Genesis has pushed into a new tier of the luxury market with the GV90, a full-size electric flagship that turns much of the dramatic Neolun concept into a production vehicle. Revealed in San Francisco on August 19, 2026, the GV90 combines a 123.5-kWh battery with dual electric motors producing 490 kW, or roughly 657 horsepower, while Genesis is targeting approximately 500 kilometres of driving range for the seven-seat configuration.
Yet the numbers tell only part of the story. The GV90 introduces an EV architecture developed for Genesis flagships, sophisticated air suspension, rear-wheel steering and an unusually ambitious Neolun version with pillarless coach doors. Inside, swiveling seats, a rising OLED display and features inspired by Korean hospitality signal that Genesis is trying to compete on experience and craftsmanship as aggressively as it competes on power.
Genesis Gives Its Flagship the Group’s Biggest EV Battery Yet
The foundation of the GV90 is a new architecture Genesis calls eMP, developed specifically for the brand’s flagship electric vehicles. Beneath the cabin sits a 123.5-kWh high-voltage battery, which Genesis says is the largest-capacity battery yet installed in a Hyundai Motor Group electric vehicle. The company has also adopted a wireless battery-management system intended to improve packaging efficiency by reducing some of the wiring traditionally required between battery-management components. That matters in a vehicle whose designers are simultaneously trying to maximize passenger room, battery capacity and structural strength.
Power comes from motors at both axles. Genesis lists the front unit at a maximum 240 kW and the rear at 250 kW, producing a combined maximum of 490 kW. That converts to about 657 horsepower, accompanied by 800 Nm, or approximately 590 lb-ft, of torque. Rather than framing the GV90 as an oversized performance SUV, Genesis is emphasizing effortless acceleration and smooth power delivery appropriate for a flagship. Even so, the output makes the GV90 the most powerful electric vehicle Hyundai Motor Group has put into series production at its unveiling.
The 500-KM Range Target Comes With an Important Qualification
Genesis estimates that the seven-seat GV90 will travel approximately 500 kilometres on a full charge, but that figure comes from the company’s internal research and development testing. It is therefore best treated as a target rather than a finalized Canadian efficiency rating. Official NRCan figures will be particularly important because a vehicle this large must balance a substantial battery against the aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance and mass that accompany full-size luxury-SUV dimensions. Canadian specifications may also vary depending on wheels, seating configuration and equipment.
The charging numbers are already more concrete. Genesis says a 350-kW DC fast charger can take the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 22 minutes under suitable conditions. For perspective, 70 percent of a 123.5-kWh pack represents more than 86 kWh of nominal battery capacity, illustrating just how much energy must be transferred during a short highway charging stop. The targeted range would also put the GV90 in broadly competitive territory with several large EVs already sold in Canada, though comparisons should remain cautious until NRCan completes standardized testing. Current Canadian ratings for premium three-row EVs span roughly the high-400-km to mid-500-km range, with some configurations extending beyond that.
657 Horsepower Is Paired With Hardware Designed to Control the Mass
Simply installing powerful motors is relatively easy in a modern premium EV. Making a large electric SUV feel composed through a tight parking garage, a broken urban road and a sweeping highway interchange is considerably harder. Genesis has therefore equipped the GV90 with electronic limited-slip differentials at both axles. The company says its Dual E-LSD system can actively distribute motor output according to available grip, improving traction on wet, snowy or uneven surfaces while helping manage power during faster cornering.
Ride control is equally important. The GV90 uses multi-chamber air springs that can vary stiffness and vehicle height, paired with electronically controlled monotube dampers capable of changing their response as conditions demand. Rear-wheel steering can turn the rear wheels by as much as five degrees, a significant addition on something measuring more than five metres long. Genesis says the system can reduce the turning circle to a level comparable with a midsize vehicle while improving stability at higher speeds. Four-piston monobloc front brake calipers and large brake discs address the other side of the performance equation. The objective is not merely speed, but making a very large vehicle feel less cumbersome in ordinary driving.
Neolun’s Pillarless Coach Doors Made the Jump From Concept to Production
One of the biggest surprises is how much of the 2024 Neolun concept survived production engineering. The standard GV90 uses conventional doors, but the more elaborate GV90 Neolun adopts rear-hinged coach doors and eliminates the permanently visible centre B-pillar. Genesis calls the arrangement the Neolun Arch Gate. When both doors are open, passengers get an unusually broad entrance with no conventional pillar dividing the opening, giving the vehicle a visual connection to ultra-luxury automobiles traditionally associated with chauffeur-driven travel.
Turning that design into a usable production system required more than reversing a pair of hinges. Genesis developed a dual-motion mechanism that moves the rear door outward before rotating it open, allowing it to operate independently of the front door. High-strength steel beams inside the doors effectively assume part of the structural role normally handled by a fixed B-pillar. Genesis also says the passenger compartment uses an integrated hidden reinforcement structure with portions of its frame 1.5 times thicker than conventional vehicle structures. Safety equipment includes 12 airbags, among them what Genesis describes as the world’s first roof airbag designed to deploy across the glass roof during a severe rollover. Independent crash-test results will ultimately provide the more meaningful assessment once production vehicles reach the market.
The Dashboard Changes Shape When the GV90 Stops Moving
Genesis is using the GV90 to debut several technologies rather than simply enlarging the equipment already available in the GV80. The most visible is a 23.6-inch OLED display spanning the central dashboard area. While the vehicle is being driven, it integrates instruments, navigation and entertainment functions in a relatively low profile. Once parked, an electric mechanism raises the display by 90 millimetres, increasing the usable screen presentation to 24.6 inches for video and other multimedia functions. A roughly 25-inch head-up display provides driving information within the windshield area instead of relying on a traditional standalone instrument binnacle.
The software underneath is just as important. Pleos Connect, Hyundai Motor Group’s next-generation infotainment platform, is based on Android Automotive OS and is designed to support downloadable vehicle applications. Genesis is also introducing its Gleo AI conversational assistant. Other details reveal how thoroughly the brand is reconsidering familiar rituals. There is no conventional start button: entering the vehicle, closing the door and pressing the brake prepares the GV90 for driving while the column-mounted selector and other controls move into position. A 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen Premier 3D system with Dolby Atmos reinforces the idea that the cabin is intended to function as entertainment space as much as transportation.
Neolun Turns the Rear Cabin Into an Electric Executive Lounge
The GV90 Neolun is where Genesis moves furthest away from the traditional three-row SUV formula. Its motorized front seats can rotate a full 180 degrees while the vehicle is parked, allowing front and rear occupants to face one another. In the four-seat Executive Suite configuration, the emphasis shifts even more decisively toward rear passengers. Genesis adds integrated tables, a refrigerator, privacy blinds and a partition separating the passenger compartment from the cargo area. It is easy to imagine those features being used during a charging stop, turning downtime into a meeting, meal or quiet break rather than simply time spent sitting in a parked vehicle.
Some of the details are deliberately rooted in Korean design traditions. Real wood veneer flooring in the Executive Suite incorporates radiant heating inspired by Korea’s traditional ondol underfloor-heating system. The Smart Vision Roof uses electronically controlled film that can vary transparency independently across six zones. Elsewhere, buyers can specify genuine stone, natural wood and wool-cashmere trim, while individual seats contain 15 air cells for adjustment and massage functions. Genesis is effectively arguing that an electric flagship should exploit the EV platform’s flat floor and packaging freedom instead of merely recreating the interior of a gasoline-powered luxury SUV.
Its 5.3-Metre Footprint Makes the GV90 a Genuine Full-Size SUV
There is nothing compact about the GV90. Genesis lists overall length at 5,285 millimetres, width at 2,030 millimetres and wheelbase at 3,245 millimetres. Height ranges from 1,815 millimetres on 22-inch wheels to 1,825 millimetres with the 24-inch setup fitted as standard to the Neolun. Those dimensions place the GV90 firmly in full-size luxury territory and explain why packaging technologies such as rear-wheel steering and a flat EV floor play such important roles. It is also considerably larger than the GV80, making the new model a true step above Genesis’ existing SUV range rather than simply an electric alternative.
Genesis has tried to keep that considerable physical presence visually restrained. The exterior is influenced by the shape and simplicity of traditional Korean moon jars, with relatively clean surfaces, a long roof and minimal decorative clutter. The brand’s signature Two-Line lighting remains prominent, while the rear avoids even a conventional roof spoiler. Customers are expected to have 16 exterior colours to choose from, including three matte finishes, and the Neolun carries distinctive 24-inch forged wheels. The result is an interesting contrast: enormous dimensions and serious power wrapped in design that deliberately avoids some of the visual aggression common among flagship SUVs.
Canadian Buyers Will Have to Wait for the Most Important Numbers
The production debut answers many technical questions, but Canadian shoppers still lack two pieces of information capable of determining how significant the GV90 ultimately becomes: its price and certified driving range. Canadian automotive reports expect the GV90 to reach North America during 2027, but Genesis had not announced final Canadian pricing at the time of the unveiling. The approximately 500-km range figure also remains an internal estimate, with the official NRCan rating still to come closer to launch.
Those unanswered questions matter because the GV90 is entering a much more competitive large-EV market than Genesis would have faced only a few years ago. Buyers can already consider three-row models from brands including Cadillac, Volvo, Lucid, Rivian, Hyundai and Kia, while established German luxury manufacturers remain important rivals at the premium end. Genesis is responding by offering something more distinctive than another large battery and three rows of seats. The combination of 657 horsepower, fast charging, rear-wheel steering, pillarless coach doors and an unusually elaborate passenger compartment makes the GV90 a statement about where the decade-old luxury brand now believes it belongs. Whether Canadian buyers agree will depend heavily on the final price attached to that ambition.
