BMW is entering the next era of the 3 Series without abandoning one of the ingredients that helped define its performance sedans. The new M350 xDrive will sit at the top of the combustion-powered range with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance and a BMW-quoted combined output of 326 kW, or 443 hp in its global specifications.
Yet the bigger surprise may arrive after some cars have already reached customers. BMW plans to introduce a feature called Drift Moment during 2027, allowing the normally all-wheel-drive M350 to send engine power entirely to the rear wheels. Cars delivered before the feature becomes available are expected to receive it through BMW’s Remote Software Upgrade system. It is an unusually playful addition at a time when performance sedans are becoming increasingly electrified and software-driven.
The Straight-Six Survives Into Another 3 Series Generation
The M350 xDrive will be the only combustion-powered version of the new 3 Series offered with a six-cylinder engine. BMW has confirmed a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six working with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and standard xDrive all-wheel drive. Combined output is listed at 326 kW/443 hp, while maximum torque stands at 580 Nm, or 428 lb-ft.
There is a measurement detail worth noting. BMW’s global material describes the output as 443 hp, while 326 kW converts to roughly 437 U.S. mechanical horsepower; some European publications therefore describe the figure as 443 PS. Either way, the important part is the continued presence of a large six-cylinder engine in BMW’s midsize performance sedan. That separates the M350 from many increasingly downsized rivals and preserves a mechanical link with decades of sporting 3 Series models even as electrification becomes more prominent elsewhere in BMW’s range.
The M350 Pushes Closer to Full-M Performance
BMW says the M350 xDrive will accelerate from zero to 100 km/h, or 62 mph, in 4.1 seconds and reach an electronically limited 250 km/h, or 155 mph. Those figures remain provisional because the prototypes are still completing development testing. The new car nevertheless represents a substantial step up from the M Performance 3 Series that buyers know today.
For context, BMW’s current U.S.-market M340i produces 386 hp from its inline-six and mild-hybrid system. The 2027 M3 range currently starts at 473 hp in BMW’s U.S. specifications, illustrating just how narrow the performance gap between the everyday M Performance sedan and the entry-level full M car has become. Prototype testers have also described the new engine as strong and responsive rather than merely powerful on paper. The result is important because the M350 still needs to function as a daily luxury sedan. Its job is not simply to chase an M3 around a circuit, but to offer much of that urgency without demanding the same compromises.
Drift Moment Can Turn xDrive Into Rear-Wheel Drive
The headline feature is called Drift Moment. Despite the M350 being sold with xDrive all-wheel drive as standard, activating the function through the central display will direct the engine’s drive entirely to the rear wheels. BMW says it works with M-specific control of the multidisc clutch and requires the Dynamic Stability Control system to be switched off.
That makes the feature more significant than an ordinary stability-control setting that simply allows greater slip. BMW is effectively using the existing all-wheel-drive hardware to create a selectable rear-drive experience. Prototype testing has already demonstrated that the normal xDrive system can become strongly rear-biased in its sportier settings, but the front axle remains involved when necessary. Drift Moment goes a step further by removing engine drive from the front wheels altogether. BMW says the capability had previously been associated with higher-performance BMW M models. Its arrival in an M Performance 3 Series shows how software and electronically controlled drivetrain hardware are increasingly blurring the traditional distinction between fixed AWD and RWD layouts.
The Most Interesting Feature Will Arrive After the Car
Drift Moment is unusual for another reason: BMW does not plan to have it ready when the earliest M350s reach customers. The company says the function will become available sometime during 2027. M350s delivered beforehand will then receive activation through BMW Remote Software Upgrade, its over-the-air updating system.
That creates a distinctly modern performance-car scenario. A buyer could take delivery of an all-wheel-drive sports sedan and later wake up to a factory-supported drivetrain capability that was physically possible all along but not initially enabled. It also demonstrates how OTA technology is moving beyond navigation updates and infotainment fixes. Software increasingly determines how modern vehicles accelerate, distribute torque and respond to driver inputs. BMW has not announced a precise release date for Drift Moment, and the company has not said that every function of this type will necessarily be downloadable in the future. Still, the M350 provides a clear example of meaningful driving characteristics being added after production rather than frozen permanently at the factory gate.
BMW Has Reworked the Chassis, Not Just the Engine
Extra horsepower would accomplish little if the underlying 3 Series could not use it effectively. BMW says the next-generation car has a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, wider front and rear tracks and close to balanced weight distribution between its axles. The suspension layout combines a double-joint spring-strut front axle with a five-link arrangement at the rear.
The M350 receives additional attention. BMW has increased torsional and vertical stiffness and fitted model-specific chassis tuning, adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential and variable sport steering as standard. Across the wider 3 Series range, newly developed lift-related dampers are part of the standard suspension, while upgraded integrated braking and revised steering geometry are intended to improve precision. Buyers can also specify 20-inch performance tires measuring 245/35 at the front and 275/30 at the rear. Early prototype drives suggest the changes have not simply produced a stiffer car; testers have reported improved composure and ride quality alongside sharper responses, an important balance for a sedan expected to handle commuting as comfortably as fast-road driving.
The Driving Stack Coordinates the Hardware Behind the Scenes
One of the less visible changes may ultimately matter as much as the engine. BMW calls its new integrated hardware-and-software control architecture the Driving Stack. In combustion-powered 3 Series models, the system coordinates driving-related functions rather than allowing individual components such as the all-wheel-drive system, stability control and differential to operate as isolated pieces.
BMW describes its transverse-dynamics management as a way of bundling the systems responsible for agility and vehicle control. Engineers have been attempting to achieve some of the fast, coordinated responses possible in electric vehicles, where motors can alter torque almost instantaneously. Independent reporting from prototype testing says the combustion system uses inputs from a six-dimensional motion sensor together with controllable components including the brakes, xDrive clutch and rear differential. The objective is not simply faster computing for its own sake. When steering, suspension, braking and torque distribution respond as one system, a heavy modern sedan can feel more predictable and natural. Drift Moment is the dramatic demonstration, but the same underlying software should operate during ordinary driving every day.
Neue Klasse Styling Reaches the Gas-Powered 3 Series Too
BMW is deliberately making the combustion 3 Series and electric i3 look like members of the same generation rather than cars from two different eras. The company says both use its Neue Klasse design language, including a new interpretation of BMW’s familiar four-eyed front graphic. Long wheelbases, short overhangs and relatively clean exterior surfacing remain important elements of the new proportions.
There are still physical differences dictated by the powertrains. A combustion engine requires different packaging from an electric battery and motor system, and prototype observers have noted the M350’s more traditional long-hood profile. The performance model also brings more aggressive air intakes and visible quad exhaust outlets. Inside, BMW Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X carry the Neue Klasse digital approach into the combustion car. That strategy is significant: BMW is not presenting gasoline models as technological leftovers beside its new EVs. Instead, the company is attempting to give both powertrain families a shared design and digital identity while allowing their mechanical layouts to provide noticeably different driving experiences.
Mild-Hybrid Technology Is Part of the Combustion Strategy
The M350 is not simply a traditional gasoline six-cylinder placed inside a new body. BMW’s 48-volt mild-hybrid technology assists the combustion engine, and the company says the same basic electrification approach will be used with the new 3 Series’ four-cylinder engines. The system allows electrical assistance without turning the car into a plug-in hybrid.
BMW is also combining the electrical system with a broader group of efficiency measures. The upcoming 3 Series incorporates active air-flap control, an Efficient driving mode and an Efficiency Coach intended to encourage lower-energy driving. Those technologies matter because BMW is trying to preserve high-output combustion options while tightening the integration between conventional engines and electrical systems. Exact fuel-consumption and CO2 figures remain unavailable, however. BMW explicitly states that the development vehicles do not yet have finalized WLTP consumption data. That makes any definitive efficiency comparison premature. What can be said is that the M350’s straight-six survives through electrification rather than by ignoring it: the 48-volt architecture contributes to the combined powertrain while supporting BMW’s wider efficiency strategy.
The Rivalry Looks Different When BMW Still Has Six Cylinders
The M350 enters a performance-sedan segment in which cylinder count no longer follows the old rules. Mercedes-AMG’s current C43, for example, produces 416 hp from a handcrafted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with hybrid assistance and an electrically assisted turbocharger. Mercedes lists its U.S. 0–60 mph time at 4.3 seconds and equips it with AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
BMW is taking a noticeably different route. Instead of replacing its six with a highly boosted four-cylinder, it has retained the 3.0-liter inline-six while adding mild-hybrid assistance and increasingly sophisticated software control. The distinction is not automatically proof that one engineering philosophy is superior; Mercedes extracts remarkable output from half as many cylinders. It does, however, give the BMW a clear identity in a segment where buyers often care about engine character as much as acceleration numbers. For customers who associate a fast 3 Series with the smoothness and sound of an inline-six, the M350’s configuration may become one of its strongest selling points.
Fifty Years of 3 Series History Make This Transition Important
The significance of the M350 becomes clearer when viewed against the 3 Series’ history. BMW launched the nameplate in 1975, and the company says more than 20 million 3 Series vehicles have been sold worldwide over the ensuing five decades. Six-cylinder engines joined the first generation in 1977 with the 323i, which produced 143 hp and required nine seconds to reach 100 km/h. The new M350’s provisional 4.1-second figure shows how dramatically the performance envelope has shifted.
Yet several questions remain before buyers can make a complete judgment. BMW has not published finalized WLTP fuel-economy figures for the development cars, Drift Moment has no specific 2027 activation date, and pricing and availability will vary by market. Production is officially scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026. What is already clear is the direction: BMW is pairing one of its most traditional engine configurations with software-defined chassis technology, OTA functionality and Neue Klasse-era electronics. Rather than choosing between its past and its digital future, the M350 tries to package both into the same sedan.
