BMW is recalling 27,720 vehicles in the United States after determining that excessive wear can develop where the driveshaft connects to the rear-axle differential. In rare cases, that deterioration can interrupt power delivery to the rear wheels, increasing crash risk. It can also create a separate rollaway hazard if an affected vehicle is parked without the parking brake engaged.
The campaign reaches selected 5 Series, 7 Series and 8 Series cars spanning the 2021 through 2026 model years. BMW’s regulatory filing shows the company began investigating field incidents in late 2024 and spent well over a year examining returned components, manufacturing data and engineering simulations before approving a voluntary safety recall in August 2026. The repair will depend on what technicians find during inspection.
The Recall Covers 27,720 BMW 5, 7 and 8 Series Cars
The largest share of the recall involves the 2021-2023 BMW 5 Series. BMW identified 18,150 potentially affected examples of the 540i, 540i xDrive and M550i xDrive. Another 7,372 vehicles come from the 2022-2026 8 Series range, specifically the 840i and 840i xDrive. Completing the population are 2,198 examples of the 2024-2026 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid. Together, those groups bring the official U.S. recall population to 27,720 vehicles, slightly below the rounded “nearly 28,000” figure appearing in headlines.
The production windows are broader than the model-year descriptions might suggest. BMW says potentially affected 8 Series vehicles were produced from March 5, 2021, through March 25, 2026, while the 750e xDrive production period runs from June 20, 2023, through May 26, 2026. The affected 5 Series cars were produced between March 15, 2021, and June 29, 2023. Ownership of one of these models does not automatically mean a particular car contains the defect; the campaign population was established using vehicle assembly information and supplier production records.
The Failure Point Sits at a Critical Driveline Junction
At the centre of the recall is the connection between the driveshaft and the rear-axle differential. In a conventional longitudinal drivetrain, the driveshaft carries rotational force rearward, while the differential distributes that force toward the driven wheels. BMW’s filing says the interface between those components can experience excessive wear over time. If that connection deteriorates far enough, power may no longer be transmitted properly to the rear wheels.
That creates two different safety concerns. The most obvious is a loss of rear-wheel drive power while the car is being operated, something NHTSA says could increase the risk of a crash. The less intuitive danger appears after the vehicle is stopped. BMW says the same condition can allow a vehicle to roll away in rare circumstances when it has not been secured with the parking brake. Notably, the formal recall report does not identify a specific dashboard warning, noise or other advance symptom that owners can reliably watch for. That makes VIN-based recall identification more important than waiting for an obvious sign that the driveline is wearing out.
BMW Spent More Than a Year Investigating the Problem
BMW’s chronology shows that this was not a defect identified in a single factory inspection. The company says an engineering investigation began in December 2024 after it noticed an increasing number of field incidents. During the first quarter of 2025, BMW established a parts-return program so engineers could inspect hardware removed from customer vehicles. The initial cases were associated with high-mileage cars, directing early attention toward long-term wear at the driveshaft-to-differential interface rather than an immediately obvious production failure.
The investigation became unusually broad. Between the first and third quarters of 2025, BMW used finite-element modelling to study surface pressures where the components connect. Engineers reviewed production information across assembly plants, conducted bench testing designed to reproduce damage found on returned parts and performed metallurgical examinations of drivetrain components. Work continued into 2026 with supplier checks, comparisons involving different driveline designs, calculations of propeller-shaft mounting angles and statistical forecasting that included Weibull analysis, a method commonly used to assess reliability and failure behaviour over time. BMW ultimately decided on August 5, 2026, that a voluntary safety recall was warranted.
The Fix Could Be Small — or Involve Major Components
The repair strategy is unusual because two cars arriving for the same recall may leave the dealership after very different amounts of work. BMW says technicians will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and rear-axle differential. Depending on the condition found, the dealership will either apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear-axle differential. All work performed under the safety recall is to be completed at no charge to the owner.
The reference to adhesive has attracted attention because it can sound surprisingly simple for a defect involving major drivetrain hardware. The official filing, however, does not identify the adhesive formulation or describe it as ordinary consumer glue, nor does it provide enough technical information to conclude precisely why one vehicle qualifies for that repair while another requires component replacement. BMW also does not state a definitive root cause in the public defect report; the “description of the cause” field is left unspecified. That distinction matters. What is established is the observed excessive wear and the inspection-based repair procedure, not speculation about the engineering mechanism behind every affected vehicle.
Only a Small Percentage Are Expected to Develop the Defect
Although 27,720 vehicles are potentially involved, BMW estimates that just 0.2% of the recall population actually contains the defect. Applied across the entire campaign, that percentage would correspond to roughly 55 vehicles if the estimate proves accurate. The much larger recall population reflects the way safety campaigns are designed: manufacturers must identify the range of vehicles that could contain the problem, rather than attempt to recall only cars that have already failed.
BMW’s investigation helps explain why the population had to be defined broadly. Early field incidents were associated with higher-mileage vehicles, yet engineers examined factory information, supplier records, different assembly locations and multiple drivetrain configurations before establishing the final boundaries. The company also continued monitoring field data and used reliability forecasting during its analysis. Those steps are significant because wear-related problems can emerge gradually and at different mileages depending on operating conditions. A car functioning normally today therefore cannot be assumed to be outside the concern solely because it has not experienced a driveline problem.
BMW Reported No Related Crashes or Injuries
The potential consequences are serious, but BMW told federal regulators that it was not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with the defect when the recall report was submitted on August 12, 2026. The NHTSA filing also does not carry a “Do Not Drive” or “Park Outside” consumer advisory. Those distinctions indicate that regulators and the manufacturer are not instructing affected owners to immediately stop using their vehicles under the campaign as currently filed.
That does not make the recall optional from a practical safety standpoint. BMW explicitly identifies a possible loss of power to the rear wheels and a separate rollaway possibility. The parking-brake issue is particularly easy to address while owners wait for inspection: securing the vehicle with the parking brake removes the condition BMW specifically identifies in connection with potential rollaway. For the driving-related risk, there is no official symptom checklist in the filing. Owners who experience an abnormal driveline condition should avoid assuming that a car is safe simply because the recall is statistically expected to affect only a small fraction of the overall population.
Owner Notifications Are Scheduled for October 2
BMW notified dealers about the campaign on August 12, while the formal recall schedule lists October 2, 2026, for first-class owner notifications. The NHTSA report also says affected VINs are planned to become searchable through the federal database on October 2. BMW maintains its own VIN-based recall lookup and allows owners to view recall and campaign information through the My BMW App. Because recall eligibility is ultimately determined by VIN, checking the individual car is more reliable than relying only on model and model year.
Owners whose vehicles are included will be directed to an authorized BMW dealer for the free inspection and required repair. BMW also says people who already paid to have a comparable repair performed before receiving the recall notification may qualify for reimbursement under the company’s federal reimbursement plan. Documentation matters in those situations: BMW’s reimbursement guidance asks owners to retain invoices and proof of payment and generally routes claims through an authorized BMW centre. NHTSA notes more broadly that safety recalls do not expire, an important point for used-car shoppers who may encounter one of these BMWs years after the original campaign was announced.
