Eagers Automotive’s move into Canada has started producing numbers large enough to reshape the Australian dealership giant almost immediately. After completing its majority investment in Edmonton-based CanadaOne Auto at the end of April, Eagers consolidated only two months of the Canadian operation into its first-half 2026 accounts. Even so, CanadaOne contributed about A$1 billion of turnover, helping Eagers lift group revenue to a record A$8.05 billion.

The result offers the first meaningful look at what Eagers bought with its roughly A$1 billion investment. It also requires some currency context: management described CanadaOne’s local May-and-June turnover as approximately C$1 billion, while Eagers’ consolidated presentation reports roughly A$1 billion from the Canadian operation. More important than the currency translation is the underlying message—the Canadian business has become material to Eagers almost immediately.

CanadaOne Changed the Scale of Eagers Almost Overnight

Eagers reported first-half revenue of A$8.05 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2026, an increase of 24% from A$6.50 billion a year earlier. Australia and New Zealand remained the core of the company, contributing roughly A$7 billion, but the Canadian business supplied approximately A$1 billion despite appearing in Eagers’ accounts for only May and June. Underlying operating profit before tax climbed 26.6% to A$250.4 million, meaning earnings expanded slightly faster than revenue.

CanadaOne’s first contribution was substantial beyond the top line. Eagers reported A$43.2 million of underlying operating profit before tax from Canada during the two-month period, with a 4.2% return-on-sales margin. The dealerships delivered roughly 9,500 new vehicles and 9,100 used vehicles during those two months. For perspective, that means the Canadian platform was moving around 300 vehicles a day across the period. An acquisition that had existed primarily as a strategic promise only months earlier was already contributing enough volume and profit to be visible throughout Eagers’ group results.

The A$1 Billion Revenue Figure Needs One Important Currency Distinction

There are two billion-dollar figures surrounding CanadaOne, and they describe different things. Eagers agreed in 2025 to invest C$953 million—approximately A$1.043 billion at the exchange rate used in its transaction materials—for a 65% equity interest in CanadaOne. That was the investment price. Separately, Eagers’ latest consolidated results attribute roughly A$1 billion of turnover to CanadaOne for May and June. Management discussed the Canadian operation in its local currency as generating approximately C$1 billion over those same two months.

That distinction matters because CanadaOne remains a Canadian operating business while Eagers reports its consolidated accounts in Australian dollars. Exchange rates therefore affect how Canadian revenue, profits, assets and liabilities appear in Eagers’ financial statements even when the underlying dealerships have not changed. The ownership structure also leaves significant Canadian participation in place. Eagers owns 65% of the CanadaOne holding company, while interests associated with founder Pat Priestner retain 35%. It is not a conventional full takeover in which the previous owner simply leaves; the structure was intentionally designed as a continuing partnership.

Forty-Two Dealerships Give Eagers an Immediate Canadian Footprint

CanadaOne currently operates 42 franchised dealerships across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. The company says its network employs more than 3,000 people and represents a broad mix of brands, including Toyota, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, BMW, MINI and Stellantis marques. Eagers estimates that CanadaOne retailed approximately 48,000 new vehicles in 2025, equal to roughly 2.5% of Canada’s new-vehicle market.

Those numbers make CanadaOne unusually substantial in a dealership industry that remains fragmented. The Canadian Automobile Dealers Association counted 3,778 franchised new light-vehicle dealerships in 2025, which collectively sold about 1.90 million new vehicles. Average dealership sales reached C$62.9 million. Eagers’ acquisition materials said CanadaOne’s new-vehicle sales per dealership were roughly twice the industry average for comparable leading brands. Behind that statistic are dozens of businesses that still operate locally—sales teams, technicians, parts departments and service advisers spread from Vancouver Island to southern Ontario—but which now sit inside a multinational automotive retail group.

The First Two Months Were More Than an Acquisition Accounting Boost

Adding a large company naturally makes consolidated revenue rise, so the more revealing figure is what happened inside CanadaOne itself. Eagers said average monthly CanadaOne turnover stood at approximately C$411 million when the partnership was announced in 2025. By the end of that year, it had increased to about C$445 million. During the first two months following completion, like-for-like turnover was another 7.5% higher than during the corresponding period a year earlier, with Eagers describing the increase as entirely organic.

Vehicle volumes also strengthened. CanadaOne recorded what management called an all-time combined new-and-used retail delivery record in May, the first full month after Eagers completed its investment. During the two-month reporting period, Eagers said CanadaOne’s vehicle volumes increased about 5.5%, while the same collection of brands across the wider Canadian market grew only 0.7%. Momentum apparently continued beyond the reporting cutoff: management told analysts that July turnover was 12.8% above July 2025. Two months cannot establish a long-term trend, but the early numbers suggest the acquisition landed while CanadaOne itself was still expanding.

Canada’s Fragmented Dealer Market Is a Major Part of the Strategy

Eagers did not enter Canada simply because CanadaOne happened to be available. Its acquisition presentation emphasized the structure of Canadian automotive retail. The country has thousands of franchised dealerships, yet Eagers estimated the five largest dealership groups together account for less than 10% of locations. That leaves far more ownership fragmentation than in many mature retail industries and creates opportunities for well-capitalized groups to buy dealerships from owners contemplating retirement, succession or expansion partners.

There is also more to dealership economics than selling new cars. CADA reported C$33.1 billion of service and parts sales across Canadian franchised dealerships in 2025 and nearly 31 million repair orders. Those recurring activities can provide important revenue when vehicle pricing or showroom demand becomes less predictable. CanadaOne also entered the partnership with strong exposure to Toyota, Ford and General Motors, three of Canada’s largest-selling manufacturers. Eagers has said the Canadian platform could eventually support additional acquisitions as well as the expansion of businesses such as independent used-car retailing, finance and insurance products, vehicle care and other mobility services.

A Full CanadaOne Contribution Could Transform Eagers’ Financial Profile

The first-half figures capture only two months of Canadian ownership, making the second half of 2026 potentially much more revealing. Eagers expects CanadaOne to contribute throughout the full six-month period from July through December. Its pro-forma analysis—showing what recent results would resemble with a full 12 months of CanadaOne included—puts group revenue at approximately A$19 billion and underlying profit before tax at about A$652.5 million. Pro-forma earnings per share were shown at 114.9 cents, approximately 22% above the comparable base.

Eagers is entering that period with considerably greater scale but also a larger balance sheet. Available liquidity stood at about A$2.61 billion at June 30, while net corporate debt was A$674.9 million. Its owned property portfolio had expanded to roughly A$1.62 billion, partly reflecting the Canadian transaction. The company nevertheless increased its fully franked interim dividend from 24 cents to a record 25 cents per share. Those figures help explain why management portrays CanadaOne not as a side investment but as the company’s second major structural transformation after the 2019 combination with Automotive Holdings Group.

Trade Tensions Are the Biggest External Complication

CanadaOne’s strong start arrives during an exceptionally uncertain period for North American automakers. The latest Canada-U.S. trade confrontation has pushed automobiles directly into the dispute. U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to raise tariffs on Canadian automobiles and parts to 50% from January 1, 2027, after negotiations between Washington and Ottawa deteriorated. The stakes extend well beyond vehicles assembled in Canada because production across Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Toyota, Honda and their suppliers is deeply integrated across the border.

Eagers management told analysts it remains alert to the situation but is not overly concerned about CanadaOne at present. That confidence does not make the risk disappear. A Canadian dealership group depends on manufacturers for vehicle allocation, competitive pricing and product availability, while consumers remain sensitive to financing costs and affordability. CADA has identified affordability as one of the defining pressures on Canadian automotive retail. Tariffs that materially alter vehicle prices, production volumes or model availability could therefore eventually reach dealership floors. Currency movements between the Canadian and Australian dollars add another variable for Eagers shareholders viewing CanadaOne through consolidated accounts.

CanadaOne Could Become a Consolidator, Not Just an Acquisition

One of the most consequential parts of the transaction may be what Eagers deliberately did not change. CanadaOne remains headquartered in Edmonton, and Pat Priestner and the existing leadership team continue to operate the company. Eagers executives have stressed that they do not intend to run Canadian dealerships remotely from Brisbane. That preserves local dealership relationships and OEM connections while placing substantially greater capital behind the Canadian group. CanadaOne’s own announcement described the partnership as a potential solution for dealership owners thinking about succession and legacy.

That message matters in an industry where many dealerships remain closely tied to families and local operators. Industry advisers have reported increased discussion around succession, partial sales and strategic partnerships as larger groups and international investors show more interest in Canadian automotive retail. CanadaOne now has access to Eagers’ balance sheet, operating experience and international relationships while retaining the management that built the Canadian platform. If additional acquisitions follow, the two months that added roughly A$1 billion to Eagers’ revenue may ultimately be remembered less as a remarkable short-term contribution than as the beginning of a much larger consolidation strategy.
