The first reports of Stellantis’ newest rearview-camera recall left Canadian drivers with an important unanswered question. The automaker said roughly 107,000 vehicles outside the United States were affected, combining Canada, Mexico and other international markets into a single figure. More detailed information has since emerged, putting the Canadian portion at approximately 82,869 vehicles.
That update makes the recall considerably more significant for Canada than the initial global announcement suggested. The campaign involves newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles whose radio software may prevent the rearview-camera image from appearing when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Stellantis says it is not aware of crashes or injuries connected with the defect, and the planned remedy is primarily an over-the-air software update.
The Recall Is Just Short of One Million Vehicles Worldwide
Stellantis’ campaign is global in scale, covering an estimated 954,885 vehicles once the more detailed regional figures are added together. The United States accounts for the overwhelming majority, with 848,511 vehicles. Canada represents another 82,869, Mexico accounts for 7,969, and approximately 15,736 vehicles are located in other international markets. Those figures explain why initial reports commonly described the action as a 955,000-vehicle recall and grouped roughly 107,000 units together outside the United States.
The size matters because this is not a defect confined to one niche model or powertrain. Stellantis is dealing with a software problem distributed across several of its highest-profile North American brands, including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram. A family minivan pulling out of a driveway, a Jeep backing into a campsite and a Ram truck manoeuvring through a crowded parking lot can therefore share the same underlying problem. The common link is not their body style but the software responsible for getting the rear camera image onto the display.
Canada’s Count Is Now Available: About 82,869 Vehicles
The Canadian picture became clearer after the first round of reports. On August 17, early coverage based on Stellantis information described approximately 107,000 affected vehicles collectively located in Canada, Mexico and other markets. Later breakdowns identified roughly 82,869 vehicles in Canada alone, meaning Canada represents close to four-fifths of the recall population outside the United States. Mexico has 7,969 affected units, while another 15,736 are spread across other markets.
That distinction is important for Canadian owners because a combined international figure can make a safety campaign appear more geographically dispersed than it actually is. It also illustrates how recall information can evolve during the first days after a campaign becomes public. Transport Canada says manufacturers must provide notices when safety defects or non-compliance issues are identified, while its online recall database is updated after notifications are received and processed. Consequently, manufacturer announcements, regulatory databases and media reports do not necessarily publish every regional detail at precisely the same moment.
Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram Models Are Involved
The U.S. campaign provides the clearest published description of the vehicle families involved. It covers certain 2026 and 2027 Chrysler Pacifica, Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid and Voyager minivans, along with certain 2026 and 2027 Dodge Charger vehicles. The Jeep side is extensive, including certain 2026 Cherokee, Compass, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L, Grand Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer L and Wrangler models. Certain 2026 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups are also included, along with ProMaster and ProMaster EV vans.
That wide product mix is one reason owners should avoid deciding whether their vehicle is affected based only on a model name. Recalls normally apply to specific production populations identified by vehicle identification numbers, not automatically to every example carrying the same badge. Two visually identical 2026 vehicles can have different recall status depending on production date, software configuration and other manufacturing details. For Canadians, a VIN lookup through the manufacturer or Transport Canada remains more reliable than assuming every Pacifica, Wrangler, Charger or Ram from the listed model years requires the update.
The Camera Hardware Isn’t the Main Problem
The unusual part of this recall is that the rear-facing camera itself is not necessarily defective. Stellantis says the problem lies in the radio software that controls how the camera image is displayed on the vehicle’s media screen. Under certain circumstances, that software may prevent the image from appearing when the transmission is placed in reverse. Reports describing the campaign say the failure can occur without advance warning, leaving a driver expecting a camera view but instead facing a display that does not provide the required rear image.
That turns an infotainment problem into a safety issue. Modern central displays handle far more than music or navigation; they increasingly serve as the interface for equipment that is regulated specifically because it helps prevent collisions. If software between the camera and display fails, perfectly functional camera hardware does little good. Stellantis says it knows of no crashes or injuries related to this campaign, but reduced rearward visibility can still increase collision risk, particularly around pedestrians, children, bicycles, parking structures and other objects that can sit below the natural sightline through a vehicle’s rear window.
Most Owners Should Get the Fix Without Visiting a Dealer
Stellantis plans to correct the problem with updated radio software delivered over the air. Once the update is available for an affected vehicle, an installation prompt is expected to appear on the media screen. Owners who successfully complete the update remotely should not have to schedule a traditional repair appointment, making this campaign fundamentally different from recalls involving defective wiring, mechanical components or parts that physically need to be removed and replaced.
The software remedy is expected to become available in September, while written notices are also expected to begin reaching affected owners around that period. If an over-the-air installation cannot be completed, dealer assistance is expected to be available without charge. Until the update is installed, Stellantis has said the vehicles can continue to be driven. The important precaution comes when reversing: if the rearview image does not appear, drivers are advised to remain especially conscious of their surroundings and rely on rearview and side mirrors rather than waiting for the electronic image to return.
Backup Cameras Are Safety Equipment, Not Just a Convenience Feature
Rearview cameras became common because they solve a basic visibility problem: drivers cannot directly see every part of the area immediately behind a vehicle. Transport Canada identifies backup cameras as rear-visibility systems and notes that they are required by Canadian regulation on passenger cars, SUVs, light pickup trucks and minivans. Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 establishes requirements covering mirrors and rear-visibility systems, which is why a camera image that fails to appear can become a regulatory compliance issue rather than merely an annoying technology fault.
The safety rationale becomes clearer in historical U.S. data. When the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized its rear-visibility rule in 2014, it cited an average of about 210 deaths and 15,000 injuries annually from backover crashes. Children under five accounted for 31% of those fatalities, while people aged 70 and older represented another 26%. Backup cameras do not eliminate those risks, and Transport Canada still recommends checking mirrors and looking around the vehicle, but the technology provides visibility into an area where vulnerable people can otherwise disappear from view.
Stellantis Has Dealt With a Remarkably Similar Problem Before
The 2026 campaign is particularly notable because Stellantis faced another large rearview-camera software recall just two years earlier. In June 2024, the company recalled approximately 1.16 million vehicles in North America because radio software could prevent the rearview image from displaying. About 1.033 million vehicles were involved in the United States and roughly 126,000 were in Canada. Models from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram were again represented, including Pacifica minivans, Grand Cherokee SUVs, Ram pickups and ProMaster vans.
The remedy in that earlier campaign also relied heavily on software. Stellantis reported at the time that more than 735,000 vehicles had already received an over-the-air update before the full recall process was complete. The similarity does not establish that the 2024 and 2026 defects have the same technical root cause; they concern different vehicle populations and campaigns. What it does show is how software controlling displays has become capable of triggering recalls involving hundreds of thousands—or even more than a million—vehicles without a traditional mechanical component physically breaking.
Canadian Owners Should Check the VIN Rather Than Wait for a Headline
For Canadian drivers, the most useful piece of information is the 17-character vehicle identification number. Transport Canada recommends checking safety recalls and ensuring that manufacturers have current owner contact information, particularly for used vehicles that may have changed hands since they were originally sold. Stellantis’ Mopar recall system also allows vehicles to be checked by VIN. That matters because the published list of models is much broader than the exact population ultimately determined to require the software correction.
Owners also should not assume that the absence of a mailed notice means a vehicle has definitely escaped the campaign. Recall information can appear online before a physical letter arrives, and ownership records are not always perfect after private sales or address changes. Transport Canada advises owners to have safety recalls repaired and notes that manufacturers almost always provide the correction without charge. In this case, the fix is unusually convenient for vehicles able to receive it remotely. The larger lesson remains more traditional: even when a modern safety defect begins in lines of software rather than a broken component, checking and completing the recall still matters.
