Tesla Shuts Hamilton’s 20-Stall Supercharger as 16-Stall V4 Replacement Goes Up

Hamilton’s long-running Tesla charging hub is undergoing a significant reset. The 20-stall Supercharger at Lime Ridge, listed by Tesla at up to 150 kW, has been decommissioned as construction begins on a replacement with 16 V4 charging stalls. The change means four fewer plugs on paper, but it also moves the location from older V2 hardware toward Tesla’s latest generation of charging infrastructure.

The timing matters because Lime Ridge has grown into much more than a place to plug in a car. Tesla operates a major showroom and service centre at the property, while the land occupied by the older chargers is being cleared for a planned transit terminal. For Hamilton-area EV drivers, that combination creates an unusual trade-off: a temporary loss of familiar charging capacity in exchange for a smaller but substantially more modern station.

Hamilton’s 20-Stall V2 Station Reaches the End of the Road

Tesla’s Hamilton Supercharger at 999 Upper Wentworth Street had been a substantial piece of local charging infrastructure. Tesla’s own location information identified the Lime Ridge installation as having 20 Superchargers capable of delivering up to 150 kW. Recent reporting on the redevelopment describes those chargers as V2 equipment, a generation that dates from an earlier phase of Tesla’s network expansion. The site had become familiar to owners who could combine charging with shopping, errands or a visit to Tesla’s growing operation at the mall.

That familiarity now comes with disruption. Tesla has decommissioned the 20-stall installation while construction moves ahead on a new 16-stall V4 facility at Lime Ridge. Drivers therefore should not interpret the construction barriers as routine maintenance on the existing chargers. This is a replacement project. Once complete, the Hamilton site will have four fewer stalls than the installation it replaces, a 20% reduction in the raw stall count. The more important question, however, is whether newer technology and a different layout can compensate for having fewer physical plugs.

Four Fewer Stalls Does Not Necessarily Mean Less Useful Capacity

The easiest number to notice is the drop from 20 charging stalls to 16. Yet counting plugs alone does not capture the technological difference between the two installations. Tesla listed the outgoing Hamilton Supercharger at a maximum of 150 kW. By comparison, the company says its V4 Superchargers in North America can provide Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y vehicles with charging rates of up to 250 kW under suitable conditions. Cybertruck can reach as high as 325 kW at V4 Superchargers.

Real-world charging speeds will still depend on the vehicle, battery temperature, state of charge and other conditions. A vehicle capable of accepting only a lower rate will not suddenly charge at 250 or 325 kW simply because the dispenser is newer. Still, the upgrade raises Hamilton’s technical ceiling considerably. For a driver arriving with a warm battery at a low state of charge, the difference between an older 150-kW station and modern high-power equipment can translate into a shorter stop, potentially allowing each stall to serve more vehicles over a busy day.

V4 Hardware Is Designed for a Much Broader EV Population

Perhaps the most important physical change is something less dramatic than the power rating: cable length. Tesla says every V4 Supercharger uses a longer charging cable, specifically designed to provide easier access for different electric vehicles. That matters because charging-port positions vary widely. Tesla traditionally located charge ports toward the rear-left corner of its vehicles, while competing manufacturers place ports near front fenders, rear quarters and other locations. Shorter cables can force some non-Tesla EVs to park awkwardly or occupy a neighbouring space.

The broader EV market is increasingly relevant to Tesla’s network. Tesla Canada says selected Superchargers are accessible to non-Tesla vehicles equipped with NACS ports or approved NACS DC adapters. Its current compatibility list includes more than 20 automotive brands or groups, including Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, Rivian, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota and Stellantis. A modernized Hamilton site could therefore matter well beyond Tesla ownership, provided the location is enabled for those vehicles. V4’s physical design makes that kind of mixed-brand use much easier to accommodate.

The Shutdown Creates a Short-Term Charging Hole in Hamilton

Even a worthwhile upgrade can be inconvenient while it is being built. Tesla’s Canadian location directory identifies the Lime Ridge address as its Hamilton Supercharger location, making the shutdown particularly noticeable for drivers who structured their routines around it. A commuter without reliable home charging, a rideshare driver covering substantial daily mileage or a traveller entering Hamilton with a depleted battery cannot benefit from the future V4 installation until it is actually energized.

Tesla owners do have alternatives outside the city. The company lists a 16-stall Supercharger at Burlington’s Mapleview Centre, with charging up to 150 kW, and an eight-stall site in Grimsby at the Casablanca Hotel, also rated at up to 150 kW. Farther east, Tesla has a 20-stall Oakville site capable of up to 325 kW. Those locations keep the regional network functioning, but they are not substitutes for a conveniently placed Hamilton station for every trip. The temporary inconvenience illustrates why charging coverage depends on geographic redundancy, not simply the total number of chargers across a province.

The Replacement Was Foreshadowed by Changes at Lime Ridge

The old Supercharger’s disappearance was not entirely unexpected. When Tesla’s large Hamilton service operation opened at Lime Ridge in late 2024, reporting on the project already noted that development plans could eventually displace the 20-stall charging station. The land occupied by the former chargers is now expected to be redeveloped for the new Lime Ridge Transit Terminal. In other words, Tesla is not merely replacing old hardware because faster equipment became available; the surrounding property itself is changing.

That makes the project an example of the competing demands increasingly placed on major urban parking lots. Mall properties once dominated by conventional retail parking are being asked to support transit, EV charging, automotive service, housing and other uses. At Lime Ridge, the transformation is particularly visible. A section of property that served Tesla drivers for years is being repurposed for public transportation, while Tesla is rebuilding charging capacity elsewhere at the same destination. The outcome shows how EV infrastructure sometimes has to move even when demand for it is growing rather than disappearing.

Lime Ridge Has Become a Major Tesla Base, Not Just a Charging Stop

Tesla’s presence at Lime Ridge expanded dramatically before the latest charger project. Cadillac Fairview announced in December 2024 that the property had welcomed what it described at the time as Canada’s largest Tesla showroom and service centre. Industry reporting put the operation at roughly 60,000 square feet, with much of the space devoted to service and 22 vehicle lifts. That turned the Hamilton property into a regional destination for owners needing everything from routine maintenance to more extensive work.

The charging infrastructure naturally complements that operation. A customer bringing a vehicle in for service may need charging before or after an appointment, while shoppers and travellers create an entirely separate stream of demand. Cadillac Fairview said at the centre’s opening that the property had seven new Tesla Superchargers onsite in addition to the separate 20-stall installation in a nearby overflow area. The new 16-stall V4 project therefore fits into a much larger Tesla footprint. Hamilton has evolved from merely hosting chargers to supporting sales, service and charging functions in one retail complex.

Ontario’s EV Market Makes Modern Charging Capacity Increasingly Important

The Hamilton rebuild comes at a time when Canadian EV demand is showing renewed movement after a difficult 2025. Statistics Canada reported 43,113 new zero-emission vehicle registrations nationally in the first quarter of 2026, representing 10.8% of all new vehicle registrations. That was a 15.8% increase from the first quarter of 2025. Ontario was among the provinces recording year-over-year growth, with its new ZEV registrations rising 5%.

Those figures help explain why seemingly local charging projects deserve attention. Canada already has a substantial population of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and every new sales cycle adds vehicles that may depend on public charging during longer trips. Ottawa is also putting substantial money behind the network. Natural Resources Canada said in February 2026 that more than 30,000 EV chargers had already been installed across the country through federal infrastructure efforts, while announcing $84.4 million for projects expected to install more than 8,000 additional chargers. Private networks such as Tesla’s are developing alongside that publicly supported expansion.

Hamilton Shows Where Tesla’s Supercharger Network Is Headed

The Hamilton project is part of a wider shift toward newer, faster and more flexible Tesla charging sites. Tesla says its global Supercharger network has surpassed 80,000 stalls, while its Canadian Supercharger information advertises maximum charging rates reaching 325 kW. Ontario already provides examples of the newer approach: a Beamsville station opened with 20 V4 stalls capable of up to 325 kW, while Tesla’s current locator lists a 20-stall Oakville station at up to 325 kW.

Hamilton’s replacement therefore appears less like an isolated equipment upgrade and more like another step in the modernization of an aging charging network. The old installation was built for a period when Superchargers primarily served Tesla vehicles and 150 kW was considered genuinely rapid charging. The new environment is different. More automakers have adopted NACS, charging speeds have risen, larger battery packs are common and public fast chargers increasingly need to accommodate vehicles with very different dimensions and port locations. Hamilton is losing four stalls, but the 16 replacing them are being built for that broader future.

What Drivers Should Watch as Construction Continues

The most important milestone will be activation, not simply the appearance of completed charging posts. Chargers can look physically finished before electrical work, commissioning and network integration are complete. Tesla’s app and location tools provide drivers with Supercharger locations, maximum charging rates and real-time stall availability once a site is operating. Until the Hamilton replacement appears as available for use, drivers should plan charging around confirmed active locations rather than assuming construction progress means the station is open.

There is also an important unanswered detail: no sufficiently authoritative public completion date was identified during verification for this piece, so a specific reopening date should not be treated as confirmed. What is confirmed is the direction of travel. Hamilton is moving from a 20-stall, 150-kW-era Supercharger installation to a 16-stall V4 site at a property that has become one of Tesla’s most significant Canadian service locations. For local EV owners, the construction period may be inconvenient. Once the replacement is operating, however, Lime Ridge should have charging hardware better matched to the increasingly diverse vehicles using North America’s fast-charging network.
