Toyota has put the 2027 bZ on sale across Canada with a starting MSRP of $45,985, sharpening competition in a market where electric-vehicle makers are increasingly fighting over price, range and charging convenience. One important distinction sits behind the headline numbers: the $45,985 front-wheel-drive XLE is rated for up to 380 kilometres, while the longer-range XLE AWD delivers up to 468 kilometres and starts at $53,405.
That distinction does not diminish the scale of Toyota’s upgrade. The bZ now combines substantially stronger AWD performance, native North American Charging System compatibility, battery preconditioning and a 14-inch multimedia display with broader nationwide availability. With federal incentives again targeting lower-priced EVs and competitors pushing aggressively into the same territory, Toyota is entering a much tougher affordability contest than the one its first bZ4X faced.
Toyota Gets the Starting Price Below $46,000
At $45,985 before freight, fees and taxes, the 2027 bZ XLE lands in a strategically important part of Canada’s EV market. Toyota calculates an estimated vehicle price of $49,067 when freight, pre-delivery inspection, air-conditioning charges and maximum dealer and other fees are included. The company lists the XLE AWD at $53,405 and the Limited AWD at $61,685, making the front-drive XLE the clear affordability play.
The entry price has barely moved compared with the previous model year. Toyota priced the 2026 bZ XLE FWD at $45,990, meaning the new model starts just $5 lower. That suggests Toyota is not relying on a dramatic headline discount. Instead, the company is attempting to keep its electric crossover around a psychologically important mid-$40,000 price while maintaining a three-grade lineup. For households shopping against increasingly affordable rivals, however, a few thousand dollars can now significantly change the comparison.
The 468-Km Number Belongs to the AWD Model
Toyota’s longest-range configuration is the XLE AWD, not the $45,985 entry model. Its 77-kWh lithium-ion battery supports a manufacturer-estimated range of up to 468 kilometres, while the smaller 57.7-kWh battery in the front-wheel-drive XLE is rated for up to 380 kilometres. The higher-spec Limited AWD also uses the 77-kWh battery but is rated somewhat lower because of its configuration and equipment.
The improvement is especially noticeable when the current AWD model is compared with the older bZ4X. Toyota rated the outgoing AWD version at up to 367 kilometres before increasing that figure to 468 kilometres with the redesigned bZ powertrain—an improvement the company described as roughly 25%. For a driver routinely travelling between cities rather than simply commuting across town, another 100 kilometres of rated range can materially change how often public charging enters the trip plan.
AWD Performance Has Become a Bigger Part of the Pitch
Range is only part of Toyota’s overhaul. The AWD bZ produces 338 system horsepower, compared with 214 horsepower in the earlier AWD bZ4X. Toyota achieved the increase partly through upgraded compact eAxles using silicon-carbide semiconductor technology. That turns the AWD versions into substantially more powerful vehicles than their predecessors rather than simply adding a second driven axle for winter traction.
Toyota is also giving the XLE AWD equipment intended for poor surfaces and challenging weather. X-Mode with Grip Control, Multi-Terrain Select, Downhill Assist and Crawl Control are included, along with roof rails. Toyota previously specified a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds for the revised AWD bZ platform. For Canadian shoppers, those capabilities broaden the vehicle’s appeal beyond urban EV use. A crossover that can handle snowy cottage roads, family cargo and light towing makes a different argument than one designed primarily around efficient commuting.
NACS Charging Removes a Major Ownership Friction Point
One of the bZ’s most consequential changes is its native North American Charging System port. Toyota says the connection gives the vehicle access to most high-speed charging stations across North America. Under ideal conditions, DC fast charging can take the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Plug & Charge capability can also automate compatible charger identification and billing instead of requiring a separate payment process every time.
Toyota has gone further for 2027 by supplying CCS and J1772 adapters with every bZ. That matters because Canadian charging infrastructure remains a mixture of connector standards. Rather than forcing an owner to choose between old and new networks, the adapters give the bZ considerably more flexibility. For someone making a winter highway trip with children or luggage aboard, the practical value is straightforward: having more usable charging locations can be just as reassuring as adding another few kilometres to the rated range.
Toyota Has Paid More Attention to Canadian Winter Charging
Cold temperatures remain one of the most scrutinized parts of electric-vehicle ownership in Canada, and Toyota has equipped the bZ accordingly. Battery preconditioning is designed to bring the pack closer to an appropriate temperature before a DC fast-charging session. The system can work with navigation when a fast charger is selected as the destination, helping the battery arrive in a condition better suited to accepting a high charging rate.
Toyota also uses a battery thermal-management system and a heat pump for cabin heating and cooling. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are standard, while higher grades add equipment such as rear-seat heating and ventilated front seats. None of these technologies can eliminate winter-related range losses, and Toyota explicitly notes that actual range and charging times depend on weather and other conditions. They can, however, make the difference between an EV designed around laboratory numbers and one prepared for a February morning in Canada.
The Interior Now Looks More Like a Modern $45,000-Plus EV
Toyota has made the 14-inch Toyota Multimedia touchscreen standard throughout the bZ lineup, alongside wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The cabin also includes a seven-inch digital driver display, customizable 64-colour ambient lighting and two wireless smartphone charging docks. Three USB charging ports are fitted, while connected services provide functions ranging from remote vehicle controls to navigation and charging information.
Practicality remains important because the bZ competes in a crossover segment where many vehicles serve as a household’s only car. Toyota lists 784 litres of cargo capacity behind the second row and provides 60/40 split-folding rear seats. The cabin accommodates five occupants, while the XLE includes heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and SofTex/fabric upholstery. These details may sound less dramatic than horsepower or battery size, but families often discover that cargo space, phone charging and comfortable daily controls matter more frequently than maximum acceleration.
Toyota Is Making Safety Equipment Part of the Standard-Feature Argument
Every 2027 bZ includes Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Toyota’s active-safety suite incorporates technologies such as a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, lane-tracing assistance, road-sign assistance and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Assist are also standard, alongside eight airbags and a backup camera.
The Limited AWD adds another layer of technology, including Advanced Park, a panoramic-view monitor, a digital rear-view mirror, Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Change Assist. It also receives 20-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof, JBL audio and heated and ventilated power front seats. That equipment helps explain why the Limited climbs to a $61,685 MSRP. Toyota therefore faces a familiar challenge: the base model must attract price-conscious EV shoppers, while the expensive AWD versions need enough equipment and capability to justify moving into territory occupied by increasingly sophisticated competitors.
Canada’s New EV Incentive Rules Make the $50,000 Line Important
The federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program can provide eligible buyers with up to $5,000 toward a qualifying battery-electric vehicle in 2026. Unlike the previous federal system, eligibility for most imported vehicles centres on a final transaction value of no more than $50,000. Transport Canada defines that value according to specific included and excluded charges, so it is not identical to a manufacturer’s advertised all-in vehicle price.
That makes the bZ XLE’s $45,985 MSRP particularly significant. Transport Canada’s current eligibility list identifies the 2026 bZ XLE FWD for the full 2026 battery-electric incentive. At the time of verification, the newly announced 2027 bZ had not yet appeared on that list. Transport Canada notes, however, that absence from the published list does not automatically make a vehicle ineligible if the transaction meets program requirements. Buyers therefore need to verify the specific 2027 transaction rather than assuming the rebate solely from MSRP.
Chevrolet and Nissan Are Turning Affordability Into a Real Fight
Toyota no longer has the lower end of the electric-crossover market to itself. Nissan advertises the redesigned 2026 LEAF from $44,998 and rates the LEAF S+ for up to 488 kilometres from its 75-kWh battery. Chevrolet, meanwhile, lists the 2027 Bolt LT at a $39,999 MSRP with up to 422 kilometres of estimated range, creating an especially aggressive benchmark for drivers who prioritize purchase price over size or AWD capability.
GM has been pushing even harder with incentives. In late July, it advertised the Bolt LT from $34,995 when a temporary $3,800 manufacturer cash rebate and the potential $5,000 federal EV incentive were included for eligible customers. The manufacturer rebate was advertised through August 31, 2026. Those figures are not directly comparable with Toyota’s MSRP, but they demonstrate the pressure facing every automaker. A Canadian EV shopper can increasingly compare vehicles based on actual monthly cost and usable range rather than simply deciding whether an EV is affordable at all.
Canada’s EV Market Is Growing Again, but Winning Buyers Is Getting Harder
Canada registered 43,113 new zero-emission vehicles in the first quarter of 2026, representing 10.8% of all new motor-vehicle registrations. Statistics Canada reported that ZEV registrations rose 15.8% from the first quarter of 2025 even as overall new-vehicle registrations declined. The recovery gives manufacturers a reason to compete aggressively, but it also means buyers now have enough alternatives to punish models that appear weak on price, range or charging.
Toyota is approaching that battle differently from companies built primarily around battery-electric vehicles. The company says the bZ is one of three battery-electric models it offers Canadians alongside 15 hybrids and two plug-in hybrids, reflecting its broader multi-powertrain strategy. The 2027 bZ nevertheless shows how quickly expectations have moved. A Toyota EV with 468 kilometres of available AWD range, 338 horsepower, native NACS charging and a sub-$46,000 entry MSRP would once have sounded unusually aggressive. In 2026, it is the price of remaining competitive.
