B.C. Rare-Earth Project Reports 6.15% Grade as EV-Magnet Supply Becomes a Strategic Auto Issue

A drilling result from northern British Columbia is arriving at a moment when obscure elements buried in rock have become a surprisingly important part of the global automotive conversation. Defense Metals says an infill hole at its Wicheeda rare-earth project returned 2.86% total rare earth oxide over 65 metres, including a higher-grade 20.3-metre interval averaging 6.15%.

The number matters, but so does the timing. Rare-earth magnets sit inside electric motors and numerous vehicle components, while China remains overwhelmingly dominant in refining and magnet manufacturing. Recent export restrictions demonstrated how quickly shortages can reach factory floors. Wicheeda is still a development-stage project rather than a producing mine, yet its latest drilling gives Canada another data point in a much larger effort to build a rare-earth supply chain that does not depend on a single country.

The 6.15% Result Comes From a High-Grade Interval

Defense Metals reported the result from drill hole WI26-96, which encountered 65 metres grading 2.86% total rare earth oxide, or TREO. Within that broader mineralized section was a substantially richer 20.3-metre interval averaging 6.15% TREO. That distinction is important: 6.15% is not the average grade of the Wicheeda deposit or even of the entire 65-metre intersection. It represents a higher-grade zone contained within the larger interval.

The result was part of assays released for the first 11 holes from the company’s spring 2026 campaign. Those holes totalled 1,633 metres, and Defense Metals said all 11 intersected significant rare-earth mineralization within the pit limits established by Wicheeda’s 2025 preliminary feasibility study. Other results added scale to the picture. WI26-93 returned 1.70% TREO over 184.4 metres, including 2.52% over 56.7 metres, while WI26-100 returned 1.55% over 148.7 metres, including 2.40% across 84.6 metres.

This Is Infill Drilling, Not a Brand-New Discovery

The latest drilling is significant for a different reason than the headline grade might initially suggest. Wicheeda is already an established rare-earth deposit with a mineral resource, mineral reserves and a preliminary feasibility study. Much of the 2026 program was designed to fill gaps in the geological model and potentially move material currently classified as inferred into higher-confidence categories. That can become important as a project moves toward more detailed engineering, financing and eventual construction decisions.

Defense Metals completed 31 core holes totalling 5,345 metres during its 2026 program. Twenty holes, covering 3,136 metres, were focused on resource upgrades and infill drilling. Another seven holes were dedicated to pit-slope geotechnical work and four to waste-rock geochemistry. In other words, the campaign is increasingly about engineering and de-risking rather than simply proving rare earths exist. Some assays were still outstanding when the August 31 results were released, leaving further geological information to come.

Wicheeda Already Has a Substantial Resource Base

The project’s existing 2025 mineral resource provides context for the new drilling. Defense Metals reports 29.2 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources averaging 2.27% TREO, along with 5.5 million tonnes of inferred resources averaging 1.42%. The property sits roughly 80 kilometres northeast of Prince George and covers about 11,800 hectares, placing it in a region with established forestry, mining and transportation infrastructure.

The 2025 preliminary feasibility study went further, outlining a 15-year open-pit operation feeding a 5,000-tonne-per-day flotation concentrator. Defense Metals estimated a pre-tax net present value of roughly US$1.8 billion and an after-tax NPV of about US$1.0 billion at an 8% discount rate, with initial capital expenditure estimated at US$1.44 billion. Those figures remain projections rather than guaranteed outcomes. Commodity prices, financing conditions, engineering changes, permitting requirements and construction costs can all alter project economics before a mine reaches production.

The Automotive Importance Is Mostly About Magnets

Rare earths are sometimes discussed alongside lithium, nickel and graphite as though they all play the same role in an electric vehicle. They do not. Lithium and graphite are central to batteries, while several rare-earth elements are particularly valuable because they can be turned into exceptionally powerful permanent magnets. Neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium are among the important magnet materials used in high-performance applications.

Canada’s federal government estimates that a typical EV can contain roughly one to two kilograms of neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnets in its motor. Their high magnetic strength allows manufacturers to build compact, efficient motors with strong power density. Magnets also appear elsewhere in vehicles, including smaller electric motors, sensors and electronic systems. That means rare-earth security is not exclusively an EV issue. The 2025 supply disruption demonstrated that conventional vehicles and their component suppliers can also be affected when access to specialty magnets suddenly tightens.

China’s Dominance Turned a Supply Risk Into a Factory Problem

The strategic concern became difficult for automakers to ignore in 2025. The International Energy Agency estimates China accounted for about 60% of global mining of the four main magnet rare earths in 2024, but its dominance increased dramatically farther downstream. China represented roughly 91% of refined production and around 94% of sintered permanent-magnet manufacturing. That concentration means discovering an orebody elsewhere does not automatically produce an independent supply chain.

China introduced export controls on seven heavy rare-earth elements and related products in April 2025. Magnet shipments subsequently fell sharply. European suppliers reported production-line shutdowns, while automakers and parts companies scrambled for licences and alternative inventory. Ford temporarily stopped Explorer production in Chicago, and Suzuki suspended Swift production amid the broader shortage. The episode demonstrated how relatively small quantities of specialized materials can interrupt manufacturing operations worth billions of dollars. For automakers, rare earths had moved from procurement detail to strategic risk.

The Long-Term Supply Problem Extends Beyond Mining

Building more mines is only one piece of the solution. Rare-earth ore must be concentrated, chemically processed, separated into individual oxides, converted into metals and alloys, and ultimately manufactured into magnets. The IEA’s 2026 outlook warns that development outside dominant suppliers remains particularly thin in these middle and downstream stages. By 2035, announced rare-earth mining projects outside the leading producer could considerably outpace planned refining, separation and magnet capacity.

That distinction matters for Wicheeda. A Canadian deposit can contribute to supply diversification only if its material can progress through commercially competitive processing routes and ultimately reach manufacturers. Ottawa identifies permanent magnets as a priority value chain under Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy, acknowledging that the country has mineral potential but significant processing gaps. The challenge is therefore bigger than getting rare-earth-bearing rock out of the ground. Canada needs technical capability, infrastructure, customers and capital across multiple stages before domestic resources translate into genuinely independent automotive supply.

Ottawa Is Already Supporting Infrastructure Around Wicheeda

The federal government has begun directing money toward some of the infrastructure required for Wicheeda’s development. In 2026, Natural Resources Canada conditionally approved up to approximately C$1.88 million to advance planning for a new 60-kilometre transmission line capable of providing 35 megawatts of electricity from the BC Hydro grid. The work also includes design studies for improvements to a roughly 43-kilometre forest-service road linking the project with Highway 97.

That may seem modest beside the project’s projected billion-dollar capital cost, but electricity and transportation can determine whether remote mineral deposits are commercially viable. Earlier federal support also funded feasibility work involving power infrastructure, environmental studies, archaeology and Indigenous engagement. The McLeod Lake Indian Band is a minority equity participant and has a co-design relationship with Defense Metals. Federal funding announced in January additionally supports training intended to help the community assess potential fish-habitat impacts associated with the proposed transmission corridor.

Processing Has Become the Next Major Test

Defense Metals is simultaneously working on the metallurgical side of the project. A pilot flotation program began at SGS Canada’s Lakefield facility in Ontario in May 2026. The work is intended to confirm previous test results, produce concentrate for subsequent hydrometallurgical testing and generate engineering information needed for more advanced feasibility studies. Successful processing is particularly important in rare earths because attractive grades alone do not guarantee economical recovery and separation.

Ottawa has also invited Defense Metals to submit a full proposal under federal critical-minerals programs after reviewing an expression of interest seeking up to C$32 million for further concentrator, hydrometallurgical and solvent-extraction work. Importantly, that invitation is not a funding commitment. It is another evaluation stage. Still, the focus illustrates Canada’s strategic problem clearly: having rare earths in Canadian ground is of limited value to automakers if the country remains dependent on offshore facilities to turn them into usable separated materials.

Hanwha Has Put a Commercial Angle on the Project

Wicheeda’s development story also acquired an industrial partner in May when Defense Metals signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Corporation. The parties said they would explore a potential long-term supply arrangement for rare-earth materials from Wicheeda, along with possible investment opportunities. Because the agreement is non-binding, it should not be treated as a guaranteed offtake contract or financing commitment.

Even so, such discussions matter for emerging critical-minerals projects. Potential lenders and governments increasingly want evidence that future mines are connected to credible downstream demand rather than being built entirely on optimistic commodity-price assumptions. Hanwha operates across shipbuilding, industrial and defence-related sectors where secure access to specialty materials has become increasingly important. For Defense Metals, turning preliminary commercial relationships into binding offtake agreements could eventually become as important as another strong drill hole when the company seeks financing for construction.

A Strong Drill Hole Does Not Remove the Remaining Risks

The 6.15% interval strengthens Wicheeda’s geological story, but the path from core sample to commercial magnet supply remains long. Remaining assays must be incorporated into an updated understanding of the deposit, while feasibility engineering, metallurgy, environmental assessment, Indigenous engagement, permitting and financing all have to advance. A project carrying an estimated initial capital requirement above US$1 billion also needs confidence that rare-earth prices and customer demand can support the investment through construction and operation.

That is why Wicheeda’s significance is larger than one assay and smaller than an immediate solution to North America’s rare-earth dependence. The deposit is not producing magnets today, and a Canadian mine by itself would not eliminate China’s downstream advantage. What it represents is an increasingly advanced possible source of feedstock within a broader Western effort to build mining, processing and magnet capacity together. As automakers learned during the 2025 shortages, that supply-chain resilience is becoming valuable even when the minerals involved make up only a tiny portion of a vehicle’s total cost.
