version would travel.

Tri-Motor Version Pushes Output to Nearly 1,200 Horsepower

Range is only half of the N8’s technical story. Denza plans rear-wheel-drive versions with single motors rated at 320 kW and 370 kW, giving the less complicated configurations substantial power before the flagship model even enters the picture. At the top of the lineup sits a tri-motor all-wheel-drive version using one 270-kW motor at the front and two 310-kW motors at the rear. Combined output is listed at 890 kW, equivalent to roughly 1,193 horsepower, while the vehicle’s certified top speed is 240 km/h.

Those numbers place the N8 firmly in the modern category of family-sized EVs with supercar-like output, although Denza has not published an official 0–100 km/h acceleration time for the new N8. The three-motor configuration uses the brand’s e3 technology and also enables specialized low-speed manoeuvres such as a compass-turn function. For many buyers, the single-motor versions may ultimately be more relevant because they already offer far more power than a conventional family SUV requires. Still, the 890-kW flagship gives Denza a performance halo and helps distinguish the N8 from premium rivals that compete mainly on passenger comfort, battery range or brand prestige.

Flash Charging Could Make the Huge Battery Easier to Live With

Denza is pairing the N8 with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and its newest Flash Charging technology. BYD’s broader Flash Charging system is engineered for exceptionally high charging power, with the company advertising up to 1,500 kW through a single connector in its highest-capability setup. Denza says the technology can take compatible batteries from 10% to 70% state of charge in about five minutes and from 10% to 97% in roughly nine minutes. BYD also claims that charging from 20% to 97% can be completed in about 12 minutes at minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Those figures are manufacturer claims and depend on access to the necessary high-power charging equipment, so they should not be interpreted as what an N8 would achieve at an ordinary public DC fast charger. Infrastructure is an important part of the story. BYD reported in March that it had already installed 4,239 Flash Charging stations in China and was targeting 20,000 by the end of 2026, alongside plans for overseas deployment. For a battery as large as 130.15 kWh, the ability to accept extremely high charging power could ultimately matter almost as much as the nominal driving range. A huge battery becomes far more useful for long-distance travel when replenishing it does not automatically mean an extended charging stop.

The Cabin Carries the Same Technology-Heavy Approach

The N8’s cabin is designed to look as technologically ambitious as its drivetrain. Denza has shown a 30-inch central display paired with a 1.1-metre-wide PHUD information display for functions including navigation and vehicle speed. The rear seats can slide, the cargo compartment is rated at 1,046 litres, and the five-seat configuration allows the second row to play a larger role in the luxury experience than it would in a tightly packaged three-row SUV. The result is a vehicle that tries to combine the spaciousness of a large family crossover with the technology emphasis expected from a flagship Chinese EV.

The chassis and assistance systems add another layer. Denza says the N8 features its God’s Eye 5.0 driver-assistance system, DiSus-A intelligent air suspension and rear-wheel steering. The tri-motor version also supports specialized manoeuvres including a compass-turn function and an intelligent crawl mode. Together, those features show how Denza is positioning the N8: not simply as a large battery wrapped in an SUV body, but as a technology showcase combining comfort, software and complex chassis hardware. The practical value of those systems will depend on their calibration and real-world performance, particularly for driver-assistance features, but the equipment list makes clear that Denza is targeting buyers who expect more than screens and straight-line speed from a premium EV.

Denza Is Giving the N8 Nameplate a Second Chance

The N8 badge has a complicated recent history. Denza originally launched an N8 plug-in hybrid in China in August 2023 with six- and seven-seat configurations. The model struggled to build sustained sales momentum and was discontinued less than a year after its introduction. Denza later reworked the idea into the larger N8L, which arrived in 2025 and has since expanded into both plug-in-hybrid and battery-electric versions. The 2026 N8 is therefore less of a conventional update and more of a reuse of the name for a substantially different five-seat battery-electric SUV.

That reset comes as Denza attempts to broaden its appeal beyond a handful of core vehicles. The N8L recorded 4,002 sales in China in June 2026, while Denza as a whole reached 20,352 vehicles that month, marking the brand’s first month above 20,000 sales. Meanwhile, Denza is expanding internationally with models including the Z9GT and D9, and it has outlined plans for a presence in more than 30 European countries by the end of 2026. The new N8 fits that broader technology strategy, but its confirmed commercial focus remains China. Denza’s international expansion should not be interpreted to mean that every model offered at home will automatically be exported.

Canada Is More Open to Chinese EVs, but the N8 Has Not Been Announced

For Canada, the most accurate description is straightforward: there is no announced Denza N8 launch. Denza’s current global country selector lists markets across Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and parts of the Americas, including Brazil, Costa Rica and Mexico, but not Canada. BYD itself now operates an official Canadian website and says its vehicles will be sold through approved dealers, yet the company’s Canadian terms also state that the website does not currently allow vehicle purchases, leases, reservations, pre-orders or deposits. Nothing on those official channels establishes the N8 as a Canadian product.

The policy environment, however, is considerably more open to Chinese-made EVs than it was in 2024 or 2025. Canada repealed its 100% surtax on Chinese EVs effective March 1, 2026 and replaced it with a managed country-specific quota. The initial annual quota is 49,000 vehicles, with qualifying imports assessed at the 6.1% most-favoured-nation tariff rate and shipment-specific import permits required. That creates a pathway for Chinese EV manufacturers to enter Canada, but a trade framework is not the same thing as a product announcement. Until Denza confirms Canadian certification, pricing, dealers and an on-sale date, the N8 remains a China-market reservation story with obvious Canadian interest but no Canadian launch.
